My recently upgraded C300, a Canon 400mm f4 lens, and an international airshow provided the perfect situation to test how well the auto tracking focus works.
I had 6 stops of ND in, and a base ISO of 320. 1080p 23.98 with a shutter of 180º. My aperture was f5.6 and the gamma was wideDR.
I got the Dual pixel upgrade about 5 weeks ago and while I don't hang my hat on it that much, I will say the constant AF can be quite good. I was shooting with a 70-200 2.8 at 200mm following people who were walking down the street with their faces buried in their mobile phones while walking. So this was pretty random people walking towards camera on an angle, with the distance to subject changing rapidly. The constant AF nailed the focus virtually every time.
I have my 300 AF set up for 'push auto' which grabs a focus when the button is pushed. I do use this function frequently when shooting doc style as a reality check on focus in fluid doc type situations and it has made my life far easier. I like that you can set the AF function as push instantaneous, push hold or continuous. I've used continuous once and it was quite good. i've not had occasion to use push- hold, and use the push instantaneous most frequently.
When I bought the 300 I debated between the EF mount and PL mount and I have today I'm really happy that I went EF now that the dual pixel AF is a reality.
I got my C300 Dual Pixel upgrade yesterday. Didn't have time to shoot much with the AF. However, I checked inside my house and it works well. I can zoom in or zoom out and it retains the focus well. I tried with a 70-200 f2.8 II with 2xII TC and the zoom works well from 140mm to 400mm. Will do a thorough test with my various long lenses later. This is very good for a 3 axis gimbal so that you can operate alone and still get all your focus right.
