Canon EOS 1D-X

I honestly don't think the nov 3rd press release has anything to do with cameras. If that were the case, I highly doubt this would have been released a week or two early. I would think they would have added this to the announcement to make it that much bigger. Wouldn't it be something if they announce a set of cinema lenses in the price point of zeiss compact primes. You never know with Canon, seems they always have something up their sleeves.

I had mention this also... but I think a camera is coming... or lets dream big... both...

I think Nov 3 will be a camera. The writing was on the wall when they announced that Hollywood center. I can't see them setting up shop in Hollywood to just service DSLRs and EF lenses. They specifically mention business opportunities with major clients like studios, production houses, television networks, rental facilities, and others. It's clear they're setting the groundwork for a major push into those markets and you don't do that with just PL lenses. It's got to be a camera! A historic announcement would be Canon's first digital cinema camera!

The exciting thing is the H.264 standard actually has profiles ranging from 8 bit 4:2:0 all the way up to 14 bit 4:4:4. Who knows what Canon picked, but we know Digic 5 is able to do intra so it's not impossible they are using a 10 bit 4:2:2 intra profile.

If the bitrate is really 355MB/s it's likely 422

the intro logo ... EOS MOVIE, I haven't seen this branding before, it looks like the video feature is no longer viewed as an 'add on' feature by canon

Canon is like most large companies, with many divisions. The pro video division, the consumer video division, the photography division, the copier division are all separate entities and business units. Just because one division does an announcement, doesn't mean it really has anything to do with the other divisions/business units.

The consensus is that the Nov 3rd announcement is from the pro-video division.

There's a nature video posted with macro shots. In one of them you have a closeup on an eye (butterfly or something), there's some real nasty moire going on in the eye. Other than that though I haven't seen any of the issues you guys mumble about, I think you forget that you're not viewing 2pass 1080p on vimeo here.

I wonder if the Anti Moire Filter just released for the 5d, will clean up the last bit aliasing and moire on the 1D-X?

I think you'd need one specific the sensor, the 5DII sensor is 21 mp the 1DX is 18. A different pixel pitch.

OT I wonder if the 3rd Nov announcement could be the merging of the photo and video divisions to make a single imaging division. That would be global.

Atleast that sample video on the Canon japanese site has gone through pretty bad scaling and has aliasing everywhere, more than my 7d makes :) I bet someone out there doesn't know how to scale video...

Soo...

Just saw the Dan Chung video covering this camera at the Canon Pro Solutions event in London. I think it helps answer a few of our questions.

Having seen the video, I've collected some thoughts on what this camera means for me, personally. There does seem to be a lot of improvements to the video side of the camera, some small, some big. If I miss something, chime in, please.

- No line skipping! Quite possibly the biggest news of it all, IF it truly does not skip and down samples in a gentle, elegant way.

- Improved rolling shutter. Actually seems to be very much improved based on the video. Also a big deal for me. Rolling shutter gives me problems even on ECU shots where the camera is locked off.

- Better low light. I'm kind of meh on this one, it was great already. I had no problems taking my 5D up to ISO 1600 or so. Combined with reasonably fast lenses, I haven't personally encountered a situation where I wished I could go higher yet.

- Longer record times. Not a big deal for my style of shooting, but this is a life saver for interviews. ...Boo to split files, though. That's another layer of processing and headaches in post for long takes on narrative shooting. Especially on the new codec. Here's to hoping they can implement EX-FAT before release.

- Presumably better dynamic range... larger pixels and next gen tech should net some kind of improvement. Just a guesstimate here, but all things being equal, if all they did was made the pixels larger, dynamic range SHOULD improve at least a little, but it seems they did quite a bit more than make pixels bigger.

- 1080 constant monitoring signal! This is a big deal for me. I hate the 5D's signal drop. The amount of time I've wasted on set waiting for the monitor to catch up to the signal change could've gotten me more good takes in a day.

- Time code. No Gen-lock, though. It's more important to me that Canon think it's a good idea to include it on a stills camera.

- Better audio controls (visible meters!). The A/D converter probably still isn't good enough for serious audio capture, but this is a real boon for event/doc people.

- Slightly better codec. Great! Jury's still out on what the bit rate actually is, though. Really conflicting info on this one, all from Canon reps. I've heard 4 times, 3 times, and 1.5 times over existing codec... If H.264 implementation is better, then that's good news as well... which actually brings me to the ONE nagging point about this camera:

8-bit 4:2:0.

Since no body's come out and trumpeted anything higher, we can probably assume the worst. It's the same.

It sucks, no question about it. It sucks BIG. I was REALLY hoping that it would at least do 4:2:2 like the XF305, but I guess that's just wishful thinking... The thing that really hurts is that we can't reasonably expect the next major upgrade to the tech until at least 3 years from now when the processor change again. Unless there's magic to be done in the firmware, which I doubt. It does give me a little bit of hope that they're putting in pro features like timecode and audio meters into the camera, though. Shows at least some recognition on Canon's behalf that there are people out there who use their DSLR for professional film work.

So it's a big suck. But is it a deal breaker? (for me)

It isn't.

I WANT to say that the 8-bit, 4:2:0 is a deal breaker, especially with the $6800 price tag... but it honestly isn't. It FEELS like it should be a deal breaker, but it isn't for me really. Not once I factor in the reality that it'll be about the only full frame camera that doesn't line skip (if indeed it doesn't) and still costs less than $10k... Even the venerable EX3 still costs $8320 today with no SXS cards. An F3 costs $13000 and still does only 8-bit 4:2:0 in camera. An FS-100 costs $5k, but doesn't have full frame sensor and also records to 8-bit 4:2:0 in camera. In fact, I'm not sure there's anything out there with a large sensor that records 10-bit 4:2:2 in camera short of an Alexa and technically RED. I'm not willing to entertain adding $2000 for a field recorder that I have to rig up and get power to. I have a complicated enough rig as it is. Between an FS100 + AJA mini, or a 1DX, I'd take the 1DX any day of the week (assuming significant improvements moire and rolling shutter.)

So damn, assuming all of the above are true, it looks like I'm saving up for this bad boy after all. Depending, of course, on what happens November 3rd. :)
