I own two 5Ds and plan on buying a 7D shortly. I can tell you from experience that the 50/1.4 Canon lens is nice, but soft wide open. Also, the focus ring lacks hard stops, which makes it's use on FF rigs a problem. So I bought a Zeiss 50 and that solved that problem. Granted, it cost $750 but it's an awesome lens.
But I digress. The question is what lens or lenses to buy for a 7D, for $1100 or less. I've been looking at the bench tests at http://www.photozone.de. What a great resource. Go there and compare performance. The Canon 17-55/2.8 is pretty impressive; it beats all the off-brands hands down. It's sharp corner to corner, even wide open. One of the advantages of owning a Canon DSLR is that the lenses are so great. Don't forget that. So I'm leaning towards buying one for the 7D.
But for just $200 more, I can get a 35mm/1.4 L ... What a sweeeeeeet lens. Decisions, decisions.
