Looks very interesting for stills and movie shooters - low light will be interesting too. Just wish they would do full 1080 at 60p as that is the minimum standard now...but I guess they dont want to cannibalise on whats coming on Nov 3rd ;-)

Featuring advanced video-capture capabilities, the Canon EOS-1D X’s upgraded imaging system and Dual DIGIC 5+ deliver greatly enhanced movie quality. In particular, the camera minimizes the occurrence of color artifacts and moiré, and enables the shooting of low-noise video even in dark conditions.

USA press release is out. It's on all the regular sites...DPReview has an overview.

Interesting new developments regarding video:

- Codec is still H.264 but it can do intra frame or B frame compression
- Can do file spanning now so you can record up to 29 min, 59 sec
- Video has SMPTE timecode
- Audio levels can be adjusted up to 64 levels. There's auto and wind cut filter and mute.

No info on peaking or any other focus assist, AFAIK.

Low light performance might be insane!

canon fanboys rejoice! your dream cam is here!

costing just a few thousand more than an AF100 or FS100!
Now you can justify your EF Lens collection by putting it on a really expensive body!

7000 = too much for DSLR video. Photography? Sure, and you're getting the best. But video? Might as well buy the Af100 or the Sony.

Um.... No. 355 MB/s with the i frame mode?nsane low light? Could be a beast, like no other in fact. Can't wait til videos start leaking out.

I'm curious to see this new intraframe codec. If its 4:2:2 10bit, well, its a heck of an improvement vs the Af and the FS...

Cosimo, where did you get those numbers? If it is that much, the image should be absolutely stunning...

Re: bit rates, I found this quote on DPReview, the subject being interviewed is Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor in Canon USA's Pro Engineering and Solutions Division

"Westfall believes the 1D X has the features that pro shooters will want: 'I think people are looking for a balance between cost and performance - the cameras offering 60P at the kind of bit rates that we can offer tend to be in a higher price bracket. And we can offer 720p at 60 frames per second,' he says.

'People we're dealing with are tending towards using 24 - to match the filmic look. There are cameras offering 60P in the consumer market but they have got the bit rate we're offereing. Many of them are limited to less than 30mbps while we're bumping up against 50. "

Seems like they're still in the 50MB/s range

Bill, thanks for the info. Cannot load DP Review for whatever reason... I'm curious to see if they went 4:2:2, 10Bit, or AVC-Intra 50, which is 4:2:0 10bit, or their own proprietary implementation of Intra, which can be, well, anything.

Also interesting will be to know if the HDMI out is "clean" or with the display burned in like in the EOS's...

My guess is that it's 45.5 megabits.

Ah man, this bytes vs bits thing really sucks. It's supposed to be:

b = bit
B = byte

Yes - DPreview says "Many of them are limited to less than 30mbps while we're bumping up against 50."

That suggests they're talking about megabits.

But earlier they also say "The 1D X offers two compression options, including 'All-I,' a very low compression format that offers high image quality and editability but at the cost of immense files (a 16Gb card will hold around 6 minutes of footage)"

Now.. is that a GB card or a Gb (gigabit) card? Looks like Gb but all the cards I know are marked in gigabytes, not gigabits.

If GB then 16GB / 6 min / 60 sec = 45.5 MB/sec = 364 megabit/sec
If Gb then it's 45.5 Mb/sec.

Then they say that "The alternative is a more standard IPB compression that takes up around 1/12th of the space"

So does that mean they either offer:
364 megabit/sec new recording mode and 30 megabit/sec standard H264 recording...
or:
45.5 megabit/sec new recording mode and only 3.79 megabit/sec standard H264 recording (seems a bit low - but then they could fit 30mins on a card easily - maybe this has marketing appeal?)

Ah man. Where's a good old table of specs when you need it? Or interviewers who can distinguish between bits and bytes... problem is it was a verbal interview and it's difficult to convey capitalization verbally :) Here's the original article:

Isn't the "Scarlet" supposed to be around this price range?

I'm sorry but this price is just way to expensive and if I were spending that kind of money I would just look at other options.... Any DSLR over 3k is to expensive imo.

Reading that quote it seems like they are talking 50MB (6 minutes in 16GB card???)

This is absolutely insane, and the quality out of it should be stunning if that's the case... I find it funny they don't elaborate on that. I'm sure it is to protect the November 3rd announcement. I speculate (without any basis but this press release) that the November 3rd cameras will have this codec with faster frame rates...

avc-intra-50 is 50Mbps with 1080p 10 bits 4:2:0 - avc-intra-100 is 100Mbps with 1080p 10bits 4:2:2 - From what they've said , it looks like Canon is going 364Mbps, which would be totally insane - let's wait and see (in any case, you can't buy the camera before march, so there's no other option)
