Canon 5Dmark 3... Canon is listening

This is not an accurate reflection of how Canon releases these models and the logic is off base...TONS of products are updated even though the current model still sells. The T2i sold like hotcakes, but like clockwork, Canon released the T3i 1 year later. They are very systematic with their camera releases, and the fact is - PHOTOGRAPHERS are looking for improvements/upgrades every few years because many of them acually need new bodies by that time anyway (the lenses are their REAL investment) The AF system of the 5dMk2 is outdated as is the speed and some other things....If you think Canon will just rest and let Nikon or others take this segment- you're out of your mind! I may be out of my mind as well....in that digital hasn't been around that long,(so the timeframes may vary) but they don't WAIT for something to stop selling to release a new model....their history show's this.
So far with digital it goes like this
A new enthusiast camera every couple of years (30D, 40D,50D, 60D)
A new Rebel flagship every 1 to 1.5 years
A new APS H every 3 years
The first 5D had a life of 3 years, so if that holds true the MK3 (or whatever they decide to call it) will be here before 2012
The LONGEST digital lifespan of ANY Canon digital camera AFAIK is the current 1DS MK3...at around 4 years.
Technology moves at lightning speed...these companies can not AFFORD to wait (The prototype MK3 is probably already being tested/modified as we speak.)

I hope you're right but I'm sticking to my guns. We shall see.

Whoever said their PS3 plays PS2 games, you've got a specific model PS3 which was sold several years ago, they no longer make that model. Sony could release a backwards compatibility firmware update but they have not despite the numerous requests - the PS2 is still selling and is a competitive platform. Same with the 5D Mark II - no real reason to update something that has no competition but like I said, we shall see what the future holds. I hope it's bright but I have my doubts.

Canon, if you're listening, how about an orientable view finder?

And let's step up the focus points for still photography, add an intervalometer, and a better way to control speedlights from the camera body.

Thanks!

Last time I checked 2 + 4 = 6 and 3 + 5 = 8 ...I don't know where you got 9 or 11 from.

I got it from your post.

The 5DM2 has been out for just about 3 years now.

+ "it will most likely be 2 to 3 years before a mkIII is even in consideration".

+ "another 4 to 5 years tacked on after that for development and manufacturing".

= 9 to 11 year projected product cycle.

...which is ridiculous.

Even if it were "only" 6-8 years, it would still be ridiculous.

If the 5DMIII truly doesn't come out until 2017...I will buy you one. Bookmark this page.

The reason that most PS3's now don't play PS2 games is because they would need a hardware chip to play them. Sony put the hardware in some of the early PS3 models to bridge the gap between the console generations. Once they thought they had put enough room between the PS2 and the PS3 they stopped putting that PS2 emulation chip in to save money. If they could have done the backwards compatibility with software emulation instead of hardware emulation they would have. Besides that, Sony lost their asses on the PS3 in the beginning of the current console generation. They had to cut the price to be competitive with the Xbox 360 which was $200 cheaper.

Also, game console generations last about 5-6 years, while camera model upgrades are anywhere from 1-3 years on average. Thing is in comparison to a Canon camera, the PS3 exists in a completely different industry anyways. Besides firmware upgrades and price drops, video game consoles are pretty much the same animal from launch until the end of the average five year console period.

The bottom line is if Canon wants to compete on the digital cinema front, they will need to upgrade their top tier DSLR models (5Dmk2 and 7D), or bust out an affordable digital cinema APS-C sensor HD camera similar to what Sony and Panasonic have done. The question is does Canon want to compete with the AF100, FS100, the F3, and eventually the Scarlet? The other factor is that the camera landscape has changed drastically over the past two years. Canon might not want to sit on the 5Dmk2 too long, but of course that doesn't mean they won't. They could add some nice video/filmmaker centric updates to a new model in an 8D or 7Dmk2 or something like that if they don't release something to compete with the dedicated digital cinema cameras and don't want to mess with a new 5D model right now.

I now see what you were saying, haha. My bad.

I'm just repeating what he said, and he seemed to be genuine with everything else he was talking about, especially when he started talking about what was going on in Japan and how (I believe) Panasonic lost 3 of their engineers. He went on to say that Canon did not lose anyone, however they suffered damages to one of their main buildings.

My greatest fear is of the Canon suits.

We know what's needed.

The engineers at Canon are very capable and clued up, they could easily produce a 5DIII to satisfy all interested parties.

But do the stupid bean-counters know? They could just as easily dictate that the 5DIII has no better video than the 5DII, simply because they know no better.

There is no bottom to my contempt for suits and bean counters.

If i was a photographer, i wouldnt want so much video crap on my stills cam. Its fine as is.

whats needed is a 5D with a video body. not some hybrid frankenstein with video as a feature.

That's pretty much what I've been saying in my other posts, (Check out my "devil's advocate post) I don't think Canon will load up the 5DIII with video features, in fact it's entierly conceivable that Canon will ditch video in their high-end DSLRs, reserving H264 for their double and tripple digit models, while producing a dedicated D-Cine cam with all the bells-and-whistles that people need.

If they do work on the cine of the 5DIII it will be to cure the undoubted flaws in the current implementation.

yup i kept sending these messages to canon complaining and asking for features day by day 3 of them from made up googlemail accounts ,i made 3 new each day and used random name generator just to send them to canon ,but sent as different kind of people.men women ,russians, english speaking etc.
That was when there was only 7D and i wanted 24p update to 500D ,when they released 550D i stopped ,bought 550D and never looked back.Dont know if it worked but i got what i wanted.

I'm looking forward to Cinestyle and it's just around the corner. I hope it'll work with a 60D, I think I read that it will work with all Canons that supports picture styles.

we can all sit here and speculate when the 5dmkiii will be released/announced, what features it will have, but the bottom line is they will have to release something within the next few months, whether its a dslr or camcorder, that can match the new sony cams and gh2, if they dont want to lose sales and get left behind. we all know canon isnt stupid, theyre working on things to please all of us, both photogs and the film community.

At this point in the game if it still actually matters what we say to Canon as to what we want, then there is a very serious problem in our expectations. If they were serious about a release as we hoped in the current hoped for time frame of Autumn 2011, they would be far beyond the point of requests. So either our time frame is off or this is lip service from the Canon representative. I mean it's not like we haven't been asking for these things for the last two years anyhow.

Getting rid of all video functions and optimising the photographic core would certainly make die-hard 'togs very happy, no matter how much it would dismay folks here.

Video function doesn't impact the still photographic quality, which is already about as good as you can possibly get.

We have that already, its the TC-80N3.

If you were a photographer, you'd buy your cam without looking at the video specs, and never touch them, nor care they are there. It simply being there offending someone is simply stupid. Those people that whinge about it are internet experts not photographers.

fearing same thing :( basically because no video upgrade on the 5d = same crap video res on lower APSC models I could afford

If "Canon is listening" means hardware changes then yes, unless they were just "tweeks" release would be a good 2 years away, implying something like a 5 year cycle. Although this might be viable for a camera at the 1Ds level, it wouldn't be for a 5D.

I think (Hope) that "Canon is listening" implies firmware changes / optimisation for what people (And not just people on here) want. This could still be implemented for an Oct 2011-Jan 2012 release.

One way to keep both camps reasonbly happy (Though some people will never be happy, no matter what) would be to provide "bare-bones" video in the 5DIII body, while providing a plug in module (Like a battery pack, but bigger) with all the expensive gubbins (To use a technical term) to give XLR audio input, high quality pre-amps, level controls, and of course the heavy computing power to de-mosaic and down-convert the video to a clean 1080p 10 bit 4:2:2 or even 4:4:4 output to an external recorder of your choice.

Raw video? I don't know and won't speculate.

Could Canon's engineers do this? Undoubtedly. Will they be allowed to do this? I don't know but have my fears.
