C200: c200 low budget commercial

For anyone's enjoyment/reference, here's a small project I shot/edited on the c200/CRL:

NOTES:
- Crew was me plus Gaffer.
- Lights used - 1800 HMI, 575 HMI, pair of luxli taikos.
- Moving forward, I'm going to buy a few 1/8 strength diffusion filters.

Great job! Very nice looking food shots

(Gotta love that Australian accent :))

Re:diffusion - for their skin? It looks good to me (on my phone). A filter that I like which is subtle enough to be used for literally anything is Tiffen Black Satin. But if you want a "look" it doesn't do much. I use it to soften skin a bit

Thanks Abe! Hah yes, he's got a good voice.

On my computer, the piece to camera has a slight cardboard cutout feel and seems like a slightly softer subject would help. I don't mind the rest though. Thanks for the TBS tip.

Sizzler was really big in the 90s/early 2000s in New York. All gone many years ago.

Which lenses? I like that spraying shot.

Nice work. It's always great to see the C200 in a commercial setting. What LUT did you use?

Thanks. LUT is Arri Alexa LogC to Rec709 (as is tradition) with contrast and saturation adjustments, plus some windows.

Yeah it's pretty capable and still has plenty of life left IMO.

I know, nothing like the 90s. There are only a handful left here.

Canon 70-200 2.8 ii for the host (there was a booth in between us). The rest was mostly Canon 24-70 2.8 ii and a few shots with the sigma 18-35.

Everything still has plenty of life left :). My FS7 and GH5 will be working for me for years. I still use my c300mk1 when HD is OK.

That's why I feel like once I go FF AF no-crop 4K60p 10-bit+...what will I need to upgrade for? A marginal improvement? People will have to start demanding 8K for me to do buy again...

Yes, I agree. I try to buy equipment that I'll use for a really long time. There's nothing wrong with the constant upgrades but it's not for me. I'll keep using the c200 as often as I can simply because I already own it.

I held off on an EOS R because I didn't like it enough to use for years to come (I still rented it a handful of times). Further tests pending, I plan on buying the R5 and will use it for as long as possible. C200 + R5 > C300 iii???

Same with lighting, I haven't bought any aputure products. Up until now they've been OK-good, but not 5 years + good. I'll likely make my bed with the 600ds and buy 2-4 of them then run them into the ground despite other options being continuously released.

That makes sense. Yeah if you aren't a hired gun (c300mk2/3 or fs7/fx9) and you can handle 1Gbps RAW the C200 is dope. I dont know how the AF compares to what's coming out now.

I agree - in practice I'd rather have c200/R5 than just a C300III (especially if I already had a c200). The C300III looks like a pretty great camera tho. Money aside that + r5 is a winning combo and probably what canon wants us to buy

It's not as good but still lets you take advantage of AF in many situations. In the video above, with no budget for an AC/lenses/wireless FF, I made sure the shotlist wasn't too ambitious in regards to shots that would use AF. It was most useful for the waiter walking towards camera as the slider tracks back. That shot would either have to be shot differently, scrapped or we'd need more takes to keep him in focus during the walk. I'm pretty happy with c200 tracking but I think the next round of AF will help massively with scenes where the talent is getting hit with a strong back light, still a huge overall improvement being that much more reliable.

Ideally I wouldn't own a single piece of equipment and could get a huge rate as a DP just showing up with my brain and the latest nikes but I'm not there yet.

I remember our local Sizzler (Adelaide suburbs) being shut down for salmonella and the building got ransacked, I was super jealous of whoever stole the soft serve machine. Cool to see it’s still running up your way!

Out of interest what was the budget you were working with? Through an agency or direct, were you director & DP or solely DP?

Stoked to see you’re keeping busy in the downturn, most of my clients are interstate so I think it’s safe to say they’ve found someone else, JobKeeper to the rescue! 🤷🏼

Good work Rob, I like your lighting and the shots.

Curious, was there any discussion of the talent (staff)
wearing masks on camera? Seems a bit of a contradictory marketing
message to "come back to Sizzler, we're open, clean and safe", yet it's indoor dining
with no masks on the servers? I know it's dictated by government policy though.

Here in Ca, where I think our second wave or "first wave plus" infection rate is still climbing,
no indoor dining anywhere and all servers and all customers are wearing masks, except when actually eating.

One of the universities around here just got a new president and they released promotional b-roll of her walking around campus to the local stations to run. She has a mask on in all of it. Are you kidding me? The general public’s first look at the president of this university and you can’t even see her face! Stupid, stupid, stupid! No people around her. Just her walking around an empty campus, alone.

I’ve talked to people and no one wants to see people on TV, especially in ads(essentially what this is) wearing masks. And I’m getting really tired of the reporters doing it or having them on their person in conspicuous places so they’re visible on camera, if they’re not wearing them. In the beginning, I got it, be conspicuous, but now, we ALL get it. I don’t need to see you looking like a clown during your LS with your mask hanging down from your ears or (no lie) clipped to your shirt like a mother may pin a little kids mittens to their jacket.

BTW: good jobs, Rob. Sorry for the sidebar rant.

Eating where? I imagine at home as there is no point in wearing the mask then.

It is done to set a good example. It doesn't matter what her risks are; it is visual reinforcement, especially for an uncertain future.

I was quite happy that dvxuser was one place where the anti mask rants didn't take place.
Wearing a mask does no harm at all but that it might save lives is reason enough to wear one.
I don't know why people get so aggressive about this.
What NorBro said. It's a good example.
What is really stupid stupid stupid is making wearing a mask a political theme.

and btw shoot some footage with masks now and shoot it again without if the pandemic is over.
What's the problem about this?

You 1,000,000% misinterpreted what I said. It was not an "anti-mask" rant. As a matter of fact, if you have run across most of my other posts on DVX when discussing masks, I've been asking why are so many people "anti-mask"(to the point of violence in some cases), when it's not that big of a deal to put one on. This was about presenting someone on camera and to the general public for the first time to see, but you could not see them(or hear them and there was nothing distinguishing about them that anyone would recognize at this point), because their face was covered up. This wasn't a public press conference with people present, in which case, I think it plays into the best light to at least walk out to the podium in a mask and then remove it to actually speak at the podium while you are distanced from people, as seems to be the case in the majority of the ones I've seen. But this was pre-recorded b-roll for the sole purpose of presenting them to the public. In my opinion, it was basically pointless, because no one knows who this person is, it was just b-roll of a faceless, unknown person walking around. What was the real point?

I meant eating at restaurants. We've been going out to eat occasionally and we wear the masks when the server comes to the table but other than that,
most people, at least here in SoCal, remove the mask when eating outdoors as it's too much of a PITA trying to take bites of food while lifting up a mask.

I am not sure how mask wearing has become such a political hot potato? Epidemiologists seem to think it's a good idea to mitigate the spread a little so I have
few problems with it. Even if it has little effect or is a placebo, it's not worth antagonizing scared people by not wearing it. Too many people are going BS crazy over
everything in 2020, why be a disruptor, just go with the flow.

But what about the circulating air in the restaurant?

You (anyone) wear the mask inside, and then you later take it off as if you've passed some sort of safety test when it's time to eat, and then you sit there with your mouth opening and closing for 20-30 minutes - with some breathing through the nose more than usual - while you eat inside of a public place with a bunch of other people in the same location.

The risk is probably low but this still reminds me of washing your hands and then touching a public faucet to turn off the water.

Yeah your guard is down and you're transmitting freely while you eat. I took my mask off to eat at my last shoot. Maybe I should have eaten outside. Didnt think about it. In theory it would be good to stay masked while eating. But in practice it seems challenging
