C300: C300III essentials

The Zacuto loupe certainly seems like an appealing option. Canon's EVF is very good, but once you're used to the EVF+monitor combo from the Arri Mini/Amira, it's really irritating not having both options always available. With the Loupe, you at least having the option to flip it up and monitor from the monitor when necessary.

That's one of the reasons why I like using the Z-Finder loupe. I operate with that and then when I want to pull away from it I can monitor onboard with my SmallHD 5" Focus OLED monitor on my camera since the Z-Finder + LED combo runs from Canon's proprietary video cable and doesn't take up the SDI/HDMI out from the camera I can run them both at the same time. Plus you can always flip up the Z-Finder if you want to use the touch focus.

I was thinking of the loupe more as a means to do away with even having an additional monitor onboard (assuming your AC is pulling focus wirelessly) since it gives you an EVF + monitor in a single piece. Arri's new EVF on the MILF is the best version of this that anyone makes (and frankly EVERY other manufacturer should take note of it).

Well the arri mvf-2 actually has 2 displays - a flip-out monitor and an EVF, no? Isn't that sort of cheating to compare it? But yeah that's a great design

Yep, that’s my point. The utility of having the two combined is huge. Using a loupe system (instead of just an EVF), does give you some of that dual-functionality. Certainly not to the same extent, but it does give you some of it, and that’s pretty helpful (I assume, I haven’t actually used it myself).

Hi all,

This is my first post since (drum roll please) September 2006. Since then I've been through twenty cameras (including most of the C line) before arriving at the C300mkIII. I sometimes pop in here to see what's happening, fly on the wall, but this thread has finally prompted me to jump back in as I think I can help.

I've bought the Zucato C500mkII Z Finder (plus Zucato Axis mini, top plate and Recoil handle). I took a bit of a stab on the Z finder over the EVF50 and I'm pleased I did. I have a C200 (which I believe basically has an EVF50 built in) and the C500mkII/C300mkIII lcd plus Z finder provides a much more immersive experience. The image is large and clear. A little pixilated, but more detailed than the C200 EVF. I've set the function button to false colour so I have that right next to my eye. The Axis mini is great too as it's rock solid and I can get the lcd/evf exactly where I want it.

I have 7" and 5" smallHD monitors so I can mount either of these at the rear of the camera to use as my LCD (I never really use the touch functionality of Canon focussing so that's no big loss to me, and you can raise the loop if needed).

The other accessories I have picked up are the Shape remote extension handle with cable (loving it - gets the handle exactly where I want it) and I'm planning to order the shape VCT shoulder mount for C500mkII/C300mkIII and probably a left handle.

The other consideration is V mount, which I've always avoided previously, but I'm finding this camera really chews through BPA60s (the 30s are almost useless). This is the one area I miss of the C200.

Okay that's all for now. See you guys in 2034. And one ps - when I do pass through as a voyeur I always appreciate reading Eric's posts, so shout out to him. Some have me laughing out loud, and I despair and the humourless downvotes. The world needs more laughter :-)

All good stuff here, thanks for posting! I'm in very much the same boat as you and have landed in a very similar spot.

I too have avoided V-Mounts until now (#GoldMountOrDie), but I will say that putting this on my C300MKIII has been great so far & I would recommend it: https://fullframecamera.co/store/V-Mount-Plate-for-Canon-C500-MkII-C300-MkIII-p179115779

I have that mounted to my cam and also picked up two of these guys and they last a long time (haven't clocked them yet for real world times): https://www.intellytechusa.com/products/pocket-v-155wh-v-mount-battery-1

I also recommend the Full Frame Camera Co.’s V-Mount plate. I think Texas Media Systems now carries them in the USA - if anyone is looking for a source stateside. I had already ordered from them directly before I found this out but shipping was fast enough (4 business days I think) so it was kind of a non-issue for me but if you’re in a time-crunch it may help.

Thanks guys, I've decided to go ahead and order the Full Frame Camera Co's V-Mount Plate on your recommendations.

I'm looking forward to being able to power the SmallHD monitors from the same batteries.
