C500: C500 and The Atomos Shogun

How did I miss that? Looks good. Camera arrives tomorrow, sounds like the 7Q+ is the best long term solution. Hope for the summer sale to become the holiday sale!

Thank you Mitch!

Maybe if we can get a bunch of us to purchase a 7Q+, the CD team will work on 4K/60P ProRes for the C500.:love4:

That would be excellent but I am not sure that will even be possible with this generation of 7Q processor?

Chris I am in the same boat as you.

I have used the fs7 I like it but way prefer canon out of the box. Does the older shogun do the 4k raw to pro res I am sure they did with the new firmware. I don't need slow mo as I will mostly get a used a7s ii for run and gun and slow motion work.

What recorder are you looking at now?

Have you got your c500 yet?

Thanks

Hey Oliver,

My C500 arrived yesterday and I am excited! I think when stock runs out, this camera will hold value for a while, so it does not seem like a big risk and should pay for itself quickly.

I have been using my Canon 1Dc & C100. I have the AbleCine published EOSMatch profile for my C100 that was designed to match the 5DMarkII. I have downloaded the C500 variant and will install that... I have a lot of client's that don't do CC and I use this and a slightly modified standard 1Dc profile to deliver out of the box beauty for those clients. Canon gives you this and I think it's important. After using the FS7, I was not of fan of it's out of the box look... also the 180 fps is what I would consider "low quality".

The C500 is for my clients who ask for C-Log. It's also a stop gap for a while to see how other things pan out. There are some really beautiful usages of the C500 - Fathers and Daughter is one of many.

I think the Shogun Flame does the 4k.

I called Atomos USA and asked if the Inferno did RAW to DCI, UHD, or Both - they did not know, LOL and they have not answered my question on their FB page. As we can see on here, Mitch from CD is on the ball helping us understand their product and that's a good check in their box.

I don't need a recorder right away so I can wait a little, but I am on the 7Q+ side of the fence at this moment... It would gives me a lot more options and having all those options opens doors. I like that I can change the false color's colors on the 7Q+ and match what I am using on the Atomos. I still will use my Ninja Blade on my 1Dc as false colors are an integral part of my proper lighting and exposure choices and having the false colors match will simplify life.

Hope that helps!

The original Shogun is listed as having support for C500 RAW recording as well.

But I honestly don't think anyone in the world has actually used an Atomos product with the C500 to record RAW...it's so confusing and the tech support there is useless.

I have been really itching to try the C500...and with that said...I went ahead and rented it with an Inferno to get to the bottom of what the heck is actually possible with this combination and how it all works and looks.

When are you renting? I'm looking forward to hearing you thoughts. I agree with you, I don't think anyone even Atomos has actually paired their units with a C500, LOL. I am kidding, but it's hard to find info on it.

I will have it Friday, but will go out and shoot some footage over the weekend.

(P.S. Nothing against the 7Q+ as I would probably get it if I owned the camera, but I have so many Extreme Pros from a BMCC/BMPC that I'm hoping to use, and was just generally curious about how an Atomos recorder, preferably the flagship, works with the C500.)

It will be interesting to hear feedback on the C500's fan noise. When it records 4K out to a recorder, the CPUs must work overtime to process the data resulting in the fans kicking in. Apparently they made a fix to the fan control with the firmware upgrade, but reports are that it's still quite noisy.
As well the C500 lacks CLOG2, so no matter what, it's limited to 12 stops in CLOG.
It also has no dual pixel autofocus features like the C300 II. I'm on the fence about just waiting for C300 II to come down in price, but that might take another year or two.

If I like the C500, I'm hoping Canon will drop the price one more time to less than $5K to move their final units out there, but not sure that would happen.

My dream is for someone to take this 4K/60p RAW signal and convert it to 4K/60p ProRes (even bursts would be lovely), but there's probably a better chance of another price drop happening than that.

It seems as if only BH has EF C500s so stock is likely low enough that it won't drop again.

The C500's 4K fan noise is audible but it turns off when you press record. At least, that's what it does on mine going out 4K RAW to the Odyssey. The firmware on the camera is 1.06.01, which is not even the newest one.

Apparently, if you record long enough in one take, the fan comes back on, but I haven't had that happen yet.

Here is some info on the firmware updates for the C500:

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/...s/cameras-and-lenses/cinema-eos-firmware/c500

The only thing I would like to see added on the Odyssey is support for the 120P 4096 x 1080 crop mode, which is separate from the 4K 120P HRAW.

If we are all being honest. If you can't get a great image out of 12 stops DR, than the DR is likely not the problem.

B&H has most of the stock (brand new) that currently exists in the USA...but if they don't sell them, what will happen to them?

They will end up like the Atari ET video game . . . just kidding. I think they will sell out on the EF version for sure. Canon determines the price, not B&H. I would imagine the C300 is next in line for any additional discounts and not the C500 or even the C300 II.

I really enjoyed the Atari 2600 ET game as a kid... but I grew up in Silicon Valley and a friends dad was a VP of Atari at the time. We literally had testers of games floating around our neighborhood from Activision, Atari, and others... just the inners no plastic over... it was a cool time to be a kid. If you knew the order of how you needed to do things to get ET's space ship to come and take him away, it was cool. One cool trick with Space Invaders was if you put the cartridge in and you held down the reset button and turned the unit on and off 2 times you would get a double fire shot... meaning every time you pushed the fire button 2 bullets flew out rather than 1. It made the game much easier and flipping it was simple. The PL version may get lowered, but I doubt they made as many... only Canon knows. FYI, Pitfall II for the Atari 2600 is one of my favorite games of all time! Still have an NIB plastic wrapped Pitfall II on my office wall.

I like the random comment about the C500 within the game talk, lol.

I miss Sega and Sonic.

Canon footage often has a 1980s film look (slightly over-saturated and punchy), so maybe there is a connection to what we remember from that period. It triggers something on a subconscious level.

As for the Atari 2600, that was my favorite console of all time. Nothing ever came close to that.
