Hi,

i'm trying to figure out whether shooting raw to prores on a a recorder like the atomos or 7q will give me even a better image than internal?

I can't seem to find any examples out there, doesn't look like many people have shot raw apart from the initial Canon promo for the C300 MK II itself?

Has anybody here gone this route?

I'm interested in that as well, especially now when there is a compatibility issue with FCPX and the Canon C-log footage on the latest (1.0.6) C300 Mark II firmware.

The only example I've been able to find comparing C300 MK II internal vs raw, is this short clip - https://youtu.be/B8eiQrG-cYo -where there actually seems to be a noticeably difference.

It looks to me that RAW footage examples wouldn't be meaningful, since with RAW footage processing is mandatory, so the looks will depend mainly on the processing done in post, rather than the camera and/or the recorder.

The RAW----> ProRes is superior to the internal codec. I've compared the two side by side and there is more detail when recording externally. (RAW----->ProRes)

I rarely record this way though because the internal codec is already amazing. You have to be a "pixel-peeper" to appreciate it.

For double the bit rate (400Mbs/XF-AVC 800Mbs/ProRes) I don't find enough of a difference. Gotta remember, ProRes is MPEG-2 based codec and XF-AVC is MPEG-4; so efficiency is the name of the game.

I've done quite a bit of double system. (Well, triple system really since they often edit on the Proxies) 4K XF-AVC internal & Odyssey7Q ProRes External. Have also done 4K XF-AVC Internal & CanonRAW external on a few projects. The Canon RAW I normally hand off to some VFX department somewhere and I never really get to pixel peep much, but there's definitely more information since there's no compression.

Between the ProRes and XF-AVC I don't find the quality difference to be very significant. It's more about compatibility since 4K ProRes will play on a laptop, while 4K XF-AVC needs 8 core or 12 core MacPro to be able to press play and not drop frames (apparently). And editors never want to upgrade their hardware for my projects so they LOVE to get ProRes as they can edit directly on the 4K material on a much wider array of hardware/software. The file size increase is not fully 2x, more like between 1.6x and 1.8x'ish, I think. 422HQ vs XF-AVC in 4K. And BTW, ProRes is not MPEG-2 based compression, it's Apple's twist on DCT compression intra frame only.

The other thing is that the Samsung SSD media for the Odyssey7Q is 1/10th the cost per GB of CFast 2.0 cards. So if I have a shoot where it's complicated to offload and I need to shoot massive amount of 4K for multiple days straight there's a very significant cost savings for me to record with Odyssey7Q in ProRes. I also have a 'thing' against blowing money on dead end memory card standards like CFast!

Which specific drives do you used for your Odyssey7Q?

The internal codec on the C300mk ii is indeed excellent. I like the 7Q+ for recording in ProRes XQ, pretty great quality!

Samsung 850 EVO 1TB. Used to be around $300, even down to $280, but with current shortage of flash memory it's around $330.

I find that the bitrate for ProRes422HQ varies somewhat, while bitrate for XF-AVC 4K does not necessarily do the same. So it's not entirely constant 1.85x as large as XF-AVC, but that's a good start for estimating storage needs.

Yes, the cost of CFast cards is ludicrous, especially those on the "approved Canon list." We just bought two 256 Lexar cards to give us about 80 minutes of dual slot 4K recording on the C300 mkII. It cost over $1,300!

Doesn't help that similarly spec'ed XQD cards are half the price per GB!
Hopefully the new CFexpress standard that was announced last year will get more widespread use and better prices!
For the next camera!
