Canon 1D MarkIV

Next year might be a watershed year in large sensor camera choices. But its more important that you get your feature done in a time frame appropriate to you, so I hear you. You have to use the best choice available now. We're not getting any younger and some of us are getting older, FAST.

My circumstances may be a lot different to everyone else, I want to start shooting my feature early next year and it is going to be projected probably on 35mm and 2K so I don't want to be doing any nasty 24p conversions and have a lot of jello on the big screen. plus I'm self financing the film and hire prices are insane here you can buy stuff for what it costs to rent for 10 days.

It will probably be better than the 5D in many respects but won't be as good as the 5D2 when it comes to low light - due to the sensor size.

but the 1Ds' historically are lower megapixel counts. So the pixels are bigger. so it may hold up.

Regarding low light performance, Jannard on reduser really turned me on to the idea of usable ISO as apposed to native ISO. With 2 digic V processors and a new chip, we might be getting a combo that has a lower native ISO but is much more acceptable at higher ISO's.

Yeah that's the key determining a usable ISO/aperture range to achieve cine DOF. The only trouble is getting your hands on each DSLR and finding the time to test them.

I can afford $4K for a camera body (yes, I'm almost out of debt!), but as a filmmaker do you really want to pay that much for something that's still compromised as a video camera (no xlrs, slo-mo, bad form factor, no raw, etc)?
It's far smarter for me to pay $1600 for the 60D as a personal cam and use the rest to either rent or buy what really meets my needs sometime next year.

I was gonna say this exact same thing. After the long conversation in the GH-1 forum, Barry's got me re-considering what these things are worth in comparison to just owning one for small projects and renting larger for bigger projects.

I could justify the 4K expense with an HVX and all of that, but a crippled camera at 4K? Nah. The MKii with accessories was close to that, a little too close actually.

I could shoot it with the MKII if I had to and I'm sure it would look good but 24p will be a lot less hassle and the new models should be even better in low light.

we're thre weeks (and a few days) off of beginning principal photography on our feature. I was really rooting for a DSLR as B Cam, but at this rate I won't be choosing any of them and instead we're gonna pick up a second RED.

If you're talking about projecting something "epic" with action and all of that, have you considered taking all of the money you've spent on this whole still and video camera thing and instead renting a RED ONE? They're horribly cheap to rent, and you can probably find one (or buy a Nikon mount for one then sell it later) to rent for as much as you've paid for your camera.

A certain someone on this board was planning on shooting with a traditional adapter combo. They went to the DVXuser fest here and saw how the GH-1, Mkii and RED looked on Big SCreen and immediately changed their mind. They're going RED.

For an intimiate drama or standard comedy I would go with one of these things, but if you're talkin' Epic man or High Concept, I dunno.

it's an urban drama with a lot of nightclub scenes so low light capability is important. Not a lot of action just some skate scenes. I might mix it up with the red.

Well if you can get one for free for the feature that may be the way to go for something grande or Epic, since that's what you keep calling it. The money you save by selling off the camera, anyway, can be put toward the finer tihngs. But you don't need me to tell you that.

For small insert shots, plates (stills), or neat POV's it could be effective. We might use whatever's out by then for that sort of thing, but will shoot with two stripped down RED's.

Oh, you keep saying Epic. Epic to me sounds like Transformers or Australia. Nevermind.

The second feature is an epic but I need to do the first to raise enough money for the epic.

transformers epic? u been smokin that crack?

I'd still rather shoot it on a DSLR which is just gonna be easier in a submarine and on a remote mountain range in winter, but I expect DSLR's will be a lot closer to a red by the time I get round to shooting it.

How is Transformers NOT Epic? It takes place in several different massive locations and the scope of the movie is massive. Regardless of if anyone thinks it's a good movie or not, it's still classified as an Epic Feature Film, and it's shot like one as well.

I think he meant you would have to be on crack to think he would be directing something as epic like Transformers. Anyone who would attempt to make something like Transformers on an indie budget would have to be on crack!

Oh okay. I thought he was saying Transformers wasn't considered an Epic Feature. LoL.

P.S. I'm on crack if Dado's explanation is right. I'll try something like that on a tiny budget.

Hey, if you're a whiz bang special effects 3D artist, you could probably do a lot of it on a LOT of computers.

Problem is I don't think you can animate the way Megan Fox runs in those tight white jeans like she does.

I think we have a different interpretation of epic, when I think epic I think LOTR, star wars episode IV, Red Cliff. An action film with a script that an 8 year old might find interesting doesn't qualify as an epic to me no matter how much it cost to make. Maybe in 20 years transformers will be as well regarded as star wars but I doubt it.

LOL. There is no substitute for the real thing; especially in that case. But, I'll still try it!!!
