Camera rumors for 2016?

From 43rumors.com on the GH5

And now we got a first spec info from a trusted source:
1) The camera has no crop for 4K
2) 4:2:2 10 bits internal recording!!!!

I had the last three GH's and the GH4 was really great but.......

ISO noise was really bad and I disliked the look over 800. Make the camera usable at 1600 and 3200 and I would be very happy.
The HDMI output lag is bad. Shooting interviews or talent lines on camera was a really problem. Producers would always wonder if I was having audio issues.

Those are the main reasons I sold off all my MFT cameras and lenses and moved to Sony. Am I interested in the GH5? Hell yes! I hope Panasonic fixes the issues and adds even more functionality but........ I don't think the noise issue or more sensitivity will happen due to the sensor size. It needs new tech but if Sony can do it with the mojo they have come up with I'm sure Panasonic can as well. Here is to hoping.
Video auto focus is a real thing now. Love face tracking for gimbal work. Would be great if the GH5 had a solid AF system like Canon and now Sony with the a6300.

Yes Eric, you are spot on. The problem with this space is that there is a hidden price ceiling that is related to consumer still camera buyers. We always want more than that ceiling. I wish the hybrid makers would make separate video-centric models so they could still benefit from economies of scale but offer deeper specs for the video crowd. If not then these things seem to always stay in the gray area.

This is one of those things that are decided by the MBA's rather than the MTech's. The spacing between models and the related features are carefully determined at the highest of corporate offices. Additionally, the photo-video industry is horribly muddled because of the relationships between the Japan based conglomerates. When they carve out they market pie, they show more than mere deference to each other. That is one of the reasons why the well funded independents like BMD and Red were able to get their foot in the door. Whether that door will continue to be open is another question because the Japanese have a tremendous economy of scale favoring them over the independents.

The most important thing for Panasonic to put into the GH5 is to beg, borrow or steal the color processing science from the pro dudes over at the other Panasonic building in Japan. GH4 had the worst colors, poorest skin tones of any camera I have ever owned, it always skewed Orange/Magenta no matter what you did with the color settings. If the GH5 had the same colors and feel as my HPX170 or any of the newer Panasonic small chip video cameras (270, etc.), I would be all over it. I concur with Eric about the noise too, the GH4 has horredous noise even at ISO 800. Fix the colors, fix the noise and they have a winner. I truly miss the colors from my old Panasonic cameras, they always looked superb. As much as I like my Canon colors, I think the Panasonic colors look even a little bit better.

I've always like Fuji's colors back in the day when i owned the S1pro & the S3pro. id say the best color of any N, C, P & S I've everowned although arguably equal to the canons. glad to see them making moves into the video space.

I just talked a good friend of mine who was ready to pull the trigger on the 5D MKIV into the Fuji XT2. She needs a hybrid stills/video cam, she too hates the colors we get from the GH4 and all of the Sonys. She has a lot of Canon glass but I showed her the clip above and some of the review videos on YouTube and she was sold and just ordered the XT2, handgrip and a couple of lenses last night. The XT2's film emulation modes are beautiful for someone who doesn't have the time or inclination to get into grading, the 4K looks pretty nice and she loves the fact that the XT2 is metal body and driven by dedicated knobs and switches instead of pages and pages of clunky menus like Canon, Sony and Panasonic. FWIW, based upon what I have seen, the XT2 gets the "Sleeper of the Year" award for a small and capable video tool. I may pick up one myself for gimbal and b-camera work or for travel where a small camera and lens would be much preferred over lugging a C300 MKII around.

For some reason, there is very little buzz around the XT2 while everyone in the world is ranting about how terrible the 5D MKIV is for video. So if the 5D MKIV is so terrible for video and the Sonys and Panasonic GH4 have bad colors, video noise, overheating, jello vision, why not try something new that doesn't seem to have any of those issues? I keep wanting to consider the A7 line or even the A6300 but the footage looks terrible and every review I read, the camera overheated and shut down. Already owned the GH4 and sold it because my clients HATED the look of the footage. Anything over ISO 800 looked like 800 ASA film with tons of grain and the skin tones always veer toward that weird Orange Cyan tint, yuck.

It's interesting because my clients prefer looking tan versus pale ;) But that's just me.

New rumor is that the new entry level Panasonic GXX (80 or 85 ... or something) camera will have 8-bit 4K 4:2:2 internal recording. GH5 will be teased.

And that Fuji will preview their medium format camera (with the same old 50 MPX Sony sensor that's inside Pentax and Hasseblad, presumably), with two primes and one zoom. It's also supposed to be priced in line with Pentax rather than Hasselblad.

PS. Nikon Rumors are reporting/rumoring that the Nikon DL line - compact 4K cameras similar to GX85 - may not be delivered until the Christmas shopping season. They were announced last spring, with the projected summer 2016 release. Then the Kumamoto quake happened, Sony sensor plant was closed and ... well, the DL is nowhere to be seen.

Speaking of discounted items - off the C500 mention - Olympus is offering their OMD1 with their 12-40 F/2.8 pro lens for $1,300. OMD1 MKII (or is it OMD2 MKI?) is about to be announced, so the OMD1 inventory needs to be cleared but, if someone is interested in the 4K OMD1 MKII, s/he can pick up the lens and the outgoing body.

12-40 F/2.8 itself goes for $900 retail. I recall Shane Hurlbut not liking it (compared to Cook primes, I suppose, he's got a point). The camera was going for around a grand too.

They've been offering the occasional one day sale on the EM1 for $799, which is a very good price if you want the (current) top of the line Olympus stills camera. But $1,300 for the camera and 12-40 f2.8 is an even better deal. Olympus is rumored to be announcing some f1.2 weather sealed primes in the near future, which will no doubt be very expensive.

Not a camera rumor but a lense announcement. Cooke is now offering its miniS4/i series of lenses for the pop'lar DSLR style cameras - in Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E and M43 mounts. DPR seems to be the first with the story, so there's more info.

Oh and just because they're made for the DSLR/mirrorless, it doesn't mean this is going to be cheap. Each lens runs $7,000 and the full ten lens set ten times more.

I need a CineAlta update...when are these cameras coming!?
I was counting on September/October - Sony officially said not to expect anything for the past NAB - but this may get pushed back due to the earthquake. I believe they're having a very difficult time catching up on their existing orders from Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus and Fuji. (which pretty much covers everyone who's anyone ... twice)

PS. On B&H, FS-5 is out of stock. Nikon DL series, promised for July, ain't even shipping yet. The Cine Alta line is a small production run but Sony must be more concerned with pumping out the top volume sellers. And had they been really concerned, they'd be dropping prices on F55 and F65 and they're not doing that either.

The FS5 and other Sony cameras have been backordered and then randomly in stock throughout the last few months. At one point, the FS5 had an expected availability of September in the middle of June and then I saw it back in stock in July. I don't know what's going on, but every decision I make moving forward in the near future is very much dependent on the CineAlta upgrade....please Sony!

XT2 is in stock at Adorama.

But, apparently, neither Olympus OMD1 MKII nor GH5 will ship in 2017.
