Canon 7D - Meet the HMC40 in the Sreets, Where it Counts!!! Unless your scared!

for professionals who have several cameras the 7d is probably a very good tool since it has some great features, especially for filmmakers. But as a sole camera, the 7d is too flawed.

I've been researching HD cameras for the past few weeks and I was considering an HMC40. Then I started to read about the D7, Magic Lantern, Mr Bloom etc ..... $1600 + a lens, supposedly as sharper than the EX1 etc ........ Now along comes this charlie and tells me the 7D is no good!!!

I need something for run and gun (Storm Chasing / Documentary shi*e) so the DVCPro codec seemed better for this type of stuff than AVCHD, fast pans, running around like a loon, dodging bullets etc but those bloody P2 cards $$$. Thanks mate, I'm even more confused now!!

The hmc 150 or maybe 151 in your case mate . It will not let you down .
It is avchd but 3ccd it does pans, swooshes, tilts and what have you .....

Honestly, I'm confused. The footage presented at the beginning of this thread is, well, kinda crummy compared to 7d footage I've been looking at. If he's badmouthing the 7d he did the exact opposite with that demo footage.

It's ok Criss it's a little something I like to call Sarcasm! :)

Here's a video I finished the other day with the 7D, HORRIFYING, JOB DESTROYING, CAREER JEPORDIZING FLAWS AND ALL!

OH MY GOSH JOHNNY, you will never recover from that one, You're definitely finished here on DVXUSER!!!!!

Johnny, what were you thinking! Destroy that camera, the image quality is horrible!

You had plenty of smoke, where were the mirrors? ; )

LOL
Damnit you're right it is all just smoke and mirrors... (mostly smoke)
Hadn't thought about it till you brought it up, touche!

Whatever, guys. All I did was show you what the thing actually does. I never told you you couldn't get great results out of it, only that there are circumstances where it can fail. I've gotten fantastic footage out of mine. But I've also shot stuff where it falls apart. Why does that offend you so much, to know what the actual truth is, on both ends of the spectrum?

I don't have a single problem with the 7D at its price point. Only place where I have a problem with it, really, is when people start saying it's capable of more than it actually is.

And I don't "give a rip" what anyone else says, either. It does what it does, and it doesn't do what it doesn't do, and that's all there is to it.

I completely agree with you. I'm greatful for the information. It's infromation that needed to be quantified. My issues were with the sky is falling crowd that saw the test and then decided... "hmmm, this camera sucks now, I don't care if there are good and even great looking clips out there, this camera sux!"
It's the same thing that was happening with the HVX200, and it pissed me off then. My cynicism is directed as a response to the reaction and not to the tests or you or anyother specific individual out there. I appologize if this has offended you or any person, but jeez it just rubs me the wrong way when people act like they can't think for themselves, I provided clips and a way over the top commentary so people would know I was being cynical and still some wondered why I had buyers remorse. And I don't think anyone is stupid and that's NOT what I was trying to imply. In fact I feel the opposite, people on here are very bright but don't want to digest the information for themselves, some just want an easy yes or no answer and with all the options that are currently available you have to think! HARD! We live in a time of great abundance when it comes to our tools, we are in a situation of an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the quality of work we can do for under $2000 comapred to just a couple of years ago.
I love you all and I hope everyone gets what they need to feel creative, successful and empowered! :)

See, Johnny, it's funny coming from you, because you're out there doing stuff with a little T1I, a camera that many people here would probably think was "beneath" them (it's "only" 30p, it's not a 7D, blah blah blah). Doesn't matter, you've made some gorgeous images with that inexpensive little product.

The DSLRs that we have today are phenomenal at their price point. Yes they can make awful video under certain deep-focus circumstances. If someone doesn't like that being pointed out, they should perhaps stick their head in the sand really, really far, plug their fingers in their ears, and chant "there's no place like home". But for the rest of us, knowing how the product works, knowing what it can do and what it can't do, prepares you to be able to do amazing things with it and keep yourself out of trouble.

I guess some people don't like that. Can't help that.

Your tone sure has softened from "awful" and "I would not use it for a paying gig". I don't recall words like "phenomenal" and "amazing" being used before now.

Just because you don't recall it, doesn't mean it wasn't there! I said way back in April that I'd seen footage from a GH1 that was jaw-dropping and nigh unto HPX3000 caliber. I said that what we shot in July looked fan-friggin-tastic.

And, while I'm at it, let's point out that one of the clips that I thought was kind of mediocre, caused this reaction from Kholi:

Later, in July, this was my quick review of the GH1 (again, still before thorough testing had been conducted):

The fact of the matter is that these cameras are technically pretty bad. That doesn't stop them from creating fantastic images if you keep them in their happy zone. But if you let them out of their happy zone they can completely ruin shots. Every one of them can do it. I think they're priced appropriately, and anyone who thinks they're getting a "red killer" for $1700 or $2000 is just delusional. But for what you get for under $2,000 they're unprecedented and excellent.

Yes, technically, they cheat with smoke and mirrors. And yes, the codec on the GH1 can puke. And yes, the 7D has horrific aliasing. And yes, if you go shoot a deep-focus shot of a neighborhood with picket fences and shingled roofs, the only word I would possibly use to describe the results is "awful". And, because of that, I wouldn't trust it to a paying gig. None of that has changed, it's all consistent with what I've been saying for the last five months. If you shoot primarily natural-type shots (people, landscapes, etc) and avoid the problem areas (straight lines, architecture, repeating patterns, and certain fabrics) and keep the focus shallow, then the smoke and mirrors works to produce fantastic results.

All along, I've said that when it's good, it's really good, and sometimes it ain't good. Then when I got into the detailed testing I was shocked that it could ever look as good as it does, seeing as I now knew how it worked. But I've since quantified it into what works well, and when it can puke, and it can definitely puke. So as the doctor says, "don't put it in situations where it pukes, and you'll be fine."

... When Barry was at the trade show and saw GH-1 footage he did liken it to looking as good as HPX3000 footage. I'm sure I could find the thread. A lot of us were hailing it as the second coming until the real tests started showing up.

Which, by the way, happens with *every* new camera release...

You've got the stages of "Camera Release" somewhere on these boards. It's pretty funny.

The last two stages are "Macgregor gets ahold of one and shoots something incredible with it, people realize it's just another tool and talent is what makes the image" and then "We all wait for the next camera"

LOOOOL
