C300: C300 mkiii?

It looks like Japanese stills cameras will like to use them inside the cameras to have 10-bit high resolutions and framerates.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought that HEVC was intended more as a distribution codec than acquisition, anyway.

Considering that MPEG-4/H.264 was both, HEVC - which is, generally, not greatly conceptually different from H.264, just needs more computational power - was/is capable of being both too. It's just that YouTube/Google had developed its own codec in VP-9 as an alternative, while Netflix waited for HEVC a bit longer but now uses all three of them - H.264, HEVC and VP-9 (free license from Google).

Yep. My Mavic 2 Pro has HEVC and when I've played it back on my laptop, it sounds like my drone. Lol

I dunno, I feel like Canon is going to throw a bone to broadcast/corp peeps and provide a non-raw super 35mm option for those that don't want it (and don't want to pay for it) and keep the C200 & C500MKII as your options for "cinema" (C200 entry level raw, C500 'serious' full frame cinema shooters). This would also prevent either cameras from being cannibalized by the new C300MKII.

I don't know any current C300MKII users that would want or shoot in raw.

Interesting take Chris. I don't know, just instinctually, I would be surprised if Canon let a lower end product (C200) have higher end recording (CRL) than much more expensive product didn't have? That doesn't feel like how Canon usually rolls to me.
I agree with DLD below, S35 6K CRL with the mid range XF-AVC codec, make the extra money for the C500 MKII be the ability to switch backs, dual CFExpress, maybe the internal stabilization features? RF lens mount, I don't know, I am
on the fence about if they will roll that out. Possibly? I agree with you about current C300 MKII owners not caring about RAW but think about competition, Canon would be wise to include CRL precisely because the FX9 doesn't have it. RAW on the FX9
will be a convoluted, expensive, large mess IMHO, while putting it into the C300 MKII would be childs play for Canon.

So, to hedge my bet and to go along with what Andree posted in the R5 thread on the industry forum - Canon is not tooting either HEVC or 10-bit. In the released pieces, they tout 8K, the functioning DPAF and no crop. They do mention that other specs aren't final and still being worked on.

But 8-bit in 2020? Too self-crippling, IMO.

Some rumors about R6 began to be brought up in usual places. The specs are kind of confusing - 20 MPX, 4K 60p, but lower quality build and the EVF. So, some specs have it below EOS R and even RP, some above R. Or it could be a videocentric version, similar to A7III, Z6 and S1. Or a hodgepodge of things.

Well, according to Wooden Camera, the C500mkiii is already out. Got an email from them announcing aks for the C500mkiii, haha.

Hmmmm.... really hope this 4K is coming off the c700’s 4.5K sensor so there’s some oversampling and resolving/sharpness improvements over the C300MKII.

It is Canon, but would they really refresh a 5 year old camera with no increased image quality? I hope they’re not tone deaf enough to think that C300 users are clamoring for a raw codec to scratch that itch.

I think the only way this camera has legs is if they announce a 2.8 version of the 18-80 servo lens along side it. Maybe then with the ease of use and ergonomics improvements people would be “clam”mering to ditch their old C300 bodies and have a single lens set up that meets 85% of their needs for doc/eng?

I wouldn't put money on that bet. A 2.8 will be huge and expensive though and with a full frame camera as flagship the market for this lens has become even smaller.

For me it would make sense to put the C200 to end of life and merge the C300II and the C200. Raw lite + XAVC 4k120p, off course new sensor with oversampled sharper image. With a price point under the FX9 sales market would be all C200 and C300 owners plus FS7, EVA1 etc. But I said "for me" and I am the one who never understood the C300II C200 C500 C700 product variety based on crippling products.

Maybe they could figure out how to rehouse the 17-55 2.8 and fix the vignetting that shows up on the C200 in raw mode?
