September Announcement
A solid source has confirmed the launch of a new 1D camera in September.

The camera will be available for purchase in October in a limited number. Stock should be in full swing by the time Vancouver 2010 rolls around.

The camera will remain APS-H. The source added “photojournalists and sports photographers alike have overwhelmingly thrown their support behind the APS-H sensor. If you want full frame for your landscape and portrait work, Canon provides a superb 5D Mark II and 1Ds Mark III”.

There you have it.

With a 1.3x crop factor we might have hit the sweet spot. Add 24p and a better codec. I'm sold. What do you guys think?

I think I already started a thread on this but yeah between this and the 60D hopefully there will be something with 24p

Actually that might be way off. I think the 1d MKiii 1.3x crop version was cheaper than 5,999.

So maybe... 3K? Or with a ton of video options priced at the same place as the MKii with the Full Frame sensor being what separates the two. Those who want the big stills will get an MKii, those who want lots of video functions the 1DMKiii? Then again, it could just be 30p again.

BOOOOO

I feel like the canon 1D would have a faster processor and chip then the 60D would ever have. Which would cut down on jello and leave room for a better codec. If we are really lucky it won't skip lines, but I'm not holding my breath for that one.

It will probably be better than the 5D in many respects but won't be as good as the 5D2 when it comes to low light - due to the sensor size.

That might be the way they sell it off to others. Which'll be fine to me, man. If it has f'ing 24p the lowlight won't make a difference. Having to crop 720 or stop down defeats the lowlight advantage anyway, might as well get it right without the hassle.

S'what HMI's are for.

It's not the price so much as the size and weight that bothers me. It's rumored to have 2 digic V processors so jello should be much improved. The 60D is rumored to have one digic V so while not as fast it's still faster than the MKII.

I just want a 60D with full manual controls and 24p, hell throw in 720 60p and they've got a real nice piece of kit there. I can't afford 3,000 bucks just for a camera body. Even if it has a bit of jello, I could deal with that, as long as it is not any worse than the amount of jello from the GH1 or 5DmkII.

If they both have 24p I'd probably get the 60D mainly because it's 1.6x crop is closer to cine DOF
The 1D is overkill for indie filmmaking but tell that to someone who owns a red

I can afford $4K for a camera body (yes, I'm almost out of debt!), but as a filmmaker do you really want to pay that much for something that's still compromised as a video camera (no xlrs, slo-mo, bad form factor, no raw, etc)?
It's far smarter for me to pay $1600 for the 60D as a personal cam and use the rest to either rent or buy what really meets my needs sometime next year.

Yeah, hopefully they'll give us the goods in both models. It's not like having 24p in the 60D is going to hurt the sales of the higher end stuff, unless they can't get 24p into the 5DmkII.

That's what I'm thinking, as I'll also need some lenses, extra batteries, etc. These things are upgraded every year anyways.

If that's what I have to pay for 24p and a lot less jello then well there isn't a choice if the 60D isn't all that. The other stuff you mentioned I can live without for now.

My circumstances may be a lot different to everyone else, I want to start shooting my feature early next year and it is going to be projected probably on 35mm and 2K so I don't want to be doing any nasty 24p conversions and have a lot of jello on the big screen. plus I'm self financing the film and hire prices are insane here you can buy stuff for what it costs to rent for 10 days.

Regarding low light performance, Jannard on reduser really turned me on to the idea of usable ISO as apposed to native ISO. With 2 digic V processors and a new chip, we might be getting a combo that has a lower native ISO but is much more acceptable at higher ISO's.
