Hi there,

This may be a rather silly question with an obvious answer, but wanted to see whether its fairly normal to see noise/grain when you use the magnify feature on the camera? I've noticed, even in fairly well lit conditions, that a fair amount of noise is seen when using the magnify button function. I'm assuming this is because the image is blown up x5 or x10, but not sure just how much noise is acceptable and how much is down to bad lighting/incorrect settings?

Yes, you will see increased noise as you magnify. Whether you are seeing too much, and need to adjust exposure, you'll have to judge for yourself.

One of the things I love is the ability to magnify the view on an external monitor, even over hdmi. It’s a great way to check your noise levels, and see the effects of in-camera noise reduction, sharpening etc. I’ve normally never used canon’s NR, but with this camera at its lowest settings for both spatial and temporal, it manages to take the edge off the noise and flickering, without any smearing or other artifacts (higher levels I’d avoid, something I’ll have more about later.. )
