even for a wired mic? i figured for a wireless but didnt realize it needed it for a wired one

thanks!!!

You're trying to connect a mic that has a balanced, XLR, mic-level, XLR mono output connector to a camera with an unbalanced, mic-level stereo 1/8" TRS stereo input. If you simply have an XLR>1/8" TRS cable, it likely isn't properly configured. It should be wired to convert the XLR into two channels of unbalanced signal. What devices like the Beachtek do is to make that conversion, taking in balanced XLR signals and converting them to the dual-channel 1/8" input the camera needs. Passive boxes like the one linked above are okay, but don't do anything to overcome the 7D's less-than-stellar pre-amps. If you get an active device (powered) with pre-amps, it can send a stronger signal to the camera which means the camera's pre-amps have less work they need to do (which means less noise added).
