Canon 7D Press Release

More than anything, reading the specs for the 7D, seems to underscore how fantastic the 1DsIV will be. They really need to have a module that can attach to the 1DsIV (like the old motor drive for the F1) that has XLR inputs with a 1/4" headphone jack (a cine module). This will easily compete with the Red One. ... not that the 5DII doesn't already. Red really needs to reconsider their pricing. Things are changing quick.

But you forget, RED will also shoot higher resolution and uncompressed color.

Yes, but at what price? True, you will always be able to extract more out of the RAW uncompressed image, but I'm sure many like me that have been working with the narrow tolerances of films like Velvia and 50D for decades are comfortable with the JPEG equivalent in video as long as the image can accept at least a moderate amount of grading which as I understand it, it will.

Not quite uncompressed...anyway...

Between RED and the 35mm adapter craze, people are more open to using awkward frankenstein rigs if it saves a penny and yields seemingly professional results. Enter VDSLRs, and once these kinks are ironed out over the next few years, we won't be seeing as much RED/35mm adapter action on the low-budget/indie front.

The D90 tried to innovate, the 5D accidentally innovated, and if the 7D is what we hope it is, the bar has been obliterated.

Not to mention modularity, benefits of higher framerates, monitoring abilities, etc. Makes me wish they had a time machine...

If the 7d does things right though, I might not care too much longer.

Sounds like they could have a winner here. I'd still like to see what the picture quality is like, though. Let's see the compression rate and if they just skip pixels to get the video.

Don't get me wrong guys, I'm all about the 7D if it is what it's appearing to be. I'd rather spend $1700 on a VDSLR that does 1080/24p then $3000+ on a 2/3" Red Scarlet. I can't really deal with 3K res on my budget anyway.

Just pointing out that Red still has more features. Even if they do come with a price.

What lenses would this thing use - standard Canon glass, or something specific to this camera only?

You guys know waaaay more about DLSRs than I do so please excuse my ignorance, but other than the 24p change (which I know is a big deal) why is this camera garnering so much instant excitement?

john

To whom it may concern: 30/25/24p @ 1080 is true. 720/60p is not

Just got it confirmed.
That’s strange….why would two different translations indicate otherwise? Unless of course it is read wrong. Here’s hoping…

Don't ask me. The person I always get my news from, though, (omitted) deals with canon often. Maybe it got snuck in?

Doesn't really matter... 24p is enough in the camera to hold out until Scarlet arrives. If the 60p is ethen that's just an addition that I'll never use anyway. I really just want 24p so I don't have to lug the RED around for small jobs.

Yep, 17.5K without a lens. Scarlet is a pipe dream right now. Nobody knows what it will be until it finally comes out. I don't even consider it an option because it's not on the timetable till sometime in 2010 at the very earliest, and that's subject to change.

Its actually interesting to me, given the success of the 5D MII and the pressure Canon has felt from the semi-professional and professional film sector, that their press releases aren't more specific in regard to the industry. The GH-1 had a similarly vague initial release and there was a lot about it that wasn't really known until it was in hands - HDMI out, audio capabilities, and the nature of the 1080/24p for example.

Here's hoping that companies will figure this out and start making more meaningful statements.

It will use standard Canon EF glass, but because of the crop factor, you will need to get used to how each lens performs differently ie; your 50mm will now perform closer to an 85mm. The 7D will take EF-S lenses as well which are designed for the cropped cameras such as the rebel series and now the 7D.
