C500: C500 ii Another 'jittery' issues

Hi all,

A little while back I posted about a problem I encountered with jittery/choppy footage after exporting footage from Resolve. The solution seemed to be turning off frame re-ordering in the delivery settings.

This time, however, I'm seeing the same issue straight out of the camera on the timeline itself. It's subtle, but noticeable to me.

I'm shooting at 25fps UHD, everything is very well lit. No pans or action involved. When the presenter moves his head back and forth or side to side, the jitteriness is noticeable. Is there an ideal shutter speed/angle I should be using (currently set at 180 degrees)? Is it possibly the lens trying to focus that's causing jitteriness (Its on face-only auto).

It just seems to me, for such a basic shot with very little action, I shouldn't be seeing this problem. Perhaps I should be shooting at a higher frame rate?

Shoot a test with AF on and then again with it off, and see if you can isolate the problem to the AF. A 180 degree shutter is what you want.

AF problem would make sense. Someone just sent me an interview from the A7RIII that was shot with AF and the entire frame is jumping with focus breathing as he moves his hands. Most noticeable at the edges of the frame. I applied stabilization on Tripod Mode in FCPX and it took care of it by cropping in slightly and adjusting the scaling to keep the frame constant.

AF in this case was totally unnecessary. If it had adjusted more smoothly and slowly, it probably would have been fine (or if the lens didn't breathe so incredibly much)

Can you post a short clip showing the problem? Is the whole frame “jittery” or just the persons head when it moves?

AF is not set right .. face priority probably not set .. so goes to hands.. focus zone probably set to wide and speed / response set to high /fast I'd bet .. Ive used A7 series for B cam for interviews many times .. never had that .. operator error ..

I use Face Priority AF in interviews on the C500 MKII all the time. Works like a dream. Until it doesn't...

Check your timeline settings match your camera settings. Also, check you are monitoring the full output from whatever NLE you are using. And no, don't shoot a higher frame rate.
