C500 MKII Leaked on Canon Rumors

What was this thread about again?
Someone photoshopped an image of a fake C500 Mark II and posted it online with a list of made up specs, the information of course made its way to CanonRumors, and then DVXuser had a topic which involved cartels, NFL, TV show suggestions, career ambition, and aliens, only to be disappointed when it turned out Canon announced the Canon 100D instead which shoots 22.97 video.

I think I remember you telling that story in the Walmart car thread, which is actually where I first saw the car video, lol. (And I linked to it here in this thread a few posts down if you keep reading.)

And I know what you mean...but I think I'd be okay doing 100 small and simple $2000 projects. Or 50 $3000 ones. Simple, straightforward.

Haha. Oh I see now. I was trying to quickly catch up on this thread but didn't click on your link else I would have seen it. That's the version I meant to share, the extended cut. :)

Yeah I agree an abundant flow of $2000 projects can be a good thing. To me it comes down to time and resources used vs pay. As long as the pay is in line with your rates then ok. I was just throwing out a random number as an example. $2000 wouldn't allow much time and resources so it'd be a small-ish project. Then when the client wants to do a big project they call someone else because they only use you for the small stuff, thinking that's all you can do

Par for the course on dvxuser.com.

Lol. Quite a thread topic variety going on here.
At least my contribution to thread derailment did include Canon in some way, though unrelated to the OP, of course hahaha
We have shot for walmart a few years ago. At least back then walmart used in-house people for some of their in-house videos. I applied once. But for other things like events and some corporate they hire outsiders and lots of different ones. When you look at video production company websites around Walmart's home town, lots and lots of companies list walmart as a client. It's like everyone has shot for walmart, lol.

We also helped on some commercial shoots. A couple guys flew in from LA with a 5D and then hired local crew (like us) to help with the shoots. I was quite surprised walmart did it that way. And even more suprised the guys were using a little 5D! One time they rented a 7D from us for a shoot.
As to the big awesome commercials (which are rare) such as this:

I guess some agency sold them on the idea for that and used a big reputable company who had done previous larger scale projects. I don't know

I wonder about who does the work for Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, GM etc...

I was going to start another thread but since this one has already migrated to talking about work...
One thing that is a little frustrating to me is the scenario similar to an actor getting typecast.
Say a client hires you for a project. You go over ideas/scope/etc and they don't want to do anything big and impressive. So you end up doing a $2000 project or whatever, even though you could do a $200,000 project. The client from that point on sees you as the $2000 project guys and that is all you are capable for to them.
Worse yet if most of your clients are $2000 clients then you become known as the $2000 guys and all your recent work samples are the same scale. So you almost get stuck in a rut.
It's kind of like a guy buys a Chevrolet Sonic and decides that is the best they can make, even though they can make a Corvette ZR-1.

So many features on target and so many seem to miss the mark. Audio controls on the far side? 2K and HD HFR in cropped sensor only? Existing EF and no R Mount? So 44mm EF, 52 PL and 48mm B4 suitability. Shame no access to a lot of the later shorter flange back lenses. Ouch in today's market, $6K for the OLED VF is a decent bite in the wallet.

Probably big shot DPs from Los Angeles who have agents, etc., like Charles Pappert.

Exactly.

My better half is a Fashion Stylist, & Wardrobe Designer, whose done many jobs for Walmart, & just finished a 10 day project yesterday. Walmart shoots are the typical larger commercial productions that utilize high-end Directors, DPs, & crews. Often there are multiple Production Companies handling multiple projects simultaneously.

To be fair on canon I think the looks very good. Probably a bit pricey for me as I can do the attic for the same wad.

Seems like.. pretty much a swiss army knife
Strips down for solo use, AF, rear viewfinder stabilisation.
Strips down for gimbal use.
Builds up for cine use.

120 FPS is enough to handhold a 300 at a sports event.

Generally I think Canon AF is good and build is good compared to BM or Zcam.

Looking really good to me. This is the first Canon C-series camera with built-in image stabilization. Combined with Dual Pixel Auto Focus face tracking with touchscreen control and modular expansion, and I think it's a winner. The CF Express cards are a lot cheaper than I expected (512GB for around $600) which makes it much easier to deal with than the ridiculous CFast prices when they debuted.

I'm looking at this camera very closely now. 2020 might be a good year for my camera upgrade needs...

Apparently the built in stabilisation is digital so will soften and crop the image. Not true IBIS like in Panasonic or Olympus cameras. And having the audio controls on the bottom right hand side will be a nightmare for solo shooters. Also no RF mount. Disappointing as there's a lot to like otherwise

The audio controls on all of the canon cinema cameras have always been a nightmare for solo shooters. Having the audio controls on the camera base is probably better than what they already had.

Considering Canon’s history of lowering prices dramatically after the first 12-18 months, I’d wait on this even if I wanted one.

Ahh, can finally let out my breath as I have been under NDA about this camera for the past few weeks.

It really is an appealing package in a lot of ways. But I agree about the price point, the market has moved on from cameras in this price range in general.
I thought about it and this camera doesn't actually DO enough for me to consider selling off the C200 and upgrading to this. Not for the money. I dislike FF
in general. 6K is ultimately useless for my needs although the downsampling when shooting 4K and lower is appealing and does make a difference, the same
as when I was shooting with the C100 and C300, both of which downsampled a 4K sensor to 1080.

I am pleasantly surprised at the very reasonable costs of the CFexpress media, I too thought it would cost a fortune. I really like the modularity options, the
inexpensive EVF for those who need it, the V-mount adding two more audio channels, etc. Some pretty cool stuff. The electronic stabilization, I am very interested
to get a hold of a review unti to see exactly how well this works. Sure, it's not IBIS, but in the real world, can anyone tell the difference in image quality when
using it? Tha fact that it's designed to work with my IS and IS II lenses is exciting.

One thing I can't figure out, the air intakes on the dumb and operator sides of the camera are both labeled, "intake", so where is the exhaust? I think the user
interchangeable lens mounts are way overdue, but points to Canon for finally releasing it, all pro digital cinema cameras should be this way. As far as RF mount,
I really don't care. All RF lenses are fly by wire, which is horrendously bad for video shooting and personally I think the lenses are a bit overpriced. If I owned the
C500 MKII, I would buy the PL mount, use my EF lenses for most things and rent the best PL mount glass for higher end shoots, which for me only happen
a couple of times a year. I wish Canon made the locking EF mount standard from here on out on all of their cameras, who would want the standard EF mount
when they could have the locking EF mount?

I'm not sure if this camera will be a sales success as the market has radically changed and realistically, for me to buy this camera with the V mount back, PL mount is
putting me just short of $20k. For what I do, functionally, my clients wouldn't pay significantly more for a camera package with the C500 MKII versus my C200. I just
got two of them over the line to actually shoot 4K Cinema RAW Light so trying to sell them that they should be shooting 6K instead would be pointless.

I hope the camera is successful for Canon but I fear they are at too high of a price point. I'm convinced that the Cinema EOS division of Canon is much more about
corporate image than an actual proift center for the company, I personally think Canon should have proced this camera neck and neck with the FX9, which I think is
coming in around $12k from what I saw? At $12K, I would see a logical reason to spend more for this than half the cost for the C200. It is a very appealing package.
But I wouldn't personally spend more than three times what I paid for the C200 to have the features.

The comparisons between this camera and the BMD PCC 6K and S1H are ridiculous (not here so much, but elsewhere), they are prosumer mirrorless cameras and this is a pro digital cinema camera.
If people cannot differentiate between the two levels of camera, they should just be shooting with the mirrorless, which do seem to be pretty impressive for the money.

I will be getting a hold of a C500 MKII review unit, hopefully by the end of the year and I will report back with what it's like to shoot with one in the real world. I am currently shooting with the
BMD UMP G2, which is also an interesting camera, but frankly, it's not in the same league as the C500 MKII.
