Canon 5D MKIII Spotted In The Wild?

The photo looks a bit dodgy but with Nikon about to announce the D800 the MKIII can't be far off.

I certainly hope so - it's been a long time since the Mark II came out, and the C300 (and it's mighty price tag) far beyond my ability to buy.

If they don't announce by NAB, it's Nikon here I come.

No swivel LCD? Come on Canon, whats up with that. after having swivel, I don't think I could go back to non swivel. hope it's just a prototype. That would be a huge fail on Canons part.

The body design of the camera in the images that is clearly not the 1Dx looks to me more like a 7D -- 7DMarkII? -- than a 5DMkIII... But, who knows...

I hope that the inminent introduction of the D800 next month will put a bit pressure on Canon and we will able to see the 5DMkIII in the horizon sooner than what it would be expected.

It's definitely a staged set of photos. The photographer is clearly showing off the equipment. It also involves known lenses that Canon have announced, but not yet released. So you have to suspect that it is some sort of viral marketing from Canon, probably with regard to the forthcoming D800. It's also very interesting that it's such a clear shot, and clearly not a disguised prototype. It looks production ready. You have to also suspect that Canon is playing their cards close to their chest, because with such a ready working camera they could already have announced it. Maybe they have more than one option to go with, and they want to see Nikon play their cards first, before deciding on their next move. All speculation, so take what I say with a big pinch of salt. It's all harmless if you keep it in proportion. I'm just interested in how it's all going to translate into the more affordable cameras. We've seen the big gun, but not the rest. This is a bit different, because in recent years the new technology has tended to debut in cameras lower down the food chain. So it was predicable what there would be in the higher end stuff. But this time you can't be sure how much of what is in the 1DX will migrate downwards, specifically as regards the image processors and video. The 1Dx has different image processors than the digicams. This is a departure from what happened before with Canon, where the same image processor was used in all their stills cams.

I'm interested in seeing what video specifications from the D4 go to the D800... And then, what's going Canon to do with the 5DMkIII in relation to this (let's hope they're going to do something).

I don't think you'll see swivel screen (Or a pop-up flash, for that matter) on a 5Dx, or a 7Dx any more that you will on a 1D, just not a part of a pro-spec camera, and a point of weakness. Especially of they increase the robustness of the 5D body to at least 7D levels or even more.

the camera on the 600mm is different than the camera on the new 200-400mm.

the body on the 600mm is clearly not a 1D body but the body on the 200-400mm *is* a 1D body. is it the 1DX? couldnt say for sure but it makes sense that it is.

I agree. Introduces a point of failure/breakage for minimal benefit. If you're buying a $3K (or more) body and you'll just buy a monitor.

I think it is going to be announced in the next few months around the Nikon announcement.

They will not want to lose people to Nikon.

I dont agree with this at all. I highly doubt this is a marketing scheme.

First of all look at the qualifiers I put "you have to suspect" i.e. I don't know, but you have to suppose that is a likely explanation. Marketing was a poor choice of words, in newspaper terms what I meant would be called a spoiler. However, whether it's deliberate or an accident, it's without precedent. I've followed still camera releases for ages and to my knowledge there's never been leaks of images like this before. There's also no attempt to cover anything up, the photographer must be identifiable and there's a No.1 sticker on the 200-400mm f4 IS L + 1.4x, which has never been shown before as a working lens. So there doesn't seem much doubt it's genuine. Plus unusually there's EXIF data on the photo showing it was take non 22 Jan this year with a Canon 1Ds MkIII, 100m away. There's also apparently 22 minutes between shots. Although EXIF data can be faked. Normally if Camera manufacturers have any ownership of copyright or control over the photographer they get these images pulled right away. Even if it's not deliberate lots of Canon users maybe glancing at the possiblity of a D800, have a good idea there's a 5D mkIII coming down the pipeline in the near future. I did clearly say "so take what I say with a big pinch of salt. It's all harmless if you keep it in proportion", which in UK English means it might not be as it seems. My point was simply here's some possibilites, make what you will of it, but don't take it too far.

I agree with you 100% ....I don't think it was marketing but a strategic leak, and I honestly believe that this go round Canon will be RIGHT there with a response when Nikon makes it's D800 announcement. After all....both the D700 and 5DMK2 replacements are highly anticpated by not only photographers, but video guys as well. Will the Nikon offer anything new for Nikon video like the D4, will the MK3 fix the issues and continue the 5D's reign as the "it" camera for HDSLR production. All interesting stuff and I guess I must just be hoping that it will all happen early February

If it wasn't intentional, that I can believe, and they're now field testing advanced pre-production models -- you're looking at at least, at least, six months until you can buy one at B&H, and that's not factoring in the three to five month back order. If it was an intentional leak, that I can believe, then it means they're trying to poo-poo on the D800 announcement but aren't yet in a position to formally announce any release. So, worse timetable.

The only "CR2" Canonrumors.com ever released on a 5D Mark 3 was on a March/April announcement. This makes sense, but doesn't fit in with historical patterns, and it would be strange for Canon to announce the 5D Mark 3 around the release of the 1Dx. Meaning, going by Canon history, they'd want the 1Dx out on the streets for at least a few months before the announcement of an upcoming 5D Mark 3.

Of course, the earthquake/tsunami messed with things, then Canon rushed the 1Dx announcement out the door way ahead of schedule to cover their bases when everyone went nuts over the November 3rd announcement, so perhaps something out of the ordinary should be expected.

Bottom line -- it's coming, and it won't suck -- but I'd be shocked if you (meaning not Philip Bloom or Vincent LaForet) can actually receive one from B&H before September or October or later.

Hmm. if you are concerned about vulnerability, leave it locked into the body. Otherwise..allow the flexibility to view above or below...without an external monitor/battery and cable making for a really vulnerable setup. Did having a fold out screen diminish the GH2?
