EOS C300 Dual Pixel CMOS AF Feature Upgrade

Originally introduced in the Canon EOS 70D Digital SLR camera, Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology is designed to provide continuous autofocus when shooting in single operator, or run-and-gun set-ups like documentaries, weddings, events, or electronic news gathering (ENG). When used in combination with an STM lens, this technology allows for the capture of high quality video without the interruption of noise by the focusing motor.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF is an innovative image-plane phase-detection AF technology that employs a CMOS sensor on which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously. Although camera operators can still focus manually, this new optional feature upgrade can enable smooth continuous AF with phase detection, a particularly useful feature when shooting with a small crew or single-operator run-and-gun filming and cinéma vérité style shoots.

The optional Dual Pixel CMOS AF feature upgrade for the EOS C300 Cinema camera supports continuous AF with all compatible Canon EF series lenses when shooting subjects positioned in the center of the imaging area. The technology involves complementary use of a contrast signal to achieve advanced autofocus stability that helps reduce the occurrence of loss of focus on a subject. Also included is an AF Lock which allows users to lock a focus point once AF is achieved and recompose the shot. Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF also nearly doubles the speed of the EOS C300 Cinema camera’s One-Shot AF function, which enables a DP to focus on a subject located at the center of the screen with the push of a button, a feature that is currently supported on 104 Canon EF lens modelsi.

The Dual Pixel CMOS AF feature upgrade for the EOS C300 Cinema camera will be made available to users through an authorized Canon service center. For more information please visit the Canon U.S.A. website at http://pro.usa.canon.com/EOSC300FeatureUpgrade.

WOW! What else is hidden under the hoods of these cameras??? Come on Canon, just release the full potential of these machines!

They will, at a snail's pace, and for a price, while other companies continue to roll out innovative new cameras, some a couple a year; often for far less money.
Canon lost our business because of this nonsense.

I'll take the $500 dollar AF upgrade, no problemo. Canon does take some time to roll out these up grades and I am hoping, but probably going to be disappointed, when the VFR 1080 up to 60P upgrade never emerges. In the mean time, the C 300 continues to be the best camera I have had in years, and a great investment.

OTOH the innovative BM pocket cam is a huge yawn.

Fabulous, great news! I'll go for the autofocus upgrade once it is vetted by the community. Canon's reputation is in releasing reliable products. We shouldn't confuse these with vapor ware that shows up with significant price increases and/ or defects long after announcement. Pros usually don't go for alpha releases, that is unless they are looking for early retirement!

If possible, and only if cooling is not an issue, I'd be interested in seeing what can be gained by a dual Digic 5 processor upgrade. Very happy with Canon right now.

Thank You Canon!

As soon as the dual pixel AF upgrade for C100 was announced, I had requested Canon to give us the feature for C300 as well. I was promised that the request would be relayed to the Canon Gods in Japan. Happy that the Gods have listened. :)

We are getting into an era where Canon, Sony etc are going to support their present cameras as platforms and progressively give us features.

Canon may have rushed the camera to market with the Digic 3 processors hence all the unnecessary flack about 8 bit. I am all for mfg's extending the life of their cameras through upgrades. Extends the life of the camera for us and allows mfg's to make their investment back. Win/ win.

What an absolute joke! You spend $14K on this camera and now they want a further $500 from you for a function that SHOULD have been STANDARD!!!! :kali:

Which companies offer this feature as standard? Name the cameras please.

Will I be happy if Canon gives this upgrade which involves hardware upgrade as free? Absolutely!

However, one should remember that there is a development cost. If customers demand things for free, then companies will not do the development or worse will not upgrade the current cameras. They will then release these features only in new cameras. Here this company is giving new features so that customers don't need to buy a new camera for a certain feature.

If you are a C300 owner, then you have a choice of not opting for this upgrade.

As a former owner of Sony FS100 I'm really happy to see this. I've been waiting for a software firmware update for that camera for 1.5 years and it never happened. While Canon is not only updating their software on a regular basis, they offer hardware updates like this to add new features to their existing cameras. I think the next big step would be internal 4k, because both C100 and C300 are capable of doing it.

How many professional (video) cameras have autofocus? And if you're shooting with cine lenses, the point is moot anyway.

I got my 300 upgraded this past week and I love it . I don't rely on the af a lot but it's great to have in your back pocket . I was shooting on Wall Street last Wednesday picking people out of crowds long lens and following the. The continuous auto focus is better than I am much of the time . That said I wish there was a button '7a' on the hand grip that could be assigned as either push auto focus or auto focus lock ....

there is no hardware upgrade as far as i know - its just a sensor calibration done at some kind of very expansive technique....

i like the idea of new features, - its great to get something new with out the needs of getting a new cam

wish they would do a true hardware upgrade for:

- 60p live
- for slow motion
- 10 bit internal or external over hdmi maybe
- or even upgrade for cfast cards , so that we could do all kind of things internal

i just watched that clips - https://vimeo.com/97891193 - the guy talking about AF upgrade..... , but he does mention again - its a hardware upgrade..... i wonder if any one has a 1st hand info about? its been told by canon that it is just sensor calibration.... and a filmware
