Camera industry in the 21st-digital-century... vs smartphone market's advent

I'm definitely interested in how Nikon responds to this. Look to Aptina to provide APS-C & FF sensors in the future? Is Nikon going to be owned by Sony in 5 years?
I don't think it makes sense for Sony to buy Nikon, as they've already got the old Minolta A-mount in a semi-dying mode.

As to sensors, according to the various rumor sites, Canon is reputedly testing the third party full frame sensors too. Considering that Sony business must come with major caveats, I wouldn't be surprised if these third parties are companies not named Sony such as Aptina, Omnivsion, STM, ON or whoever else. Chances are pretty high also that a lot of these outside vendors will try to co-develop a particular product that is outside of their main line of business, be it mobile, automotive, medical, surveillance or military.

Sounds like the BMD-Fairchild partnership to develop the Mini Ursa sensor.

Canon released their financials today and they ain't looking pretty. In fact, it may not be shocking for them to go fabless and just order sensors on demand from the large scale sensor manufacturers while sharing the research and development costs on specific projects.

Invisage just launched their first actual product: a 13 MPix quantum film sensor for smartphones with 1.1 um pixels that promises 1.5 stops better DR than competing products (and up to 3 stops if shooting in a special mode that uses the built-in highlight rolloff of quantum film).

Which is nice, but then add this piece from a few days ago which I just found and it instantly hyped me up: Emmanuel Lubezki joined the company as an artistic advisor.
