1DC: Canon 1DC woes

My take is that a lot of people might look down at GH5 because it is not a "pro camera" per se but, if one can get pro camera quality images with it, then there's less and less need to invest into the higher end bodies.

Well, preconceived opinions rarely help. It's always better to test and evaluate for one's own specific use case.

When GH4 came out in 2014, Luke Neumann said that he was going to sell his Red and go with several GH-4's.

He has upgraded to an Epic W Helium as far as I know. That won't rule out that he uses smaller cameras on the side of course. Then again, some bloggers/profiles change their cameras on a semi weekly basis!

GH4 was bad in low light capabilities. I don't expect GH5 to dramatically improve in that area. Whenever a new camera comes, people do make some hyperbolic statements. Even Shane Hurlbut had made some in favour of 1DC when it was launched. Every camera has its strengths and its weaknesses. We need to decide if the strengths of a camera are in tune with our requirements. Rest all is immaterial, except for discussing in internet forums.

I'd like to be the person who has the wherewithal to go through two Helium's per week. It'd be nice to schlep gear in my Rolls Royce Phantom (phantom because it doesn't exist).

As a side note, there's a YouTube channel owned by a few UK blokes - since they're in UK, they have to referred to as blokes - who purport to copy the sound of guitar gods on a budget. And the funny thing is that, the blokes' lack of chops aside, they can deliver a very close David Gilmour or Jimmy Page facsimile sound for under £2,000. A £400 Strat clone, £300 worth of pedals and a £1,000 amp is pretty much all you need (+ the chops, naturally). Which is precisely the way it's going in video.

Chris and Jordan from the Camera Store (and their smoke alarm setting friends) have tried to recreate the famous Joe Pesci - Ray Liotta restaurant scene from the "Goodfellas" (How am I funny? Do I amuse you?). There's some NSFW dialog (it's a mobster movie, you @$%^&*). The whole video is shot in GH5 in V-log. A $2,100 (if one includes V-log) GH-5. Of course, they got some high end glass but nonetheless ....

I loved the scene and the time and effort put in is appreciated for sure, but this one screams video to me...maybe it's the lighting.

It's the combination of the LUT, the acting (Jordan is actually not bad but no Liotta, Chis isn't drunk enough) and directing.

The funny thing about the actual scene (get it? ... funny) from the movie is that it was entirely improvised by Pesci.

(NSFWL)

The part that cracks me up the most is at 2:25-2:33 when he turns to Sonny/the owner, lol.

Did this land in the intended thread? =)
Yes ... sort of ... I believe ... because it was supporting my point expressed above that the consumer grade cameras such as GH5 (but also Sony A6300/A6500) are capable of delivering a look worthy of a high end pro product. I do wish the TSN crew - playing the Jimmy Conway crew - used a relatively inexpensive Panasonic MFT glass though.

PS. I realize that the main purpose behind the project was showing off themselves rather than the camera used in the shoot. CP+ starts on Thursday but the news of the upcoming cine style cameras will probably begin to leak in March just prior to the NAB'17. One has to assume that the "bang of the buck" ratio will go up again. Which means that, had someone been deciding whether to buy 1D C or wait a month, I'd recommend waiting a month. Or two.

Any new cameras probably will not be available until several months after being announced, so the wait will be longer.

So what does everyone think? Is a canon 1dc mark ii in the works, could it be announced at NAB in april? I recently sold my canon c300 mark ii because it was getting to heavy for me to carry do to back issues, so I am in the market for a smaller footprint that is easier on the back.. Was taking a long hard look at the 1dx mark ii , but I want to wait and see if canon might possibly announce a 1dc mark ii..

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt there will every be a 1Dc mkII. I'd like to be proved wrong. I suggested to Canon that they offer a re-badgeing of the 1Dx mkII for a price, where they'd also include Canon Log 3. That would sort of make sense to me since it seems like a manageable amount of extra work for Canon while making some users happy and making some extra money.

I'm shooting with a 1Dx mkII now (still have a 1Dc that I bought when it was released). I'm using the Technicolor CineStyle (which I never liked with my 5D mkII/mkIII). I don't really have issues with it with the 1Dx mkII. Maybe it's the codec or some other underlying technical little thing. I would still prefer proper Canon Log, though (especially Canon Log 3).

Don't just look at the 1Dx mkII—test it for yourself.

Having shot with this 1D-body form factor for so long, it would really be a step backwards to use a more cumbersome system. I do both stills and video privately and commercially (small scale).

A perfect solution for me would be a 1D-series body that was more properly adjusted for video. A more protruding mount that allowed for internal ND's. At least 6 stops. A dedicated Digic DV in addition to the normal Digic chips that the camera needs for photo. This would allow for a proper codec and XFAVC-intra. Internal 10bit at around 400Mbps to CFast.

10bit, proper codec (to Canon Log) and internal NDs are the main things for me. There are lots of little software based things that could belong too, but they are more 'nice to have' in my opinion.

Sounds like my dream camera.

And so it shall remain... a dream I mean... =) Very unlikely to happen.

But yes... and then when you consider they could keep the 4k DCI pixel grid at the S35 physical size—basically take the C300 mkII sensor and cut a FF wafer—yet allow for a full readout of the full frame at 60fps, we'd land at around 6.5k (haven't done the proper math), we'd have a pretty nice system right there =)

There are rumors that Sony will announce A9 (or something in that vein) around the NAB ... and it'll be kind of, sort of like 1D C MKII that Andree has described (and requested). Now, if Sony goes that way, then Canon pretty much has no choice but to come out with C100 MKIII (with 4K, etc).

And the new cameras will indeed likely be shipping late summer (or summer, 2018/winter 2019 for BMD).

PS. Me still thinks a lot of models have been delayed by the April, 2016 Kumamoto earthquake (like Nikon DL series, for example ... delayed permanently).

PPS. Speaking of the DL series, Tony Northrup thinks that Nikon canceled it in order to bring out something much better. I say that's a possibility. He also pointed out how the number of Google searches for "Nikon" has dwindled over the years.

Thanks Andree for the response.. I actually just placed an order for the 1dx Mark ii because it is exactly what I need.. Light enough for me to carry where it will not hurt my back, plus being weather sealed.. My c300 Mark ii like I mentioned was starting to bother my back carrying it from my SUV to the shoot site, plus it never came out if there is a hint of bad weather possible, I would not even bother setting it up.. I will be be testing it out this sat at a fireworks shoot.. :)

Considering how poorly the 1dc sold, I'd be shocked if they release an new version - that was their intent with the 1dxM2 - even tho there is no log. Which is insane. I have also tested exhaustively the "4k" from the 1dxM2 versus the 1dc and the 1dx doesn't hold a candle, even in picture style. So the AF may be great, but for me, IQ is king, and the reality of working with a DSLR "camera" for video is that, yes, there are many compromises. They began as 9and still largely are,) still cameras. So you just need to decide what you value most: AE, internal ND, stabilization? Sounds like you need a video camera. On the other hand, if you need; stealth, the ability to stabilize and reframe in post while still acheiving a stunning image in a box that's anything but easy and ergonomic, well, maybe the 1dc is for you. Specs can be debated all day but all that matters is your final cut - did you get what you want and does it look how you want? If the answer is yes, who cares if it's 8 bit, 10 bit? Do what makes the most sense for you and how and what you shoot.

That said, 2 questions re; 1dc. What have you fond to be the best and most beautiful grading workflow for c-log? And also - do you guys have this issue?: in c-log, when in video mode, neither AF works. Thoughts?

With the 1D C Mark II, Canon still could bring the first 8K DSLR, like it was the case for 4K with the 1D C. I still have hope for a Mark II.

8K with Dual Pixel AF. It would be a cool camera. Am wondering the file sizes. Even though they make dual CFast 2.0 card slots, it would guzzle memory like crazy. So may be SSD? And what would be the price?
