canon 7d vs. 60d

The flip out screen and manual audio levels have pushed the 60d into a whole other level. why would you not just shoot with a loupe/viewfinder? and the screen articulating joint handles it no problem. and they just pop off anyway if you bump into something.

in many cases, that's a very reasonable solution.

but i have found that people who shoot with DSLRs are often positioning the camera in ways that it wouldnt be convenient (or sometimes even possible) to put your eye near the camera

Ok tell me this: before and after u press record..does the 60d give you u HD output via HDMI and how does it look?
And finally..another big attraction to me is the adjustable audio level. I use a shotgun, boom pole and asden portable mixer. Output that to the 60d should be pretty good right? Is quality good enough for film work recording voice? The t2i was terrible for that due to audio gain control.

Wait a few months as I will, all this first generation Canon DSLR were an experiment sponsored by our wallets, the serious staff is about to arrive.

Yes I believe it only downrezzes to 480p when recording.

if you mean before you start recording. then again after you stop recording.
yes, the HD output via HDMI is quite workable.

if im recording mission-critical audio on a DSLR shoot, i will always use a dedicated external recorder

Actually, using Magic Lantern on a T2i gives great audio performance because you can completely disable the weak camera pre-amps. The 60D and T3i both allow you to manually turn off AGC, which is a major part of the audio problem, but getting around AGC is only part of it. The camera suffered from two problems, AGC and weak amps. Turning off AGC will only get you so far, sending in a hot signal and setting the analog gain to zero can get you the rest of the way.
Sadly, you can't turn off the camera gain completely on the 60D or T3i in stock firmware, and if I am not mistaken Magic Lantern only offers this feature on the T2i.

The irony is that the T2i is the *best* of these cameras for recording audio currently.

Meanwhile, most (if not all) of the questions and concerns in this thread are already addressed in the sticky posts of the appropriate DSLR section (Canon APS-C).
I'm moving this thread there and recommend the OP read the stickies before posting next time. Thank you.

Mordy: audio is identical in T2i and 60D with Magic Lantern in all aspects. Only T3i has some problems right now.

maybe it's been said, but why in tarnashon aren't you looking at the gh2. it destroys the 7d and the 60d, I know I have a Canon and a gh2, and the canon sits in it's case most of the time because like I said before, the gh2 eats it for lunch.

Gods honest truth, after using the gh2, then looking through a Canon, I feel as though I cant seem to get into focus. But it's not that I cant focus it, it's the gh2 is so sharp, that after using it, it literally makes the canons look out of focus, even with sharp glasss. Thats the difference in resolution. it's night and day. Now thats not to say I dislike Canon, I love the look canon produces for certain types of shooting, like faces, stuff like that, where to sharp becomes unflattering.

But where your concerns are, I think a gh2 would be right up your alley.

Yeah i've had the same overheating issue with the T2i especially at 1280x720 60p. A class 10 card seems to help. i came from the film world with 11 minute mags so getting 27.5 minutes of 2.5X overcranked slowmo after recording 11mins feels great!! 27.5 mins would be 2475 ft @ say .70 cents a foot for stock & processing... $1,732.50 + another $500 an hour for HD telecine for two hours = $2,732. I LOVE FILM! and i also need to remember to count our lucky indie filmmaker stars for these DSLRs. 5d, 7d, or T2i + REAL film scans from CineGrain and you're set for less than the cost of a 30 min film shoot! Lucky us!!

I think actual Canon DSLR are not half as good as GH2, First of all Canon has Moire and aliasing I still don't understand why, we accepted such
a problem, maybe because was the camera in fashion, and the influence from the paid heroes Bloom, Laforet and others.
Any way at this point when most of the Planet owns Canon lenses we are all waiting for Canon to come out with something at least as decent as
the Panasonic GH2, but I'm also sure that if Canon remains with the trashy look most of users are decided to switch brand.
One great thing about Canon is the still image, and comments say GH2 is not too good for stills, I can not confirm that since I haven't use
a GH2 , but the footage is glorious

What a ridiculous thing to say - We use Canon because it is STILL the only camera with a full frame sensor and costs a fraction of any of the cameras at that time (and still today).

You mean the only frame full of Moire and aliasing ?
However I'm sure Canon will solve the problem soon
keep the lenses donate the trash

You can't really speak about these things until you've tried both...oh yeah and also actually worked as a DP. Homemade movies don't count.

its this kind of short-sighted, blinder-logic that just baffles me on the whole DSLR thing.

"full frame sensor" yadda, yadda, yadda... just a buncha horsecrap. if your CMOS sensor/rolling shutter turns light poles into licorice when the camera is moved...
you DSLR jockies just befuddle the hell out of me.

from where i stand. a video camera that cant endure camera movement is called a STILL camera.

Try this with a Canon and name it the electric brick with a dizzy carpet by bronxjragon, free tickets please watch it

I use both 60D and GH13/7 for corporate work. Much as I prefer the form factor and build of my 60D, I can't trust it for anything except shallow dof and low light work due to well-documented aliasing and moiree problems. I think the GH2 might well be the tool for you if you're only shooting video, and I believe it has hi-res hdmi output too. Whatever dslr you choose, you should budget for a seperate audio recorder (I use my old canon hv30 camcorder, which records great audio via a beachtek adapter).
