C500: C700 Production package

I'd actually like to see a C700 to C300 MKII comparison since, I believe, the share the same imager.

no, the sensor is new, but shares same architecture.... its been several times mentioned in several interviews / c700 presentations!

but i would love to see the direct comparison, both and more scientific and real life...

Someone will do this. It would seem that Canon would want to encourage this so as to illustrate the value proposition of the C700.

Thanks for sharing Anatusa. If I was in the market for this dollar level camera, seeing this test would easily convince me to buy an Amira. Every shot slow motion, not a very flattering grade, bleah color palette. Why would someone shoot with a 4K camera and then only post it in 1080? Would have been nice to see full screen what the 4K this camera can generate looks like. I think the C700 is capable of much more spectacular looks, this test was a dud. Good latitude and skin tones, but I've seen and shot lots of beach C300 MKII footage that blows this away.

They may not have Viimeo in 4K down under.

But, generally speaking, that makes me shake my head too. Cameras should be shown to the best of their abilities. Red has 8K clips already. Shoot the way the engineers intended it.

And no orange&teal LUT's, per favor. Those make every camera footage look cheesy.

not much of examples.... its the only new one i found, honestly i thought there will be much more examples by now. also i see clipping whites in that clip... so its seems like u have to be very careful with it like with the rest of the c line. I agree about arri , but i would get the mini.... locally we dont have that 4k "problem" yet and arri its what is most desirable locally..
Still would like to see more good examples of what c700 is capable of .

Yea, you could tell it's just compression...but I also don't expect much improvement in the cropped 2K/120p either.

what do you guys think of this demo video vs the vimeo one anatusa put up?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUa06BJtGyE&feature=youtu.be

This clip isn't much better. This one suffers from some of the same issues as the C700 clip although it looks sharper because they posted it in 4k at least. Lot of blown highlights and the colors and contrast, while better than the C700 sample on the previous page, are still a bit murky. I also think this camera is capable of much better. Why do all of these people HAVE to shoot slow motion on everything? I want to see 23.98 footage to see what the camera and motion signature actually look like. Seeing all of these videos slow motion videos is actually making me dislike high frame rate shooting, it's instantly cliche and boring looking. Slow motion is an effect so when everything is an effect, nothing is. Slow motion can be so good when it's used effectively but it seems like fewer and fewer camera ops these days understand how and when to use it.

Or how about this one with the Alexa Mini?

Sound design for the win! This one is at such a higher level. Good grade, the images look natural and pleasing. MUCH better exposure than either of the other two clips, I didn't see hardly any clipped highlights. Still too much slow motion and VFR for my taste. This looks like about 65% slow motion but at least they did some speed ramps and mixed it up with some regular motion. I don't think any of us would dispute it is doubtful that there are any better looking cameras available than the Arris overall. The Varicam LT and C700 can sing in the right hands, but they generally don't make images that are as orgnaically magical as the Arris, IMHO.

Cool. I didn't find any camera information mentioned in the video. The aerials are with inspire?
Here is a link to a blog and podcast on that shoot, as well as some photos below of the camera setup.

For the show in general, A-cam was Alexa Mini, two FS7s as B and C-cams, as well as A7s and A7r for some shots. Joe Simon was DP and A-cam op with the Alexa Mini and edited that trailer, so I assume all or most of the ground footage was Alexa Mini. Not sure what the aerial footage was with; it looks nice too.

Joe Simon used to do weddings and was among the best and most well-known wedding filmmakers. I've been a fan of his for awhile. Now he's taken over Philip Bloom's role of DPing The Wonder List after Bloom hurt his back.

i tend to agree with you that HFR is over-used, remember when the slider was introduced, suddenly everyone went crazy with slider shots, then it was followed by the drone/gimbal shots... there are some DPs who say the varicam can see more 'subtle' colors than Arri, but what the arri sensor can do with their colors, they do it well. The calling that was shot on the C700, i believe it was the codex that made it shine better than the internal codec; just my 2 cents. At the end of the day, story and proper lighting is what is more important... in the meantime here's some skin tone test for the varicam LT, looks pretty organic :)

My first impression is there must be something wrong in the processing or output. It ALL seems soft, especially the cropped slow mo. Complete loss of detail in the faces.
We've seen better out of this camera.

It even looks like they forgot to change the shutter speed when going to slow motion, and some of the clips have a lot of compression on them, all of a sudden. Doesn't seem like a detail oriented camera person shot and finished it.

edit: shot by an ACS member...

Thanks Eric! When you mentioned the Arri Mini being used, I was not sure whether it was humour/ rumour or fact from your side. :)

I felt the shots were cool. Didn't knew it was with Arri Mini. I know that earlier Philip Bloom used to shoot it and remember reading that he had pushed CNN to shoot in 4K even though they didn't want. So was not expecting to see the Arri Mini there.
