Camera rumors for 2016?

Canon has released the third quarter financials. It's hard to draw long term conclusions off it due to the lingering effects of the Kumamoto earthquake. FWIW, Sony claims that they're caught up with their output at this point.

This is from the analyst meeting. Canon sticks to their projection of 5.5M ILC units shipped for 2016. The compact system sales are calculated to be 4M units but, once again, it's hard to tell what part is due to the quake and what due to the compact systems disappearing off the face of the earth. Overall, it looks like the company will see its total units shipped number decrease from ~ 50 million c. 2012 to just under 10 million in 2016.

I've been hearing possible BK rumors about Nikon for about ten months from multiple sources. Not that it is related to the decline in the camera business but bone headed moves like boosting the cost on a workhorse pro lens like the new 70-200 2.8 VR by $800.00 while reversing the position of the zoom and focus rings is a huge blunder.

This is a Nikon Yahoo Finance page. The company has a $6B market cap, P/E of about 20. Several analysts have it as a "buy" (I assume due to a rather low, for this day and age, P/E)

They don't look to be heading for bankruptcy but they seem ripe for acquisition (by Samsung or a China based smartphone company).

Olympus EM1 MKII price in Japan has leaked out and it's quite hefty ¥245,000 or 62% more than EM1 was upon introduction. Should the ratio hold, it'll be MAP'd at ~ $2,100 in the US. The direct conversion is ~ $2,330 (¥/$ is just under 105 at the moment).

The GH5 feature set implies that GH5 would be priced even higher, which would run counter to the prevailing trends.

Technology is progressing, but demand is cratering. I can see these cameras just getting more and more expensive as less people need them, it's the same reason why video cameras are so insanely expensive.

The high end/pro cameras are expensive for various reasons (although, BMD and Red are surely pushing the overall prices way down and values way up). But, to get to the Faberge egg territory, that total production runs would have to become real small and I doubt the industry will ever get there in the consumer sector.

If the rumors are accurate, this is really the case of these two manufacturers making a bet that their cameras are so technologically advanced that the demand will be there even at much higher price points.

43 Rumours have a (non-scientific but quite useful) poll on whether its readers will go for EM1 MKII at $2,000+.

Only 13% responded "yes" thus far. I'd call it a cautionary tale.

Rumors are often wrong but it does seem that a Chinese or Korean company could acquire them as Nikon has lots of heritage, know-how and engineering acumen, I agree, they would be too desirable to just go BK and fade away. I've been a Nikon user for many decades, I hope they achieve success and are around a lot longer. But the opportunities they have failed to capitalize on kill me.

I wonder what the percentage would be for the GH5 though...probably more.
Likely but, at the moment, with 5426 votes cast, still only 13% say "yes" (73% say it's too expensive; the rest had no interest to begin with).

A6300 is $1,000. A6500 is $1,400. Both have (the same) APS-C sensor. $2,000 seems too high for an MFT product.

In any case, the Olympus EM1 MKII announcement is tomorrow. My guess is $1,750.

Ya, they took it down. What was the MAP?

FWIW, the announcement is supposed to be tomorrow in Spain - watch those famous Spanish geysers explode on Rohnfelder's orders - which will be early morning in the US.

FWIW, a long-time poster on some site claims that Sony's sniffing around Nikon. The person is an ex-Nikon "ambassador" and has been around a while. I don't see this as having a high chance of taking place, even if the gentleman is correct in his business assessment. Sony doesn't really need the F-mount in addition to E- and A-. I still say, this makes a lot more sense for Samsung or a Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

I usually have 20 tabs going in the morning catching up on life and never got to it, ha.

What's weird tho is I can't even find the camera on B&H right now.

I went through the comment section on 43Rumours. It looks like no one knows yet. The B&H page must not have had the price posted either.

There's a quote from a well-known photog with his own site and YouTube channel, ~ "Don't expect the image to improve much from EM1 but this camera is insanely fast".
