Ok, let's say you went out and did some test on your DVX camera where you played with different frame rates on the same tape. Ok, now let's say that that was a month ago but today when you decide to log the footage into your computer you realize that you didn't right down when in the tape you were changing frame rates. You know you used 30p and 24PA....but not when.

Ok,now. what do you do? How can you tell what is what? can you?

Not that I will do something like that, ah.

If you play it back with your DVX, you can toggle through the display modes and it'll show information like that on screen. I don't remember exactly what you do and I don't have my camera here right now, so you'll have to play around with it.
 
what about if you don't have the DVX with you? will another $300 camera do that too?

What program are you capturing with?


Premiere Pro will recognize the setting using 'scene detect.' I don't imagine that's the only program that can do this.
 
There's numereous ways to get the info you need. As Horsefilm said put the tape back in your DVX and toggle back and forth. If you don't have a dvx,I would try another panasonic cam.

Or as Kidwoo said you can use scene detect in Ppro.

I think those are your only options.

I have FCP. Have to do more looking. when I look in format, it gives me the speed I captured it, right? Have to do more looking.

use the pause and go frame by frame and watch the timecode. if it goes to 23 and back to 0= 24p. If you shot 24P advanced, every fourth frame will have interlace lines in the image.
 
No, everything on miniDV tape will go to 29 before going back to 0. You'll be able to tell the difference between 24p and 24pA by the pattern of combined frames. 24pA will be every 5th frame, while 24p will have 2 in a row followed by 3 whole frames.
 
what are you saying?

do you say capture the entire tape at 29.97fps and the take a look a the footage to find out? is that it?
I know I shot 30p and 24PA. mixed in one the tape.

Just curious to find other ways to tell

Bigboss is correct, MiniDV is always 29.97. That is why you extract the frames with the pull down in FCP.

ok, I finally had a chance to confirm some of the option you gave me and I found out that, playing back the tape on a $300 3CCD pana and on my DVX100A doesn't tell me what frame rate the footage is. On my DVX100a I made sure display was set to all and everything was on. Reads timecode, squezzed and other stuff but not frame rate.


I will imaging that this has happen to somebody else besides me, right? what did you do?

capture the footage and do the pulldown and see if your footage looks wacked. Then be careful.

No other way to know?

a tape have 3 or 4 sections...some at 30p some at 24PA...ahhh don't remmenber whitch one is what.

yep. there is no other way to know. I usually keep a paper log with my tapes. It has all that info on it, but I also try not to mix formats on tapes either.
