C300: C300 MKII projects?

Hi all

I'm strongly considering a move to the C300 MKII from my C100 this fall and I've been digging around the internet trying to find top-notch project samples shot on it. Other than a handful of videos that keep showing up there aren't a ton I can find, and most of them aren't that impressive. I don't think that speaks to the potential of the camera, they're largely boring demo videos that don't show off its cinematic capabilities.

Maybe this could become a running thread of the best C300 MKII films floating around the net.

To kick things off here are a few I found on Vimeo that show off the C300's potential better than others (IMO):

Thanks guys!

Just my two cents, but in my shop I would say about 90%+ of the people who start off considering the Canon C300 Mk II end up going with a Varicam LT.

When you do the side by side and with the incentives of 0% financing, LT ends up on paper and on the screen a far better value. Feel free to send me a PM if you want me to share the side by side spec comparison one of my customers did.

All the best,

As a long time Canon C300 user I suspect the Varicam LT is actually a much better camera. The C300 MkII is an incremental update. No reason to update unless clients demand 4k, which mine are not.

Illya: is the Varicam LT actually shipping?

I ordered a Varicam LT yesterday from the UK. They seem to be in stock over there at least, I don't know about the US though.

All the best,

Have you (or anyone else posting here) used both cameras? The image coming out of the LT is indeed beautiful, I would say more filmic/cinematic than the C300. That said I really love the form factor of the C series camera, I enjoy mostly handheld work. It weighs a lot less as far as I can tell, and the battery life is miles better than the LT. Also as far as I know c-fast media is noticeably cheaper than Panasonics proprietary stuff.

I've read some reviews online and people mentioned cons that, for me, would be a bit problematic: fairly long booting times, needing to reboot to change frame rates, etc.

Have you heard people mention one way or another if these things were issues for them?

IMO, unless one needs auto focus, and a lot of run-n-gun and event shooters do, FS-7 is a slightly better buy with the respective prices standing $4,000 apart. At the current retail levels, Red Raven delivers the most beautiful image for the buck but it needs light. LT combines an excellent image and the capability to work at much higher ISO but is heftier to lug around with the shooting package at the higher end of this market niche.

As to funky videos with the chocolate smeared over people's faces, I wouldn't pay much attention to it. If lit cleverly and exposed properly, one can get cinematic images with much less expensive cameras than any of the above.

Those are fair points. I almost pulled the trigger on an FS7 a few months ago. I'm still considering it, although it's heavy enough and its form factor is such that it kind of demands that you shoot ENG style, or handheld for short bursts. I've become really accustomed to the C-series handheld style of shooting and I think my best work comes with having that sort of freedom. The colour issue has been discussed ad nauseum but needless to say I much prefer the Canon look. All of that said I'm based in Toronto and no question people use FS7 much more often than C300 now.

Not sure if this footage will help you with your decision but here's some C300 MKII footage shot in C-Log 2 w/ Canon CN-E zooms:
Sorry for the commercial ahead of the video.

Thanks for sharing this Bill, it looks good! It looks like high exposure environments are handled pretty well. How do you find the quality of highlight roll off with the C300 MKII?

Here is a doc style project I did with the C300 Mark II.

I've done a few narrative projects with it. The Star Wars one below was a mix of cameras (C300 Mark II, C300 Mark I, and A7s II), and the other two were all C300 Mark II (mostly with the Canon 15.5-47 T/2.8 lens), but aren't publicly online yet.

And a video I did of Tampa with the C300 Mark II.

The sky was exposed at 80% so there's essentially nothing clipping or rolling off, unless you catch a glint of chrome or something.
I just had a shoot with the C300MKII and Amira side by side and they're still not very close in my opinion.

Where do they differ the most, with respect to image, in your opinion?

Thanks for sharing these Eric, I've seen your work floating around the net :) Great doc piece! Just to pick up on what I was asking Bill about highlight roll off, I noticed exterior shots with sky in the frame and also shots with windows don't seem to be super forgiving with dynamic range on the highlight end. Is that the case in general, or was that more the profile you were using/how you decided to grade the image?

Here's a couple of projects I've shot recently with my Mark II, both in 4K (with a little upscaled 1080p 60p) and both shot in Clog 2/Cinema Gamut/Production Matrix. Don't have any experience shooting side by side with Amira/Alexa, but have been very impressed with the DR, colour and how well it grades. The latest update has really cleaned up the noise in Clog 2 as well. Hope these help your decision OP!

i would like to hear some thoughts on the new C-log3... and since log2 has been cleaned up in firmware, is it considered the best log to match with other cameras like arri/red? i also wouldn't mind seeing a shootout between C300 ii vs Varicam LT vs SonyFS7+XDCA raw module...

also can someone confirm that the sdi out of the C300 ii is a raw signal? if its a raw signal, can the 7Q or other external recorder be used to record canon raw?

We shot CLog3 last week and the results were very pleasing -
super easy to grade outside of Resolve & in Pr
Clean Blacks-
Beautiful skin tones-
Our go to Log curve
Client loved it.
used the camera monitoring LUT and on that waveform never let any whites exceed 92
the actual waveform normaled around 62
allowed a few hi-con shots to clip - all good
shooting in 4K with CLog3 is sweet
