C300: C300 Mk III Coming Soon

If Canon can force themselves to put a decent codec and colorspace (10bit) in the C100 MKIII I think they would have finally got it right. The viewfinder improved in version II and 60p showed up. If they can add solid 120p along with 4k in the new version there will not be much left to improve upon. But I always will wait and see with Canon as they are really good at leaving features out :)

Lol has anyone actually shot with the c300 mkii? Or are all you nerds just geeking over specs?

Sounds like you you have not been reading the thread. The speculation is about the next gen of the C100. Us nerds are geeking out over that....not the c300 II....which is already known and a solid camera in its own right.

but continous 120p...not the butchered 8 sec burst....That would make it perfect for me...I would buy two of them and not even bother checking into CR for another 3 or 4 years....

If it's that high then I'm out. A friend /colleague was pointing out that they don't have anything to compete with the FS5. When I mentioned the C300m2, he said "that competes with the FS7 (although way to high a price compared to it, in relation to offered features)", so I would think the the C100m3 would be the FS5 competitor, hopefully similarly priced. Maybe I'm crazy/wrong. Anyway, guess we'll know in a few months.

Canon doesn't have a camera that competes with the FS7. The C300mk2 was made to compete with the Sony F5. The C500 for the Sony F55.

And yet the FS7 competes very favourably to the C300ii for much less cost. Most of the C300i owners I know bought an FS7 not a C300ii.

I was paraphrasing my colleague when I said that. I suspect he meant features-wise, not price wise, though apparently the FS7 wins in both categories.

And really that is what will dictate....it is the numbers game.....smaller version of what happened with Windows/Apple.....most early adopters said the Mac was a far better product but Windows PCs wiped them saleswise...

I understood you, and the only feature the Fs7 beats the C300mk2 is in high frame rates. The rest goes in favor the the canon.

Definitely not only that.

Also I wouldn't call 50/60fps as a "high frame rate". It becomes standard frame rate for many things that land on web. And because of that you cannot shoot with it in 4K thus it's not fully a 4K camera. For this single reason (lack of 4K60fps) I went for FS7. Of course price was a factor as well but if only Canon decided to go for 4K60fps together with that fantastic dual pixel AF it would make it much harder choice. Real bummer as I almost was sure that c300II will be my next.

Nobody said 50/60fps is a high framerate. The C300mk2 can do 120fps but only in crop mode/hd, wheres the Fs7 can do that+ without cropping, hence my statement of the Fs7 beating the C300mk2 in that spec.
In regards to resolution
the C300mk2 does "full 4k" internal, albeit only up to 30fps.

Well... you did :)

What I'm saying is that 50/60fps is no longer "high frame rates" but normal frame rate (used for normal speed, not over cranking) so C300II is lacking here too.

Yes, I know that, was not referring to resolution but lacking 60fps in 4K means that you will have to reach for another camera (thus not "fully 4K"). It seems like overstatement but really 50/60fps and 4K is a current trend that will get even more popular this year. People will start to ask for BOTH.

And I'm not here to bash C300II because I really would like it to have 4K60fps. I still have some hopes (likely unrealistic) that Canon could implement it by firmware update.

ive only maybe once been asked to use 60p. isnt it the new 60i? same look but progressive? but everyone always HATED the 60i look..."soap opera", "news" etc. i guess maybe good for high speed content where the smooth motion is what you want? but for interviews/narrative/anything else...ewww.

60p is a universal format. Meaning you can acquire in 60p, get all of the benefits but edit on a 24p, 30p or 60p timeline. Shutter is a little different but in many cases this is not an issue. For drama or just interviews you might really want the slower shutter but for everything else 1/60th looks fine in 24p.

ah. so its more of a "i dont know what framerate we're finishing in so i'll be safe" vs "this is the look we're after?"

Yes, I wouldn't go 50/60fps there. But sports, documentary, live events and shows is where I started seeing it VERY frequently. I've just noticed that Jimmy Kimmel on youtube is in 60p. Well.. 720p but still.
