C300: C300 mkiii SDI / HDMI issue

Hi,
When shooting 4K C300mkiii doesn't let the SDI MON out and the HDMI work at the same time. The SDI out and HDMI work at the same time BUT the SDI doesn't downconvert the 4K signal (MON out does down convert to HD) so if I'm using a Zacuto viewfinder and a Teradek ACE at the same time, I'm screwed. The viewfinder won't take 4K signal and I obviously can't use SDI Mon out and HDMI out at the same time. This was never a problem on the C300 MKii.

Does anyone have a good work around?!

Thanks.

If they don't eventually fix this known problem, you'll have to loop out of hardware that can accept 4K but only output HD (like a 5" HD Video Assist) or more advanced options which may provide you signal settings.

With any options you find it's best to research what kind of delay there may or may not be with your particular set up.

These UpDownCross won't handle your 4K but if you need extra SDI and HDMI at the same time you can use these. Good little Swiss army knife. If you don't need to 'convert' a signal you can just use them as an SDI/HDMI distributor if you set switch #1 to OFF. I power mine from D Tap.

This might be a decent workaround for now… where do you get the d tap power adapter? Thanks!!!

I'm running V Loc batteries along with a 4 port V Loc distributor so no problems there. If you require just one extra SDI out you could use one of these maybe. It's a 1 x 2 passive splitter from Apantac. These require no additional powering and are good for about 30-yard cable runs. Which obviously shouldn't be much of an issue if you are mounting this on your camera somewhere. I've used a similar unit attaching it to the camera with Velcro.

Oh I meant where do you get the d tap power cord to that BM box? I have plenty d tap outputs from battery plate.

I'm running into the same problem every time I have to set a remote interview or a simple wire to village. It's very frustrating! So far I have been looping through my monitor (SmallHD 702) but it's adding a fair amount of latency... @cyvideo does the BM Mini Converter add any latency?

To the best of my knowledge on the info I have from BM is that if you have dip switch #1 in the ON position as you would if doing a "conversion" from one standard to another there is a 1 frame delay due to the conversion processing regardless of what frame size or the number of FPS you select for your output conversion. If you are running UpDownCross with dip #1 in the off position you are basically using it as a video distributor and no processing is going on. The output format will be the same as the input so the SDI is straight through with no delay. Also, remember there is an SDI "loop through" port. So even if you are doing a process on conversion through to the output ports the loop through will not be affected by that one frame processing delay. If you are using the HDMI output and are inputting SDI without any format conversion then there is apparently a 1 line insertion delay. Which is really of no significance in the real world of production. As I say this is to the best of my knowledge and so far my experience is bearing that out.

Canon just announced an FW update to clear up this issue in both the C500M2 & the C300M3:

Thanks Jon, good to know.

Seeing some of the builds in the video reminded me of the canon expansion units. I almost forgot they were an accessory - most people seem happy without them.
