C300: C700 Event at Canon Hollywood Monday Nov. 7th

It was great to see a live, working version of the camera. A few takeaways...:
1) apparently it has a higher clean ISO than the C300 MK II (6400)....meaning 8000 is as clean as 6400 or maybe more....need more tests.
2) As I had mentioned before and confirmed by the guys on the shoot, the camera felt about 1/2 the weight of the ALEXA but built like a tank!
3) Menus....if you can run a C300, C300 MK II, you'll feel right at home with the C700.
4) VF is REALLY good...very sharp, great info layout and with my old man eyes, a fantastic diopter.
5) Remote is a must have, especially for an AC working with the Cam. Op.

How well do you suppose that viewfinder will meld with a C300 Mark II body? What are the attachment methods? Is it much larger than a Gratical? Can you control camera menus and functionality from the viewfinder?

Do you have to go into a seperate playback mode like on other C-series cams to playback different clips?

Have not seen it mounted on a Mark II but the guys said they used it on the Colorado shoot.....I meant to check out the BTS videos to see if I could spot it....not much bigger than the gratical but awesome......yes, it has all the functions available on the viewfinder....assuming the same for the MK II.....Over the next 2 weeks, I'll be around the camera a lot and will keep learning more and passing it on...

hey jim, is that a white version of the C700? lol... or perhaps is the light reflecting off the black finish :P seems like canon is taking a page out of red helium's playbook... anyway i am curious to know the power draw of the C700? i'd imagined it will be more power hungry given the extra hardware inside? the handle also looks more 'slim fitting' compare to the C300 ii... can the C700 handle be mounted onto the C300 ii body or are the screws aligned differently?

Speaking of the top handle, how much did Zacuto pay Canon again to make a cruddy design for a top handle? It's clear you can't adjust the forward and backward position of the top handle without unscrewing and screwing back in four screws, and no one is going to want to do that every time they change lenses or setups just so they can get a properly balanced top handle. Even worse if you're using an Easy Rig and then have to spend minutes on set re-positioning the handle for each lens weight or equipment change. So, back to third party top handles again.

Fortunately it looks like the Zacuto top handle I already have would be compatible with going on the C700. You wouldn't need to buy a helmet, just the Zacuto handle and a Z-bar. Pretty cheap fix compared to the price of the camera. But they still should have gotten this right.

_____________

Jim, looking at the connection piece to connect the viewfinder to the C700, which screws into the top of the camera, I suppose that could be screwed into the top of a C300 Mark II Zacuto helmet. Should work as long as it doesn't interfere with the Zacuto handle Z-bar placement too much. With the stock C300 Mark II top handle and helmet, there isn't any extra top screw hole real estate once the handle is attached, but it may work with the Zacuto helmet. Also would need to see where that would end up placing the position of the viewfinder.

Not that I'm really itching to spend $6,000 on a viewfinder for a $12,000 camera, but it is something to think about.

Yes, this was the 1 prototype that was not painted.....power draw?, didn't get that info yet other than it's running on that 12-14.4v system (Vmount or AB with adapter)...the handle is rock solid with mutiple screw holes to mount it where you want.....along with Eric's question, I don't know how it all mounts on the C300 MK II.

Yes, trying to be there most of the day.......look forward to meeting the man behind the mask!

Ha, ha. We briefly met at the C300 MKII rollout a year or two ago at Canon Hollywood. My avatar is a character from "Spirited Away" called No Face (カオナシ) so it all makes sense...
