C300: C300MKII Field Monitor 4K?

Besides devices like the Oddyssey 7Q+ or Atomos Shogun.. Looking for ways to set up a field (client) monitor that can display the 4K image... the Camera only seems to output a 4K RAW image, which isn't accepted by all monitors besides the previously mentioned or Canon specific $17000 monitor.... the only solution I've found is to output the 2K/1080 picture to the monitor... but the point of shooting 4K is to be able to view it in all the 4K glory... unfortunately I don't see a way to send out via HDMI or SDI the 4K signal WITHOUT the RAW option... hopefully I'm missing something and it's a menu item i'm overlooking. Thoughts on Monitors or a way to have a 4K Client monitor feed work... I've got a 4K monitor... just doesn't seem to be accepting the image.

Thanks,
Brandon

How large of a monitor were you thinking of? There's literally no reason to run full 4K resolution on "field monitor" sizes of 5-7". Even 10" 4K is going to be silly.

There's just no reason for pixel density that high. I mean, a 10" iPad Retina is 2048x1537 and you have to smash it against your face to see pixels.

The Odyssey 7Q is 1280x800

The Atomos Shogun is 1920x1200

Pretty sure they don't make much in the 4K monitor world until you get to 30"+ panels. Except for computer monitors.

Lets say the Delvcam DELV-4KSDI28 ... the problem i think is that the camera is putting out the RAW signal and needs to be debayered.... the monitor, unless accepting raw signal, doesnt do it and therefore doesnt know how to process the signal... just a thought tho... like i said... its for a larger client monitor, it can be a 4k Samsung for all i care... it just needs to be able to show the image.

It's much easier to just run it into the aforementioned Shogun or Q7+, since the pixel density on those screens will be greater than 4K on a desktop monitor anyway.

Otherwise, you're probably looking at a high end laptop with a 4K screen, running a live editing/color grading suit that can apply LUT's in real time. It's basically a studio-on-the-go and can get rather pricey.

The idea is to ultimately be able to get a standard 4K video feed via SDI or HDMI... The Shogun/Oddyssey are not the final viewing/client screen.. So the debate asks how there is a way to get that non-raw 4K video to a larger 4K screen live... I dont think the camera outputs it, nor does the Shogun convert it

Which monitor are you attempting to use?
What frame rate?
What recording mode?
Which connections?

The way I've done it in the past is I've run the single RAW HDSDI into an AJA KiPro Quad and then used the 4 HDSDI outputs of the KiProQuad to any standard 4K production monitor that is setup to accept a quad link signal.

An important note is that you can't playback media from the camera in 4K, as once it's encoded onto the card, there is no more "4K RAW" to output. So you've got to also be recording to the AJA if you want 4K image review.

Canon's idea of piping RAW to the monitor is an interesting idea, but ultimately it's just that. I really don't think that will get traction beyond Canon's own ecosystem.

There was talk by some Canon reps of outputting 4K over HDMI, between NAB 2015 & release of camera. The HDMI plug is spec'ed as 4K capable. However, that hasn't happened. Not sure if Canon is planning a firmware upgrade? Now that Panasonic has also added a camera to the mix of 4K capable cameras available without a (good) 4K baseband video output, there should be some opportunity for Atomos & Convergent Design. As is mentioned by Macaholic the AJA KiPro Quad is capable of this now. But I don't see that AJA device getting a lot of traction these days.

Besides that I really don't see a big need for 4K on-set monitoring, technically speaking, but as we all know the monitor's most important function is as a client retention device...
