Canon 55-250 EF-s ?

ROCKMORE

I need a long lens (200+) for a shoot Saturday and don't have the cash in hand for the 70-200 f4L which is what I know I should get. I can't find one to rent or borrow in time either. Yesterday I shot a few store tests with the 55-250 EF-s and it is sharper then I expected. Also focuses close and has is, so for around $220 can I go wrong? Anyone shot with this lens?

Don't know if this means much, but mostly positive feedback from these buyers for sharpness. Same impression I got from my quick tests.

For the price, it is a good lens - one of the better of the entry-level lenses, IMO. It is very sharp; I rarely use it for video, but it takes great stills. Of course it's not a constant aperture, nor all that fast, but if you have decent lighting or if you are shooting outside, it will get the job done. Hopefully the work it does will put you closer to getting its big brother.

it will get the job done..

Thanks, It got the job done.
I actually came up with the cash for the 70-200 f4 by Friday. I had both lenses on the camera and shot some tests. With the longer range of the 55-250 and IS my gut feeling was that it was a better and safer choice for my project. As it turn out I was shooting out of the back of a car (on a tripod) for 2 days 24 hours over 1,100 KM of bad roads across Java Island. No way the 70-200 without IS would have worked. I would have lost 80% of my shots or more. This 55-250 is a great value. Canon sells some lenses way under their value to get people hooked on the features like IS then later will upgrade to L grade lenses at 5 to 10x the price. This is a good way to educate the consumer Canon makes great lenses at all levels.
