Canon 4K/60p+ prototype

They said this was a concept cam so considering it's from canon I don't expect to ever see this camera. The technology may come back from them but in two years or so, anyone else notice the massive box in between the cam and tripod? what was that a mini pc to handle the data? either way it's cool to see this stuff but it reminds me of jvc's 4k camera they keep bringing out every new trade show but never release or improve from the looks of it. Canon sure can put on a show though.

All true, until something ships from any vendor the rule is "take it with a grain of salt".

I'm not a rabid-Red-Maniac like so many redusers are, but to be fair, footage from a working prototype of Scarlet has been seen on Reduser.

Also, that Panny AF100 and Sony 35mm cam -ALSO- will need to be fully kitted out with accessories. So where a potential Scarlet body is $4.5k, and kitted out is double that. The Panny and Sony will also end up kitted out at 50%-100% of the cost of the body. Which puts them significantly higher cost than the Scarlet.

Sorry for hijaking the thread. moving on...

the scarlet body thing - you need to add essentials not accessories just to make it function

any other camera - you can add accessories if you please or want to (it's an option)

True. The Scarlet working prototype was also pre-bug. Who knows how far along they honestly are now. Though they say EOY release...

I still haven't read just how much a Panny AF100 package will contain, or cost. Same with the Sony 35 Cine cam. Viewfinder? Lens? SXS/P2 cards? Plate? Who knows?

I too would agree that it's at least 18 months until the guts of this Canon 4k camera make it into a camcorder body with video production features we expect to see. By then a tremendous amount could change.

Not really.... the Panny ships with LCD, EVF, power and pro ins/outs... what's that over at Red... $5k-$6k?

If you are talking lenses, tripod, storage, matte box etc... that is a variable and is also something that most people already have.

As I noted, that AF100 looks more like your dad's RCA Selectavision VHS camcorder than anything new and modern.

Very true. But Id still prefer a selectavision shape over a DSLR shape.

Oh and Canon's 4k hairdryer. I think its great that things just seem to go further and further our way as the competition heats up.

Interesting. I wonder what sort of effect that high photosite density will have on a 2/3" chip.

True. The Scarlet working prototype was also pre-bug.

New footage from working Scarlet 2/3 has been posted since the bug was popped. It's just a very short bit showing the AF on a Canon Lens using their Canon mount.

No argument about most of that. However, I have all the items you mentioned in your list, and yet every time I buy a new rig, I budget 50% extra for accessories and I almost never stay in budget before I am fully ready for pro-shooting.

Bloom said it was actually a working camera, but just concept, so they won't be releasing *this* camera.

I have to ask:

What is Canon's track record with "Concept" designs? All to often companies seem to come out with concepts that are great and then, a couple years later, turn out to be the new model Camry. :-KnockedOut(D

2/3" and 8 megapixels so the pixel size is the same with the 1/3" 1080p Canon models and the lens has a smaller aperture ratio compared to those. The pixel quality must be identical on the sensor level, so it should be comparable if the 4K compression is >100mbit GOP.

It's interesting that unlike Panasonic, they didn't want to kill the high resolution still mode and they also wanted a 20x video zoom. But a video zoom with a very large sensor was impossible, so they put 8 megapixels on 2/3" and got a very small pixel size compared to the AF100 or any other 2/3" camcorder.

Small pixel high resolution CMOS 2/3" is head to head with Scarlet 2/3". It makes sense if it's $7,000. But the 1/3" fixed zoom Canon is $7,000. Hm...

Stu Maschwitz wrote a hilarious blog entry about this camera. Favorite line, regarding Canon spending resources on its development:

I look at this thing and see my parents returning from Vegas with a sheepish expression on their faces, saying “Remember your college fund?”

wow, what an incredibly stupid, arrogant & short-sighted opinion fluff piece. remind me to never go to that blog again.

That thing looks like a hair dryer. And a 2/3 sensor?

And what is this?

That is merely a 7D body, with no nameplate so that our dearly beloved Canon could send everyone into spasms of delight. :)

I'm really curious to see how the 60D turns out. :)

And back to the thread topic...

The 4k concept camera does look like a hairdryer. I'm still laughing over those posts on the second page.

His blog has been a little lacking in the past few months but I don't suggest writing off Stu so quickly. Check out his other posts, especially when he writes about color.

You're welcome to whatever opinion you like about my writing of course, but I just thought I'd clear up that I neither consult for nor work for RED.

-Stu

Okay, now that someone else stepped up and said it, I'll comment.

Stu is an amazing colorist and compositer. No one in their right mind would deny that. But while he made some snippy comments that made me chuckle, I completely agree with Cowpunk on this. Why Stu would spend so much time bashing the camera for what it isn't, then go on a tirade against DSLRs, then a tangent waving a fanboy flag for Red, whom he either works for or consults for... it all just completely rubbed me the wrong way.
