C200: C200 and Canon 17-55

i am curious to know if anyone is successfully using all 3rd party lenses with face tracking without a hitch? Please share your thoughts if it works on tokina, sigma, tamron or any other AF lenses...

Hello,

I've been using the 17-55 w/ c200 for a couple weeks now.
1-There is vignetting especially in raw 4k. Less in mp4 uhd. Up to 22-24mms. Does not bother me.
2-peripheral illm. Corrct. does take care of some darkened corners but image takes a slight hit.
3-af speed is grayed out and warns "can not be used with this lens" which is a shame.
4-af speed limit is grayed out also.
5-af response works.
6-face detection/object tracking work flawlessly.
7-in short dpaf is working ok with this lens except the speed adjustment.
7-I somehow remember that the af speed was working on the prototype c200 I tested a few months ago. I was quite happy it did.

I hope this helps, all the best.

I'm also using the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS with the C200. I agree with what Faith wrote except I am not seeing #3 and 4 and I will add that I am looking for a replacement lens. The C200 focus with face tracking and object tracking works fine but it is a relatively slow to find focus and the lens somehow seems noisy when focusing compared to the 18-135 STM IS, it sounds like a coffee grinder in comparison to the smooth, silent focusing on STM lenses. I love the range and F stop of this lens but I wish Canon would update it with STM/USM motors. It's just okay but not great on the C200. Unfortunately all of Canon's STM zooms are slow speed and many of us documentary shooters need the 2.8 so I will soldier on with it. For daylight exteriors, I have gone back to the 18-135 STM IS and while the zooms are unusable because of the focus/refocus lag (this lens temporarily goes out of focus, then snaps back in when you do any kind of zoom), the lens itself performs well as a variable prime and the images are decent, even in 4K. Which is funny because I ran tests with my 80D and 5D MKII shooting stills and the 18-135 STM IS is a terrible stills lens, it's really soft, especially in the corners but somehow, even at 4K video, the sharpness seems fine.

I've also been testing the Canon CN-E 18-80 T4.4 and the CN-E 70-200 T4.4 prototype and while I really like these lenses, they are realtively large and heavy, even though they aren't heavy for a servo zoom. But especially if you are cradling the C200, either lens makes the camera too front heavy, it is better as a shoulder mount or tripod mount lens. So overall, IMHO, there is no perfect solution to a working wide to mid-range zoom for the C200 documentary shooter at the moment. There are compromises with all three choices, the 17-55 2.8 IS, the 18-135 3.5-5.6 IS STM and the CN-E 18-80 T4.4, none is perfect. I love the 17-55 speed, size and weight but it is an ancient design and focusing is not great. 18-135 STM IS is too slow and the zoom focus thing bugs the hell out of me, CN-E 18-80 functions beautifully, but it's not cheap and it's relatively bulky and heavy if you are traveling or shooting the camera cradled. Makes me sound really picky but this range lens is your bread and butter, the lens you will use most of the time so it needs to be perfect.

17-55 is my main doc lens with my 300mk2. It does vignette a bit in 4k at 17mm.... DPAF is quick with this lens and maybe its just my lens, but the example I have isn't noisy. I have my camera set up for one touch auto focus which I use most of the time and I think the focus action is pretty quick compared to all the other canon lenses I have, both primes and zooms.

I agree that there isn't a perfect lens for base level doc work- I have tried the 18-80 which I like alot , but without a shoulder rig its too long and heavy to be of much use. My usual hand held shooting mode is minimalist camera, no shoulder rig, and then I use the rig for places where I'll need to shoot for long periods of time doc style with subjects that will be standing, wlaking nost of the time . If Canon remade the 17-55 into a 17-80, without the servos and other features , that would pretty much be the perfect hand held doc lens.

Agreed. Reworked 17-80 2.8 IS STM. Sell it for $1,500.00, the lines would go out the door to buy it. Servo is cool but for my own work, I don't need it. For clients, they seem to want power zooms. For me, not important.

Faster than the typical 4.5-5.6 on the zooms would be nice too! The 18-135 STM IS goes off of 3.5 pretty quickly when you zoom.
