Very much appreciated Phil as always. As much as I'd like to see a GH3 review, I know you never go half way and would have to spend days if not weeks to do it on your level. That said, it would be cool if you could share your thoughts on the camera without any actual "review" footage etc.

Have you thought about selling the 1DX while it's still worth a lot to jump over to the 1DC?

Already traded it in for the 1dc. That's the one I have with me now. It was easier in my head to do. 1dx is great but more for me than my paid work. 1DC I can use for both. S35 canon log matches my c300 and 4k lovely to have too!

Gh3 hasn't got a review coming. Not like this. But it's part of a big comparison video I shot last month. Editing that next.

Always try my best. Friggin time consuming though! Full time job doing those things amount of cameras out there hence only do about 3 a year! Blackmagic one was 9 days pf
work! Ouch!

I would just really luvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv to see a bad review of something! I've got the itch. Maybe if that D16 ever comes to life...

Wow. Great review as ever. The 1080/50p was really disappointing! Shame on you Canon!

So, out of interest, are you editing this in Premiere Pro as 4K ProRes or as proxy files?

thanks...i am actually still trying to figure out the best workflow...currently converting to 2k ProRes 422 to be manageable and if need 4k i can relink...

Hi Dennis

I think I misunderstood you, I thought you meant my reviews were never bad because I put so much effort into them but you actually want to see something trashed?

Why would you want to see a bad review? Personally, I simply wouldn't waste my time doing it Dennis. Why should I spend upwards of 4 days investing my time into something that is just a waste of time? I do these for zero financial gain so I have to be choosy about what I spend my time focusing on.

If you do watch my reviews...all of them, they show the good and the bad in all their glory, but I only ever do reviews of cameras that really interest me, even then I still cannot even come close to getting them all done. I do around 3 a year. That's it. Simply no time. I have to spend most of my time actually earning money! :)

The closest I got to to saying something was not good was my full frame shootout last spring where I said Nikon D4 was terrible and that was possible because it was a comparison video...same if you watch my new comparison that I am currently editing, between 6D, GH3, C100 and EOS-M. That will be done within a fortnight...trying to have a few days off before I crack on with that.

So far PB, my major complaint with my 1DC is with the 60p FF footage. As you said, it's just not up to scratch for a $12K USD camera, in my mind.

I'm not sure I understand the point of a 4K, 8-bit camera that doesn't shoot RAW and doesn't have the outputs for external 4K RAW, higher bit depth recording. Of course, I don't find the C500 or Canon RAW with baked in ISO and WB at 950Gb per hour too compelling either. But I do find the images that the 1DC and C500 produce to be lovely, just not an answer to a question that my clients are asking for.

I think it's trying to be everything but cant. They always have to leave features out as to not compete with their own products. I dont like it but I think thats why.

I'm not sure I entirely agree, Erik. I think it's trying to be (first) a 4K 24p video camera in a DSLR body, and (second) a compelling stills camera, and it succeeds at both. It's some of the other underperforming (so far) features that make me scratch my head a bit.

Great review Philip! Looks like a nice camera and I can see it's use for many applications. 4k in very remote crap weather locations where all you need is a bag of batteries and your lenses and LOT'S of CF cards.

Going back to the remark of "When has he ever given a bad review". Why would he? If it were a bad camera he could just tweet, "Don't bother with this camera". Most time I read or watch reviews is to see the positive of the tool. If you watch Philips reviews, he always throws the cons in or what he's like to see the camera do better. Plus he makes it entertaining, much like watching something on the tele.

I'm not interested in the camera just due to it's price. But I can see where people can get great use of the 1Dc if they have the budget and want to take the strengths of the camera into account.

For me, I was lucky to find a BMCC. I'll go 4k whatever when the Canon 5dMk5 comes out. I also picked up the Gh3 and I feel it's my go to camera for fast working environment or low budget assignment, along with the BMC for any special shots were RAW will save the day. Both the cameras together and with the 12-35 and 35-100 cost less than $8000. Plus, when I shoot Prores on the BMC, the Gh3 hangs right there with it and I have similar sensors. I've also played with upresing the BMC to 4k and it holds up VERY nicely.

I'm not all that concerned with 4k yet. Until the majority of my clients can view 4k, 1080p it is and it will be here for a long time. But if I'm asked for 4k, the tests I've ran out of the BMCC will hold up just fine for now.

Thanks Philip and keep up the good info. And keep your bad reviews to yourself or just tweet them....
