Canon 7D vs HPX500

So.... looks like they're both WB'd correctly in both comparisons.. but it seems like the hpx has a slight slight yellow hue to it.

Interesting

I just wish that girl didn't look SO INSANELY SAD

:bath:

She likes Wtf ?

You want me to hold what board to shoot video wit a fotoKamera !

Im getting cramps now .....you owe me .

I own you !

shut it off

take a a picture already !

Yeah the results are mind boggling . And I believe its a more greenish tone on the hpx 500 then yellow it's part of the mojo !

The music is killing me !

So am I the only one turned on by this video...?

Ok not really, they should use this to torture terror suspects... OMG that was mind numbingly painful to watch.
The music definitly the worst part... or maybe the HPX footage :)

I'm gonna go find my happy place now...

EDIT: This makes it official, anything smaller than 4/3rd" sensor is dead to me now!

I offer you my condolences be strong .

Your not the only one ...... 2 years ago I dreamed of the hpx500

Now I just think about glass

This video makes you feel like you just won 20 Grand in USD that is

It's hard to say, but I'm guessing there is some kind of fluorescent or something hitting that wall in the background...no other reason for it to be green'd out like it is.

I use an HPX daily for my FT job...my footage has never looked as flat as what they shot in this test. However, now as a new 7D owner, I'm feeling the love for a single big chip with pretty glass...

That must've taken hours to shoot.

My take? Both cameras are capable in competent hands. The 7D has superior DOF and a less noise in lower light it seems. I didn't notice aliasing with the 500 like I did in her hair with the 7D with strong backlight.

Impressive nonetheless. However, I can't get over we're comparing 2 1080p capable cameras with 720p mpeg4 compressed videos.

How can DOF be superior?.... It's an anomaly of components... or a crutch for most people...

I think that myself, and many others, got the 7D because of that reason. Depth of field control. Being able to take it shallow is a big deal. Explain, if you would, how it is a crutch when so many (if not most or all) major films utilize it quite heavily.

Isn't isolating a character in a scene and bringing the focus onto them and off of the background a good thing for many situations?

Thanks for the comparsion Ian!

I love the 7D look! and with Nikon glass the result is superb, but the 500 still keeping this amazing filmic like processor, and for sure is one of the very best news-documentary camera.

Ian, what adaptor you use to fit Nikoor?? very very sharp!

Sorry vico, that's not my video. I just came across it yesterday and was impressed with what I saw. I think those folks are attempting to match both cams up for future productions...and I think based on the results we see it can easily be done. The 500 is no doubt a pro machine. It has all the bells and whistles on-board for that type of use. When the firmware hack is ready and available for the 7D then I think it will also turn this camera into a pro featured machine.

I just picked up the 7D last week and am now playing with the Custom Picture profiles. It's amazing what you can do with these profiles. I think some of these other profiles folks made (like Superflat, Marvel etc.) are kind of extreme for me...but can be used. It's easy to go overboard ...but when you get it just right you can make some nice custom pictures "without" any added noise.

That HPX500 footy looks as though it is slightly off on WB to me. Anyone in CLT want to side-by-side a 5dII or 7d against an HPX300? Better price comparison, DOF won't match though.

I dont own a hpx 500 but on the hmc 150 ,the 5600K WB preset does have a greenish tone in Cine D.
I believe they did the test with 5600K WB preset for both cameras.

So, I own both an hpx500 and a 7d and have successfully matched them for a 2 cam shoot. most of that was CC, but it ended up fine.

Saying you're shocked by the results seems a little bit extreme to me. I'm with Kholi on this one... DOF is a crutch for most people. The compression alone on DSLRs makes them unattractive when compared to a proper ENG camera. So it's slightly greenish in white balance... what does that actually tell you that helps you compare it to the 5D/7D?

It allows you to be lazy with lighting, art/set design, and location. And to a certain extent blocking and shot selection. Basic things every filmmaker should know but many are not learning because they strap that f/1.4 nifty-fifty on there and make everything except the actor's nose (because they missed focus on the eyes) look like one amorphous blob.

Extreme how?

I said nothing about DOF. Kholi brought that up. As a matter of fact I was not comparing DOF when I made that statement. But so what if DOF is a crutch for folks? That has nothing to do with this test.

what does that actually tell you that helps you compare it to the 5D/7D?
The similarities in image quality. You may be able to fine tooth pick them for artifacts but NOT the average person. And yes...the greenish hue is a big deal. Fix it in post...sure...but what I see on this test makes me pause.

I dont get why it always have to be "everything in focus VS f1.4 eyebrows only in focus" arguing. Its not like that , DOF is important but of course lets not be so extreme ,IMO actors face in every shot should be in focus (nose ,eyes, ears) and if its too shallow its distracting.Kholi personal taste is to have wide FOV and its ok ,but telling that DOF is not important makes me doubt about existance of every DSLR category on this forum, why we even discussing 7D or RED if shallow dof is not important, its much easier and cheaper to get super wide angle on small sensors.Everything in focus is distracting ,it doesnt look natural ,human eye doesnt see things this way and shallow DOF its more natural for human eye because we see things like that when were talking with someone ,were using selective focus every day with our own eyes.
There is also one factor - shallow DOF looks more like film, when you will shoot something with 7D with deep focus then its very hard to make it look like film, when shooting on film you dont have this problem at all because its film, movement tells this after like 2 seconds.7D still can look like regular video on wide angle lens, i personally hate this and even if its 24p with proper shutter 1/45 or 1/50 then it doesnt look exactly like film ,blur in movement is not the same.It just doesnt.
