C500: C500 New at $6,999 is it worth it?

Indiawilds, It looks like the C500 is no longer in production and once the retailers sell off the remaining stock that will be it for new C500 cameras. B&H I believe has the most stock of remaining C500 cameras, now they are pairing them with Lenses instead of the Odyssey Q7 (that Q7 package is discontinued) as well as buying just the C500 body alone. I always loved the look of the C300 and now at the price of the C300 (new) I have a C500 that does a whole lot more:
2K, 4K, and HFR up to 120, all this with just adding the external Odyssey Q7+. I'm very happy with my new tools!

The packages aren't discontinued yet, but probably will be very soon...you can still buy it alone or with the 7Q.

I see now that it's only the PL C500 that has been discontinued as a package deal, you can still get the C500 EF with the Odyssey 7Q (not the 7Q+)

I am after a used Canon C500 ef mount. Keen to hear your thoughts worth getting the with odyssey or save harder and get an fs7.. I have always like Canon's image.

Also how much media would i need I would be shooting 1080P for quick projects and 4k for cinematic pro res not raw...

Thanks
Thereis a Record Time Chart on our website so that you can judge how much memory you need based on the format, frame rate and how many minutes you plan to shoot.

Thank you Mitch, appreciate this. I am looking at pairing this with the 7Q seems a great little setup.

I still on the fence about the fs7, I have always loved Canon look. I have the c100 for 3 years now

i just checked the fresh prices and as its turned out :
- the price of c300 ii in Eu is 9450 Euro (+- 10350 usd),-
- the price of C500 is 6300 EUR + CD 7Q+ 1670 EUR + 900EUR raw bundle + battery plate for 7Q+ 350 EUR = 9220 EUR

(all prices are shown with out VAT)

As u see the price of C300 II and C500 + 7q+ are kind of same. i am not counting batteries and media as u need it with both setups , and its +- is same.
So if u dont use High Frames often ..... i would not even consider c500...
with c300 u get much lighter package ... i am not sure about the quality of its EVF , but as i understand its now oled and if its at least some how better then the one on c300 it should be great....

The C300 II is "ACES Qualified" which must mean something. It's a bit of a toss up, as the internal XF AFC, as an MPEG4 codec, is very good and efficient (and lighter footprint) vs the impratically large RAW .rmf files from the Odyssey.

Also the Dual Pixel expanded focus features are a big plus. The only thing is... the C300 II is back ordered.
Also, the C300 II has Clog 2 and Clog 3. This is significant.

If the prices are near each other in Europe, the C300 MKII is a better value, latest technology, codec options, little to no fan noise, etc.

The C500 is fully compatible with ACES, if that is important to you. The RMF workflow is described in this BTS of Canon's Rhythm of Life [go to 7:30 for the ACES discussion]:

Also, don't forget ProRes in the Odyssey! You can shoot 4K in all flavors of ProRes 422 (LT, HQ) if RAW is too large and it will do 2K ProRes 4444 as well.

I've never measured it but anectdotally, I find rolling shutter to be almost unnoticeable on my C100, except in specific circumstances. LA Metro is one I shoot a lot of trains for and when I shoot higher speed trains going by, I see it but it's not bad. And the C300 MKII is even improved over the C100 MKI/MKII/C300 MKI. But shooting handheld or walking around, I don't notice it at all.

According to Canon, rolling shutter performance has been cut in half on the C300 II (8ms vs. 16ms). Mind you, 16ms on the C300 is already very good and hardly noticeable.

Canon 1DC finally has the 'Closeout' tag @ Adorama...(the camera doesn't even show up if you search for it; had to find it via an accessories link...maybe a temporary bug.)

http://www.adorama.com/caeos1dc.html#Accessories (price is back up to $8K now but keeps changing back and forth from $4500)

It will be interesting to see what they do with the C500 in regards to anymore price drops.

If one takes out 1D C and C500, then Canon has kind of a spotty lineup under $10,000 - or, really under $12,000 - as neither 5D MKIV nor 1D XII is a videocentric performer.

Sony is (allegedly, according to Julian Assange) announcing FS-7 MKII in ten days. Canon can do worse. And has.

Well, this would be where a much needed C100 Mark III would come in with a bang.

With really awesome features that would surprise everyone.

Obviously 4K, but if they added 4K 60P, shoulder mount style something between the FS7 and C700, four combo AES/EBU and analog XLR inputs with AD conversion by Apogee, a better Canon version of the Zacuto Grip Relocater, built in-in Prores codecs and added genlock and TC in and out, getting rid of HDMI and replacing it all with only BNCs. Price it at $8k and watch it dominate the FS7 MKII.

Sounds good to me...and being able to output 4K out of the SDI...or maybe even RAW!

Convergent Design needs a new project...

And we need a Canon cinema camera that can easily shoot 4K/60P for less than $28,000!!!

(Getting way ahead of myself, ha.)
