Camtree FS700 Rig/Cage - the indian knockoff of the Movcam Rig

Yeah, that's the tough part. I'd rather have the 7Q attached to the camera itself too. With this set up, the 7Q is about 8 inches from my eyes. That's about the closest i'd want it. With the Edelkrone, or anything else that puts the 7Q on the actual camera or top handle, its getting too close for me. I could probably move the shoulder pad back, but i like having the camera at least half on my shoulder to take the weight off my arms some. I'll keep experimenting. A magic arm would work, i tried that out with my cheap one. I don't like how it might unscrew or get lose or hang weird. Could be just me though.

Might try the 7Q upside down, which would work much better with the Edelkrone. Good idea, Mitch

I hear ya, and see your gonna work the Eldekrone for a while. Looks promising. I went ahead and put in the order for all the same pieces you gave links for. So BIG THANKS for sharing. The only thing I did different is went with a magic arm with a shoe mount. I'll give it a whirl like that and make the call form there.

Hey Colin,

At first i had...
Westside AV Mount - http://www.westsideavstore.com/index.php?p=product&id=95
And a rod to cold shoe mount - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009A8K0JO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're both good, but probably not the idea way to put a monitor on a rig (not mounted to the actual camera).

Ended up going with the Edelkrone EVF/Monitor holder - https://www.edelkrone.com/us/p/115/monitor-holder

The edelkrone EVF holder btm shoe is in square size?
Thinking to get it and mount it with extension bar to make it more further away from lens/body to make the 7Q position to eye level.

Hey Alan, yeah that should work for the Edelkrone. It's just a square shoe mount on the bottom. The tightening bolt is pretty heavy duty too, so should be solid. Yep!

I just got one of these Camtree Hunt rigs - shipping and communication with the Ebay Camtree seller was fantastic - free Fedex international shipping to the UK in 2 days!!

The rig is definitely fairly cheaply made IMO - but hopefully should be good enough. little things like the rod tightening screws are fairly flimsy. Overall finish is OK but definately cheap compared to the other more expensive brands. One thing that's very poorly designed are the bolt holes for the top handle plate that attaches to the FS700. On mine, these are actually threaded rather than holes, so you end up with a thread to thread connection with the bolt going through. This means that the top handle plate doesn't tighten and sit flush with the top of the FS700 - all depends on the start of the thread where the bolt goes through it. Can't see why they designed it like that as it simply doesn't bolt on very well. A simple hole would have been perfect. I might drill out all 4 threads on the handle plate to make it fit better. Also, as it doesn't fit quite right, the side plate doesn't quite line up and the bolts wont tighten (without using excessive force).

On the whole, I think it's worth it for the money but it doesn't come near to the quality of the other more expensive rigs.

I find the edelkrone EVF holder is the perfect fit for me. I let it rest "at the bottom" as the weight of the 7Q is pretty big... but its still easy to adjust... don't have it stick out far, and for me its the perfect distance when going shoulder mounted.

I'm alsways worried about cold shoe mounting systems that carry a fair bit of weight - always seem a bit flimsy. You're obviously happy with yours though?

Where do you fix the cold shoe to? Is it on the front cold shoe of the Sony handle?

For what its worth - I thought i'd post my experiences of mounting the Camtree Hunt rig on a dovetail plate. I bought a Lanparte dovetail plate which is nicely made. It has a sprung release mechanism to prevent the rig sliding off and a fixing the other end:

It generally works OK with the Camtree although there is a slight issue that when you tighten the locking screw on the Camtree, it causes the Camtree baseplate to ride up the dovetail plate slightly on one side, very marginally tilting the whole rig. I'm pretty sure it won't be an issue but I think it shows another area where cheaper kit isn't as well-designed. I think the Camtree is still worth it as it's way less than half the price of the Movcam rig. Not sure if the Movcam rig is any better in this area either (or whether it's the Lanparte dovetail that's at fault).

It does allow a nice range of movement on the tripod though, which will make balancing easier and quicker, especially when changing out lenses and adding/removing my huge matte box!

Here's a couple of pics:

Hope that helps someone.

I find that when you attach the Edelkrone holder to the front hot shoe it gives in a bit and is not in a perfect 90 degree angle, have you noticed this?

Yeah i struggle with that. It might be because the shoe mount of the Edelkrone has rounded edges. Or the shoe mount in the camera is a tiny bit large. Either way, it does sag a bit. Got on my nerves so much i replaced the shoe mount with one that has a tiny screw in it. It's tighter, and the screw seems to hold it more secure. Still sags a little but, but it's better.

I had one laying around, not even sure from what. I can't seem to find a similar one on B&H or i'd link it.

I have a Camtree top handle i would actually use if i could figure out the best way to mount the Edelkrone to it.

Paul.

The movcam doesn't ride up although i've found lanparte and movcam dovetails slightly different sizes. The lanparte works but sometimes it's a bit of a fiddle. Could just be tolerances between batches though

cheers

Thanks Paul,

Do you mean the movcam baseplate doesn't ride up on the Lanparte dovetail plate? I presume you've tried that combination then?

Cheers.

Sorry i might not have been very clear. The movcam base plate does not ride up on either the lanparte dovetail or the movcam, but the lanparte is a little stiff at times.

cheers

It's probably a manufacture or tolerance thing then as you said. Probably the camtree not being 100% accurate! I find the camtree on the Lanparte dovetail slightly loose although not insecure by any means.
