C500: C500 + Odyssey7Q deal

I generally like to talk about feature set rather than price, but there's an interesting window of opportunity that has not been promoted and will quickly close so I thought I'd share.

Effective January 1, Canon has slashed the price of the C500 by about 1/3, to $19,999. They knocked down the price of the C100 as well, I believe to $4999 list. Of course some resellers discount from there.

There's been a promotion on the C500 that has been available for a few months, but I believe only in the US (please correct me if I'm wrong). If you buy a C500 and at the same time buy an approved onboard recorder, there is an instant rebate of $4000 ($3K to the camera, $1K to the recorder for accounting purposes). The list of approved recorders is fairly short, with the KiPro Quad, Codex S and the Odyssey7Q (plus a couple others).

Here's the kicker: the instant rebate promotion ends on January 4th. So anyone interested has just two days to take advantage of this little loophole.

Nothing against the others, but I'm going to insert a little plug here for the Odyssey7Q. The Odyssey is the smallest, lightest and least expensive option, and it's the only one with a built in monitor (a darn good one!). US list on the Odyssey7Q is $2295, with another $1495 for the Canon RAW recording option. Add an Odyssey Canon battery plate and it's still less than the $4K instant rebate, meaning that for the next two days if you buy a Canon C500 then Canon is effectively buying you an Odyssey7Q.

As Ron Burgundy might say, that's kinda a big deal.

Here's the math on the C500 + 7Q Rebates:

Canon C500 Camera Body $19999

Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q $2295

= $22294

C500 Instant Rebate - $3000

4K Recorder Rebate - $1000

$18294 After Canon Instant Rebates

ALL REBATES EXPIRE JANUARY 4 2014

0% Lease is Available on the C500 Body.

The 7Q can be added to the lease, but not at the 0% Promo Rate.

To be clear, Terry's numbers do not include the activation of the Canon RAW recording option on the Odyssey7Q, which one would want when pairing these two devices. This option is purchased directly from Convergent Design and is priced US$1495. As the C500 does not provide accessory power, one would likely also want a battery option for the Odyssey7Q. There are several, the least expensive being the CD-OD-CanonBPlate, which uses the same batteries as the C500. This plate can be purchased from Texas Media Systems or any of Convergent Design's other dealers. List price is US$75. You may also wish to consider purchasing some Odyssey SSDs.

announce and deliver are 2 different things. Canon 'announced' the firmware update for the C 300 at NAB last april and sort of 'delivered' it in november..
