Hi ALL,

Quick question is anyone else experiencing banding on out of focus areas?

I have the noise reduction set to -1 on cinema gamut CLOG 2.. i still get this horrible banding on the footage.

Anyone to combat this?

Thanks

Thanks, I don't like the look of Canon Log 3 as much as 2. Purple horizontal stripes too.

I have done an ABB on both times hooting recently still bad. It is only in out of focus areas Shallow DOF.

Have any examples? -1 has removed all the weird banding I've experienced. Could it be a limitation of your monitor now?

What colorspace, resolution, and bit depth?

Canon Log 2 vs. 3: try shooting the exact same scene in both 2 and 3. Then in post apply LUTs to convert both to Wide DR using https://cameramanben.github.io/LUTCalc/. You should find they look identical (except for noise in Canon Log 2). I've done this test comparing Wide DR, Log, Log 3, Log 2 and they'll all look the same when correct LUTs are applied. I initially liked Canon Log 2 because I could use the builtin Alexa LUTs in PP CC, until I found I could get better results with custom settings and Canon Log 3 with no LUTs.

There is inherent CMOS smear in all these cameras; some control it better than others (and typically only shows up in rare occasions unless there's an issue with a particular camera's sensor).

Thank you for all of your replies.

Again, it is in the out of focus areas, Settings Canon log 2 and 3 - -1 noise reduction, Neutral and Cinema Gamut.

What do you all think.

With bit depth / codec are you using? There's also macroblock artifacts in the examples you posted (could be this forum's JPG compression).

The banding in your examples are quantization artifacts- loss of bit depth and/or compression removing too much noise (noise is needed as a form of dither). Are you using Premiere Pro CC? Did you try changing the sequence settings / Video Previews to Maximum Bit Depth? (noted from Chris Young's post)

What do the clips look like in Resolve (it's free)?
