Canon C300 has landed in Canada

Flash test and a Rolling Shutter test, and both passed with what looks like flyin' colors.

... Want. =[

Nigel,

The cake was shot in log. Is it possible to see a screen pic of the log capture before you colored. Thanks

Since youre one of the only people on earth with a C300, AND an F3, please do a comparison shot, but something metered to 14 stops range, so we can see what the C300 can do compared to what pushes the limits of the F3.

With great power comes great responsibility.

The shot is pretty, but without a comparison to what we know, we cant determine if there is a marked improvement. im about 99.99% certain your F3 w/ log can pull the EXACT same IQ.

It seems to me the F3 has less noise if I look at the cake clip at native ISO. But I think both flashing, albeit in such a small part of the frame is not conclusive, and rolling shutter is good.

That is the log footage, ungraded. It seems that Canon's log footage is not as flat as the F3 's slog. That's what I've seen. They have more colour in it but it seems very natural.

I had to give the camera back. It was a crazy weekend shooting the commercial and ran out of time to do any formal test I do think they are around the same. When I was at the launch in LA they had one of those backlit DR charts ( the name escapes me). Another DP and I looked at it in canon log and saw around that 13 and change stops.

When I was shooting on the weekend I just matched ISO's because I didn't have any time to test both cameras and I didn't have to change anything in my exposure.

Sorry to hear the cam must go back so soon but I sure am appreciative for the wealth of knowledge you have generously provided so far. Bravo Nigel !

I think the C300 and F3 will be comparable in image quality with log on both. You really can't go wrong with either one for 95% of the situations. There might be a possiblity the C300 will have an edge in aliasing/moire and lower noise at extremely high ISOs due to the different sensor design. But the edge might be just very slight.

So the C300 isn't really out to kill the F3, it's just a different tool that offers different things. For example, there's a native EOS mount, it has onboard 4:2:2 codec, it uses CF cards, it uses less power, and the form factor is different. On the other hand, the F3 has options for 10 bits 4:4:4 out with 1080/60p. You really have to get your hands on both, operate them, see how you like them, then prioritize your needs.

Again Nigel, thanks for taking the time to share your experiences and video from your weekend. The fact you found time to contribute here is very much appreciated.

Thanks guys. I always appreciate hearing your experiences, and glad I can contribute. I agree with Piolet. I think there is an edge with moire, aliasing, and rolling shutter on the C 300. I am interested in it because it is a different tool for different jobs, helping add to my F3. For those with EF glass its an easy migration to it from the 5D. Price is one thing, but in the broadcast world, its reasonable considering how much punch is packed into this small camera. My Canon broadcast lenses cost more.

Nigel: Thank you very much for posting these images. I am truly impressed. I'm trying to decide between F3 and C300 -- problem is that the Sony $800 rebate ends this month, before I'll be able to try out the C300. So, I'm hoping you can help me out on a question I've been wondering about:
With the handle and LCD attached, the C300 is a touch heavier than the F3 alone and seems, from the picture, to be top-heavy. How did it feel to you in action? Have you ever used the F3 handheld?

Thanks.
