Hi,

i found out that Canon EOS 5D Mark II can not record in 24p native is that true?

7d should be able if i have understand the docs..

Please help.

hi, thank you

i have not found this info on the docs. have you a link?

2) I found a lot of videos on youtube comparing 7d and 5dmk2 and 7d seems to be a better deal. What you think?

Mmm, I guess it´s a personal answer, but the 7D is better built (no cheap plastic feeling), better shielded against dust and water, feels better in your hand (more ergonomic), it has a decent AF metering system (the one in the 5D not only sucks, but it´s really really old and misses shots constantly), screen is a bit better in the 7D, it has dedicated video buttons, it shoots 13million frames per second (in comparison with the 3.9fps of the that turtle called 5DmkII), 7D has a bulit in flash,... and costs like half the price.

The 5D has a sensor twice as big, which for some things might be better.

To the OP, you probably won't find info about 24p in "the docs" (ie. the manual) 'cause the 5D originally only shot 30p (actual 30p). Canon released a firmware update about 2 months ago that enabled it to shoot 24p.

For certain situations, like photographing pretty drunk girls at the exit of a bar, having a built-in flash is handy.
Limit your lens options? What do you mean? THe lens casting shadows because it´s too big? That can happen sure. But anyway, having a bulit in flash does not harm.

Hey Miguel,
I havn´t seen much from you here lately, guess you are busy with actually shooting stuff, rather than talking about pixel count and such... ;o)
BUT, of course I´d like to hear your opinion about the whole HDSLR thing happening right now.
Do you use one? Maybe for smaller projects? Or is it RED or 35mm only...?

Macgregor I did not know that you had the 7D. Do you have any footage to show?
Would really love to see it.

The way I see it. For videographers, the 5D is a waste of money. Rather buy the 7D with a shoulder mount or an extra lens.
7D is made for video. The 5D is IMO a photography camera with a video option.

Trying to work out how anyone could conclude that the 7d or the 5d for that matter is made for video? Neither have many of the functions found in professional video equipment.

Relevant? Not when you can get a beautiful image that suits the needs of what you are shooting for.

As far as I could tell from Phillip Blooms Lucas ranch shoot, the 5d was sitting marginally at the top of the DSLR heap, considering the very static non moving format they did the testing. I just got a 5d, but I would have taken a 7d had one come up on the boards here with the lenses I was after - almost bought Barry Green's 7d but I missed it by that much. Will dump it as soon as someone comes out with a large sensor in a better format.

So you chose the 7D?

I thought I about it when I posted it.
Maybe I should've added: Made "more" for video..

The footage from the 5D is sweet indeed, but the 7D is from what I've seen equally sweet (or maybe even sweeter?). And the fact that it costs that much less should make it apparent to anyone that you get a lot more for the money.

(I'm speaking for videographers)

Edit:
Oh, and I've chosen it, and I'm selling my dvx100 & sgpro r3 setup now to buy the 7D.

I think he means you can shoot wide angle without having to practically buy a fish eye, a zoom or a lens that only opens up to f2.8 and therefore only gets sharp around f4.5.

From what I´ve seen so far the 5D just looks "deeper" and "richer", but considering all the different lenses, settings and lighting situations it´s hard to tell anyways...
I think after the still new firmware update the 5D will have a renaissance with filmmakers, right now a lot of shooters I know just went with the 7D because of 24p.
And the dedicated video button is nice, but the 5D still is convenient enough to put in video mode...
But as of right now I´m at the point of buying all the necessary (or not...) accessories including lenses and just add the 550D.
The moment sth like a markIII or a 1DsIV with full HDMI out appears, I´d swap bodys.
Only thing holding me back is the announcement of an upcoming new 24-70 f/2.8L with IS.

Gotcha. Actually the tokina 11-16 f2.8 is an amazing lens and i doubt you need anything wider than that. In order to get a similar quality lens in a full frame camera you need something like the nikor 14-24 which is not precisely very cheap. So actually i think you can get lighter and cheaper lenses on x1.6 cameras (arch that 24-70 almost killed my hand once).

I do own a 5D, or used to own a 5d because I gave it to my gf. I have shot however with the 7d succesfully, and on the extensive tests I did between the 5dvs 7d I clearly liked the 7d better ( but it was before the 5d update which apparently has increased the h264 data rate a tiny bit).

I am today thinking in getting a T2i in order to have a handy camera again.
I thnk that for small projects these cameras are great, specially regarding dynamic range and colours (something the red is really bad at). We all know aliasing is terrible, resolution very poor and compression... Well,, better not talk about compression (at this point is where you wish you were shooting with a red).

Any information about this?

What i like about HDSLRs is that in a tiny, Compact size you have a tiny film camera. The good thing is the size. I don't understand people that after buying the camera buy expensive matte boxes and hd monitors. Why do you need a matte box for? Use a screw in filter if you need Nds. still lenses rarely flare. The advantage of this camerAs is the size, and people throw that away. If you want to look pro buy yourself an ex1 at least. ;)

Hi Macgregor,

thank you for the matte box info. I was searching one for my new 7d or 550d :)

I will not buy one now!

Has screw in filtrer the same function as matte box?

Good to hear your direct comments and answers macgregor.

What would you say: 550d or 7d, pros and cons for you?
