that will be honest approach and sony took that route ...
but what canon did is more of the exploitation ...
users praised and worship 5d mark II and make canon household name in video production ...
before u didnt hear canon funboy term in video world ....
so they use that free marketing (better than any money could give them ) to overpriced their products...
this is insulting for all loyal canon customers ...

I think the 5D3 shoots very decent video and it's definitely under $15K
but it's true that they have to keep up with the competition, and 420 H.264 at 33 Mbps in a $3500 camera is not something to brag about in 2012
the D800 is selling like hot cakes (mainly to photogs, I'd guess, but the DR in video makes it attractive to video shooters as well), the 5D3 is being a flop, quickly falling from the top-10 amazon list (right now: D800, D3100, D5100, T3, T2i, D7000, T3i, T3i, 5D3, D5100)

the 1DX has been delayed and may not be in photogs hands for the Olympics, the 1DC doesn't have the features to match its price tag, the C500 has the specs of the Scarlet at twice the price...

The reason why the 5D3 is falling on that list is because it is not available. If you look more carefully you will notice that placing an order at the regular price on Amazon now means waiting 1-2 months. Who wants to do that?
It could be argued that it is instead wildly popular because it is sold out virtually everywhere.
The D800 is undoubtedly better for stills, but not for video currently. We will see when the anti-moire filter comes out if that changes. Clean HDMI being the name of the game.
The 1DX can push 14 18mp fine JPEGs a second for 16,000 frames (Rounding).
Pushing 24 9mp MJPEGs should be no sweat at all.
So the basic hardware can cope, all I see is a firmware upgrade. A small-moderate charge would be fair, but not double.

The XF100/105 & XF300/305 also shoot very good video for well under $15K. The XA10 shoots very good video & that's under $2K.

C'mon $8000 for a headphone jack sounds reasonable.
It's more funny that the Canon haters who absolutely hated the aliasing are now falling in love with the D800. What the hell man?

i dont care for the logo on my camera , and i own 5d2 and gh2 ...
but i use only zeiss and leica r lens because i dont like to be on mercy of one brand ...
i only care for the image quality and i refuse to do free marketing for big corporation ...
this ridiculous prices are consequence of making canon dslr in to religious artifacts ...
look a the SONY ... customers refuse to play their game and they start to lose money ...
now they desperate and try harder they can to put camera with good spec for less money ...
this is business ....
