Canon Confirms 24p And 25P For 5D via firmware update!!!

And this is exactly the reason I try to point this stuff out to folks. Whenever a new camera technology comes along that makes a camera less capable of shooting in all environments (whether rolling shutter, or long-GoP, or now highly-aliased sensors) someone's gonna get themselves in a situation where they're screwed. Unfortunately for yoclay, he was one.

So I don't really care how many people don't like me saying it, the truth of the matter is that these DSLR's aliasing is a potentially dangerous fault. If you need a camera you can rely on at all times, to always deliver the shot, the DSLR is not it. And the more people chant its glories and say "bah, who shoots res charts", the more folks like yoclay are gonna end up screwed sooner or later.

Learn what it does, learn how it behaves, and learn when it misbehaves. That's the only way you can keep yourself out of this type of situation.

5D firmware

5D firmware

Canon has not yet released a proper full-frame or s35-frame camcorder. I am confident that Canon will do it right after it solves the issues found in existing VDSLRs.

1- I don´t understand why people don´t get to know the things before they talk... A APS sensor is about the same size as a S35 mm cine sensor (not 5D ff which is bigger than vistavision)
2- Why do you want the 24 fps for? Does anyone has the perception of the difference between 24 to 25 fps??? I am sorry but in your brain it is not possible to perceive the difference. Did you know that 24 fps appeared because in the beginning of motion pictures the frame rate was much higher and they lowered it? Why ?? Because mechanically the equipment and the actual film couldn´t resist the strain of the speedy frame rate. Besides how many of the 5D users will transfer their work to film?
3- The 25 fps frame rate is only useful to PAL countries nothing else...
4- Issues like aliasing and moire and rolling shutter are much more important that the frame rate. What do you people want? To pay $2000 and have a ARRI digital like camera? Who pays the R&D and the marketing for the big companies??? Do you think that a ARRI costs $50000 of parts and labour??? AHAHAHHAHAH... Try to make them in China and you´ll see how much you would pay for it. That was what RED did and what happened? Panasonic and Canon released what the called prosumer cameras that actually have almost the same quality as the RED. Professional guys all over the world are turning to small cameras and dropping the big complicated RED. It had its time but now either they release a cheap cam or they are finished... That´s the price people pay to make technology available to everyone. I paid 10 years ago $12000 for a PVV-5 Betacam SP dockable recorder...Do you know how much money was 12000 ten years ago?
5- So people I read a phrase that said... "Do you know what is the difference between painters and cinematographers? Is that painters when they get together they don´t often spend time talking about their brushes":violin::violin:

The issue here is that we are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. The 5dmkII is not really built for video. Canon apparently noticed how popular it became and is taking steps, but BELIEVE ME, they are selling a Still camera First ( and as far as a still camera goes its TOP NOTCH) and the video is a new feature. They needed to keep the price point where the 5D lives. under 3K. WHILE delivering 21.1 MP still images and a Digic 4 processor.

Sure they could build a big fat 35mm size chip Camera with industry quality Audio, Minimal overheating issues, Long lasting batteries, no aliasing, a nice high Bitrate, and various Lens mounts that services everyhting from Canon to Nikon to PL.... and records to CF cards....

that sounds awesome and it is, and i can buy that RIGHT now. for 17,500 from RED. The point is that for 2600$, youre getting a wishy washy Video camera and a SPECTACULAR DSLR.

Its like, having a Ferrari, but expecting its powerful engine ot be useful for towing a huge trailer. Yes its powerful, but and theoretically is should be able to do it cause of the power.... but thats Really not what its designed for..... Waht you need is a SUV for that.... and you can buy one... for 17500..... ;)

Excelent analogy and reply. If this was an XL-H2 or an XH-A1, one could complain about its issues. This camera, as well as the others, are still cameras first, video cameras after. However, I say this again: a big Thailand blockbuster- top of Thailand's Box Office- was shot entirely on a 5D Mark II. It looks simply stunning. It was shot in a "formal" way- no Dogma like look like we see in District 9, for example, but typical Hollywood style camera work and lighting like Benjamin Button, Wanted. It looked, well, to my eye in a 2k projection and on a professional Panny LCD monitor, up to par to F23 footage. Was the talent on the film wearing any pattern clothes? I don't recall. But I didn't notice aliasing, or heavy compression, or anything like this. This friday I'll be able to check the name of the movie and I'll post it here for you guys to check in IMDB.

someone asked about overheating....

i just used the 5Dmkii on a music video. camera was on for hours at a time with live view activated.

essentially, the camera does overheat. what seems to happen is it becomes less sensive, noisier, and loses a bit of color. essentially retaining consistency becomes difficult.

we let the camera cool down for 10min every hour or so. that seemed to do the trick.

5- So people I read a phrase that said... "Do you know what is the difference between painters and cinematographers? Is that painters when they get together they don´t often spend time talking about their brushes":violin::violin:

Gotta love it. So true!

I didnt commented on this but this is unbielievable news, its a proof that they listen and forums, complaints ,calls and surveys worked.Guys should be happy cause its goin to happen,in 2010 but so what,it will happen,it came true.Anybody heard about something similar in history ever ? I didnt.Canon thank You.
All frame rates available up to 30 would be super awesome and its possible but its great that you dont have to stick with ugly 30p on 5D II and 24 +25 update is very nice surprise.

actually painters do talk about brushes.... Sable Mink, great for everything. Watercolor to Oil.

Dont forget 29.97 for us NTSC users!

This is IMO, precisely the point. Nowhere in there does it say that the 30p will go from 30.00 to 29.97, which is the one thing that keeps me from buying a 5D... and frankly I'd like to buy a 5D today. As much as I like the addition of 24p, making the 30p a true 29.97 would be more important (for me) than the 24p... and I do shoot in 24p...

I'm sure the video division at Canon has not lost sight of the fact that the 5DmkII is eating their lunch right now. If I had a nickel for everyone who has said "I want that sensor in a real video camera with XLRs, lenses designed to focus during recording, etc." I could retire.

Perhaps the Canon video division will decide not to just close up shop and stuff the 5D sensor in an H1 body instead?

Yeeees 25p plz!! I would definately get a 5d if it had that. I don't even mind if the jello was the same as the d90.

Emailed Canon this morning about the ETA of the new 24p firmware (also requested better manual external audio input/control, and a more stable picture for non-jelly images off the CMOS sensor. Better anti-aliasing and no moire patterns). Just got this reply.

Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

Unfortunately, we do not have a launch date for the EOS 5D Mark II firmware update that will allow 24 fps. I am very sorry for any inconvenience.

I will be more than happy to add your additional requests to our Customer Voice program.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your EOS 5D Mark II.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

interesting...from a business perspective, perhaps releasing the 24p firmware update for the 5D M2 will occur after introduction of some new similarly capable Canon video product offered in another marketing channel.

Hello guys. I have come across a few updates on the firmware situation here...

Apparently no 720p and no February release as rumoured by the San Fransisco SuperMeet people who as you may or may not remember were giving a 5D 'with 2010 firmware update' away as a prize. Canon USA are a sponsor and they have now been given a dressing down and told to change their description of the prize, with now states that the firmware update is coming separately at a later date.

that bit was by our old friend "CommanderSpike" so... I wouldn't put any more validity in that then the other peoples opinions we have seen for months now on various forums. Maybe 720p won't happen, but so far not one person has posted anything that I could see standing as actual proof either way.

don forget there is no Magic lantern for 7D yet. thats important for alot of reasons.

Nowhere has Canon ever said that it would include 720p. Nor, as far as I know, have they ever said it specifically WON'T include 720p either -- they have never mentioned 720p one way or the other. Nor did they ever say the firmware update would be out in January (which, of course, is now history).

The simple fact of the matter is that there is no official news beyond what was listed in that original press release. And that press release says 24p/25p will be added to the 1080p mode, sometime in the first half of 2010. So they have another five months in which they could release it.

Well this sucks balls.

And there is a video of a canon rep saying that the 5d will be getting all of the frame rates of the 7d.

This sucks.
