Canon 5D MKIV officially announced.

According to B&H it is $3499 and will be available on 8th Sept

I am sure many will buy this for video rather than the 1DXII.

With the new 24-205 f4 L II lens the price is $4599 usd.

There is also a new 16-35 f2.8 L III lens priced at $2199 USD.

No 4K out via the HDMI. Only internal with the 1.74 center crop. For $3,500, very blah.

interesting, hdr video.
I don't even see any talk about a log gamma. Where did you get the hdr video reference from?

Edit: I found it, here. It's based on an interleaved exposure method, and therefore not something I'd like to use unless performance was absurdly awesome. Also: only for 1080p at up to 30 fps.
And from that same dpreview article: "there's still no option for a flat or log gamma profile".

I really don't see how this is better for video than an a6300, which comes at less than a third of the price.

Also: we were already talking about it on The 5D Mark IV thread.

Not much to get excited about, really. Though I don't think anybody was expecting much from this one.

For stills though, it looks like a solid improvement.

When the 1DXII doesn't have 4K out via HDMI, it is natural that the 5D Mark IV won't also have it.

Many are dishing the 1.74 crop. Just to remind that there are many folks who use 7D and that is 1.6 crop (APS-C).

Wildlife guys and sports fellas shooting from the stands won't mind the 1.74 crop. So also the press fellows and live events guys shooting from the back of the room.

The problem with the big crop is that it puts the $3500 5D4 against the $1000 a6300 instead of the $3500 a7S II. And even fighting a camera that costs less than a third of the price, it's the cheap one that has better specs (slog2, 4K out, EVF). I know specs are not all, but really, at $3500 vs $1000 it's a very tough sell.

The 5D4 is a camera for photogs. Canon still wants us video shooters to go with the C line. Sell me a C100 for $1500 or a C300 II for $5000 and I might be fine with that. Right now, Canon DSLRs are underperforming for video, and, *FOR ME*, the C line is too expensive.

Yet people hate on the GH4 with metabones which has less of a crop!!

I do not think the a6300 should be used as a comparison. The a6300 II (when it comes out) with the overheating and horrid rolling shutter fixed would be a better fit imho

It's clear Canons aim with DSLR cameras these days is to make a tool for the stills shooter that might use video occasionally. Mainly wedding and wildlife. For us filmmakers a 5D can't be considered our main camera as this is not Canons intention.

This is far from what Sony are doing or even Panasonic. They make cameras that have one foot in each camp not being great at either but doing both pretty well.

I really don't think that Canon's C-line is too expensive with the C100 being quite reachable. It has everything a film maker needs to get started producing very cinematic footage with just basic knowhow.

Granted, no one wants to buy one right now, since it should be updated soonish, but if you want to shoot film with Canon, look no further than the C100. Hopefully a mkIII is around the corner and Canon can move that to 4k and the XC-10/C300 mkII codec. It would be GREAT if it was 10bit but I wouldn't count on it.

Yes, it is all preordained in this industry. The lines a drawn between the big camera makers and the same story gets repeated. The still side is Canon's bread and butter but time is against them as mirrorless is a better approach in a dual photo/video world. This is not be the holy grain of video but still it might be a great tool. Although one has to wait for the reviews to see if there are any gotchas like the video being soft for some reason...

Looking at stills, A6300 comes very close at 24 MPX vs. 30. And it has better video. And costs $2,500 less. And now there are smart adapters that work reasonably well with the EF glass.

I obviously understand what Canon is trying to do but, at this point, MKIV is not a good value buy. Even, if for some, it's Canon or bust. They desperately need a $4,000 C200 to remain in the game for a lot of video shooters.

IMO, everyone will be let down if their expectations are in the wrong place. Canon has clearly drawn the line with its interests. They only add video features to appear on a spec sheet and to supply the absolute minimum requirement for some shooters. They are not interested in DSLR cinematic video acquisition....period. They don't care about Sony or if they are giving them business. If you are more apt to shoot stills.....this is a great option. If you are interested in video....its like going to Taco Bell and trying to order a burger. You will NEVER be satisfied with the outcome.

Canon's video centric DSLRs are like eating burgers at a fast-food taco shop. FYI....there is a gourmet burger shop right next door with a line around the block for half the price and all the condiments you can eat....with a Sony logo on the billboard. I hate that I have to say it.....cause I'm a Canon guy.

Yes but Taco Bell hamburgers have a cinematic look to them. :)

Seriously though, I bet this will be a solid performer and make very nice images for normal type DSLR shooting. I am interested in what the 1080p quality will be. It would be wise for Canon to make this stellar since folks will be down on the 4k crop. But they don't listen to me.

I'm really hoping the 1080P isn't mush....like the 1DXII. It would be a shame to be forced to use the MJPEG just to get any sharp footage out of the camera. These days, I just can't stand to watch or shoot mushy Canon HD footage.
