GH1 Can a dvx member compete against a hollywood film?

"you can watch it in a van,
you can watch it on the can,
you can watch it on a boat,
you can watch across the moat,
you can watch it in the rain,
you can watch it on a train,
you can watch it on a bus,
what's not to love, why the fuss?"

Thank you all your excellent input. I think at this point I may just have to take the plunge and get it out there. If anyone has any advice on how I can inhibit pirating, please let me know.

Has anyone heard of Yekra.com?

Allan, there is a crap load (meaning over a dozen) of the various online distribution platforms.

The distributor/streamer percentage of the cut isn't the most important factor, however. Even if you get $90% of the gross, it won't mean much if you don't sell many copies because no one has ever heard of the site. Vimeo is probably as a good an option as anyone else. You may even consider YouTube. Their cut is much bigger but they get a lot more visitors at the same time.

Otherwise, ask some of your industry contacts. Charles Papert was a DP on "Hell Baby", which mostly ended up on VOD (on Vimeo, IIRC). Chances are, however, is that you may have to do a lot of sales work yourself.

Even if you get your film on iTunes or Amazon you will end up doing most if not ALL of the marketing. Being on a site like that is all well and good but if your title does not show up on the fist few pages (usually alphabetical) they will not find you... which mean you have to get them to your site then you can use any of the dozen platforms. Just use the one that makes it easiest to buy your film, give you a good percentage and look good.

Yekra -looks good. I don't remember why I went with VHX over them... but (if I understand it) the affiliate program is a great way to have other people help spread the word.
Vimeo still forces you to make an account before you can watch a film.

That's some good advice guys. Thank you.
Regarding YouTube, I didn't know they had a VOD platform.

There's also Google Play.

FWIW, I just read a C-Net article on the "Interview" - yes, that email hack/scandal related "Interview" - being streamed at a bunch of sites, including You Tube and Google Play. The fee is apparently $6 for the rental and $15 for the outright purchase.

Keep those numbers in mind when deciding your fee.

That's great timing for my film, as I am gearing up to have it available on VOD as well as DVD. I've heard a number of people on the radio saying that they streamed "The interview", and they were middle aged types. This could be the kick in the pants that VOD needs, and it's awesome that it happened only weeks before my official release date.

After four days, “The Interview” ranks as Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing ($15M - DLD) online release of all time. It also outstrips recent VOD successes such as “Snowpiercer,” which earned $8.2 million on demand, as well as “Arbitrage” ($14 million) and “Bachelorette” ($8.2 million). Sony’s decision to provide numbers for “The Interview’s” VOD sales and rentals give rare insight into the home entertainment results of a major film release, figures that usually remain shrouded in secrecy.

Thanks for the link DLD. That is really encouraging as I am gearing up to release it on VOD as well. Also Happy New Year to everyone on DVXuser!!!

Happy New Year. Good luck with the distribution and sales. I'm envious you managed to get something out!
