Canon 5D MKIV officially announced.

I would have to agree with waiting until the Photokina show. Who knows, maybe an a6300 II will be mentioned as sony seems to pop out cameras like they are going out of style. XT-2, GH5 Sony offerings... It is a tough decision. The Sony's can use Canon lenses so that is a nice nod to them. Also Sony has a large ecosystem of solid video performing hybrids. You have some serious A, B & C cameras all within the family. I don't know if they all match color wise but getting an A7R II along with an RX10 II and an RX100 IV would be a kit ready for a lot without breaking the bank.

I have the 5D MKIII setup with ML RAW and an RX10 II right now. The RAW images look great but the setup does not instill confidence. So I am looking to commit to a system for video use as I will keep the MKIII for stills. I am a single person crew so multiple smaller cameras gets me further than one killer cam. What would concern me is the Fuji being the lone wolf in the lineup compared to Sony or Panasonic. If Panasonic releases a great GH5 as well as an LX200 I might be swayed in that direction.

"comparing it to Justin Bieber. Just ask yourself if it gives you Bieber Fever."
Hah! Maybe he will be available for the official rollout..like Chackie Jan for the XC10.

For those wondering why Canon put DCI 4k on the 5D4, while the video specs are so limited otherwise: because the crop is 1.83x if you're only going to use 3840 instead of 4096 and that turns this FF camera into m43 instead of S35 (which is 1.39x but they'll try to sound as if it's APS-C and close enough to what they have).

Can the $3500 5D4 beat the $700 GX85? Interesting question. We'll know soon enough.

My first car was an '84 Fiero. Four speed manual. Black with ground effects. The couple of times it ran good it was a pleasure to drive. But mechanical and electrical problems galore. As a buddy said at a party one night "I don't care what people say, this is a cool looking car." It was. Had a tastefully placed Ministry (the band) sticker on the back corner. Back when teenagers still put bumper stickers on their cars. Something I don't see much anymore for some reason. Too bad they didn't have engines built like Honda Civics.

That Fuji X-T2 looks cool in so many ways. But after reading a couple reviews it sounds like it still has some things that need to be worked out from a video perspective. Let's hope some firmware fixes are in progress.

I like the uproar by everyone. Maybe Canon will realize they can't pull the same stuff in 2016 anymore. Enough already.
If the wholesale cost is ~ $1,750, as rumored, then you'll see a big push from the retailers. The problem for them is that, if one begins to search online for the previews, he'll find a lot of negativity on the model. And most people with $3,500 to spare will search online before committing to a purchase.

As I've mentioned before, when MKIII came out in 2,012, there was no competition with superior specs in the same price range. Additionally, pro 4K video cameras in the sub-$10,000 category didn't even exist. Within a month, 5DMKIV will be facing competition with better specs and better (aka lower) price.

How do you judge a failure? ...
I actually knew a guy in 1986 - an older guy compared to me back then - who bought a new Fiero when it came out in 1986. His automotive tastes were ridiculed, to say the least.

It took GM three years to correct the car's flaws and make it a reasonable value buy. Canon can probably release a "videocentric" version of 5D tomorrow, had they wish to do so. Unlike GM, they don't seem to want to do so.

I was messing around on-line just after midnight and saw the pre-order "go live" on B&H. Click, click, click… I pre-ordered. I have two 5D mkII's and a mkIII. I have no doubts I'll like the mkIV just as much as the others when I got them. Everyone seems to be making a big deal about the video features or lack thereof. I couldn't care less. I'm buying this, just like every other still camera I have, TO SHOOT STILLS...
This is a video oriented site and a majority of members realizes that the technology to build a $3,500 hybrid camera with quality video features has been there for, at least, two years. NX1 had a superior 4K with a superior codec for a superior (aka lower) price back in 2014. Thus there's been an expectation among many that Canon was actually interested in bringing out a camera worthy of its $3,500 price tag. But it's basically selling yesterday's technology at today's prices.

GH5 is going to be a heavy hitter for Panasonic

PS. As far as stills go, Olympus OMD 1 MKII is supposed to have the (Sony developed) pixel shifting technology that will allow it to have a 48 MPX resolution. And it will have 4K too. Pentax has the pixel shifting technology on its recently introduced K1. Using the essentially the same sensor as in D800/810, it manages to deliver excellent dynamic range and resolution for under $2,000. It's also gathered very impressive reviews. On B&H, out of 46 comments, 44 gave it five stars.

Why does everyone say the GH5 will be a slam dunk success when we don't have specs, and they managed to screw up the GH4 xlr and low light? Looks more like the Japanese cabal, remember that is legal in Japan, got together and decided to not bring out an uncrippled hybrid camera. Even Sony 7 series all have flaws.

My first car was an old non-running 55 Kurtis 500 which I bought as a young teen with my savings. My mother was furious and made me give the car back and get my savings back. If she only knew what a restored Kurtis 500 goes for now.

At any rate, I would imagine most companies judge a products success on sales numbers. The Fiero might not have been all that, but look at the sales numbers.

Same with the new 5D mk IV. It may not have all the features a working videographer might need, but I would wager it will sell like hotcakes. I won't be getting one at this point, but remember the majority of Canon's client base is not working professionals like you and me. We are just the tip of the iceberg.

Well if the camera was perfect, you would only need to buy one. EVER!

That would be a poor business model. They want to keep selling you cameras for your lifetime.

From 43rumors.com

And now we got a first spec info from a trusted source:
1) The camera has no crop for 4K
2) 4:2:2 10 bits internal recording!!!!

And somehow these "trusted sources" always seem to get it wrong. :(

Canon has released a 15 minute video describing the autofocus and video features of the MKIV. It can be viewed at newsshooter.com

It's Numero Uno on the B&H Digital Camera charts already.

But, as the old sales adage goes, people buy emotionally, then justify their purchases rationally. Which describes the Canon Rumors forums to a tee.

I have come to the realization that the 5D MKIV is what it is, a great stills camera that happens to shoot crippled 4k. And that's fine. Canon will have a runaway hit on their hands and most people who buy it will be thrilled with it (for stills). I agree with those who say if you want a video camera, buy a video camera. Canon has ceded the hybrid DSLR market to Sony, Panasonic and Fuji, what's wrong with that? If they made the 5D MKIV with every video feature that most of us want, why would we need to buy a C100, C300, etc.?? I will go so far as to say it would be really stupid of Canon to have made the 5D MKIV into a great video camera, would make no sense. I just steered a good friend who asked yesterday if she should buy the 5D MKIV to the Fuji XT2. She will mostly shoot video, some stills work, she is a pro and wants quality. When I pointed out the differences to her between the two cameras in video capability, she said, "Why would anyone buy the 5D MKIV if they wanted to do video?"

Precisely.

If you don't have a collection of Canon glass, the choice is easier. Luckily for Canon, they have one of the best brand positioning in the whole industry and every new videographer will consider Canon when it comes to buying their first gear.

That would be a great course to offer in most film/broadcast schools, Equipment 101.

i am really not sure why anyone would think that the 5D MKIV would be a great stills camera? maybe compared to the MKII or MKIII? any D800, D810, A7RII is simply way better in pretty much every way....and cheaper....and almost 2 years old...the MKIV looks like to be a good/solid contender right now but i doubt it will even beat any of the existing still cameras (mirror or mirrorless) as an all around still camera....add in that one can use pretty much any mount lens on sony bodies....and the price difference?
from a still standpoint i think the motion jpeg route can come in handy for events to be able to pull good enough for emergency stills from video.....but in reality i have done that from 4K streams from red and sony cameras for a while, you don't need motion jpeg for that either....
the MKIV will sell like crazy but it makes no sense to me because no matter which way you look at it, there are far better solutions out there for any use....
i won't even go into the discussion that we of course do know that it might now finally be up to the level of 2 year old still cameras and sony and nikon will release new bodies within the next couple of months which will make the MKIV even worse....

I do not think that is a statement that you can back up or is true at all. Pros continue to buy and use Canon cameras over other brands. Yes all cameras are getting better and the gaps are disappearing but the MKIV is a very nice still camera. To say the D800 or A7rII are better in every way is just not playing out in the still world. Also, the cameras you list are all over $3,000 so how much cheaper are they?

Pros use DX series for sports and action because, outside of video cameras, it's the best tool for what they do. And they can't use video cameras due to the contractual obligations.

5D, in all its iterations, is often used by the newsies where one needs to capture a moment, with the quality of the image itself being of secondary importance. Here, Canon has held a dominating role for such a long time, its ecosystem guarantees the company a slew of repeat customers.

But things can change in a hurry. A couple of years ago, C300 was a similarly dominating presence in the ENG, reality and cable TV and, over the last two years, it ceded a huge portion of its market to FS-7. Canon's presence in the high end pro market of features and scripted TV is minuscule. C500 has not been able to compete with Red, ARRI and Sony.

In any case, the best thing that can be said about 5D MKIV's video is that it is more likely to result in C200 in the near future. Because, if Canon won't make C200, Sony will.
