Canon 5D vs. Panasonic GH1 ??

5D is soft at areas that are not critical focus, even at high aperture values on wide lenses....this bothers me. I've seen it in tests, in videos, and know it from experience shooting on it.

GH1's new high bitrate is awesome.

That's all any of these tests really say. We kind of already knew the 5D was soft....but it's nice and sharp where there's critical focus...of course there there's also moire.

i am unable to get a cleaner video from GH1 hack vs 5D so far . The banding lines in the GH1 quite has these squares. hmmmm. however Gh1 handling is sweet. But I don't think that it's enough.

This Will vazquez says he owns MarkII and 7D and used the GH13 on a key screen and says its the "cleanest" he has ever seen it. I can't wait to get my Sandsik extreme so I can hack mine already.

I haven't tried my Patriot class 10 but I have seen some people having issues with theirs. So I ordered the SanDisk 32gb extreme just for the GH1.
I have a 7D that is suppose to arrive tomorrow but am getting a refund as soon as it comes it. That was the closest I thought I could get to a MarkII till this hack came out. :)

I only shoot with a 5d so I don't have anything to offer for this comparison, but I recommend watching the Zacuto Great Camera Shootout 2010. It seems to be a well-thought out and unbiased test. It is especially intersting to see how these stack up to Kodak and Fuji film.

I saw this as well. Great video to watch. But it looks like film is still the best.... haha.

You cannot use the shootout assessment of GH1, cause that was prehacked. I am saying GH1 > 5Dmark2. However I think it's something worth looking into.

as noted by P.Bloom
He has settled on a 50mbit MJPEG codec (30p only currently, conformed to 24p) as being his favourite and this video below has been shot using that codec at 30p and 32Mbit AVCHD. It look ‘effin gorgeous. We have a new challenger on the market and guess what it’s over a year old! It looks like the “mud” issues have gone and the GH1 doesn’t suffer from the same nasty aliasing or moire that the Canons do due it’s better scaling algorithm.

I can tell you this…this hack is epic. It fixes what was essentially a crippled camera due to it’s low bit rate. What it is capable of now is a totally new camera and quite mindblowing…new life has been breathed into the GH1 that is for sure. I wonder how it would have fared in the Zacuto shootout with this new bit rate? The thing is it won’t replace my Canons. Yes the codec is a MASSIVE improvement but it doesn’t have the low light of the Canons, not even the T2i and doesn’t come close to the 5Dmkii, but still as MASSIVE leap up.

Yeah it didn't seem those guys were very into the GH1 in that shootout, they just kind a threw it in last for the hell of it. I think most people dismissed it for any serious work because of the extreme low bitrate codec. It's a new camera now.

I had the 24-105L at the same time as the 24-70L, 70-200 f2.8L IS and some well known primes, e.g. 24L, 35L, 85L & 135L. I can say without a shadow of doubt that the 24-105L was the softest of all of them by a very long way. Having tried 3 copies I sold them all.

How would you say the sharpness of the non L canon primes compare to the 24-105L zoom at mid range apertures f5.6/f8?

Depends on the specific lens but I can say in general, Canon primes, whether L series or not outperform L series zooms. the 100mm macro is probably the sharpest lens canon makes and it's not an L series. Even the 50mm 1.8 ($80) blows away the 24-70L in terms of sharpness at equivelent apertures.

I've actually found that the L series primes tend to be softer than the non L series primes due to their specialty purpose. L series designation doesn't mean anything accept that it fits on any EOS body (full frame or cropped)..it doesn't mean sharp but it generally encompasses lenses that tend to be very hard and expensive to manufacture such as the the ultra-fast 85mm F1.2L. It's a amazing lens but you shouldn't be buying this lens for the sharpness alone...there are much cheaper and sharper solutions at the same focal length.

I,ve been comparing the sharpness between the 50mm 1.8 the the 18-55 and of course it's no contest at 50mm. For the wide range end I was going to go for a better quality zoom, but now I think it's better to build the prime collection. I want to see how sharp a picture I can get out of this 550D in HD video. The 28mm f2.8 looks very sharp for a cheap price, and the 28mm f1.8 though brighter doesn't seem to become as sharp till it's stopped to 2.8 anyway.
There aren't many primes wider than 20mm on a budget and from what I seen the Canon 20mm 2.8 isn't razor sharp. I have a Zeiss 16mm distagon t2 but in an Arri standard mount so unless I rip the mirror out of my 550D is a no go. What else is there in an untra sharp prime 18mm or wider? Or maybe better to wait till the next 5D to work on the wide end primes.

Under 20mm, check out the Leica R 19mm f2.8 (newer version)... one of the best wide angles there is. Not sure about under 18mm.

The Canon 20mm isn't too bad. The lack of sharpness is mainly at the edges. The center is decently sharp so for the 550D, it should be fine. The 5D is tougher on that lens.

Worth noting that build quality aside optically the significant thing about L series glass is that it uses aspherical elements. The GH1 kit lens also uses aspherical elements. Just putting that out there.

For wide angle an often forgotten lens is the Olympus 21mm f2. Very few lenses out there with that kind of speed and on par quality wise with the Leica 19mm. This is one of them and a lot cheaper to boot.
