C100: C100 Narrative anyone?

For those interested, here's the short film to the screengrabs I posted earlier. I didn't want to start my own thread, since I may soon be taking it down to tweak it a bit as well as submit it to some festivals. This was the version that I screened over the weekend to crew/friends etc so I'm still tweaking it. But since there's not a lot of narrative content on here made with the C100 I thought it's worth showing you guys. However, some notes before you watch it: First of all, this was a quick short we arranged to test the camera out. I wrote the script in a few days (I've never written a script before) and we shot it a couple of weeks later. When you watch the credits you'll see how big the crew was! Second, the budget was $1000 and that went to food and renting an RV to keep everyone cool (it's almost 100degrees here in the summer). Third, we shot this in two days so it's not perfect. Technically most of it is alright, but the opening scene was shot at the end of day two and was a mad rush to get through it. We had a lot of technical problems and we were losing light (Ninja batteries dying, only one lens (F4) etc.) so our intention was to always reshoot this scene. But, after bringing up the exposure in post I actually liked the grittiness to it. I also shot this entirely with natural light and cheap Rokinon lenses and the 24-105mm Canon L lens. Also the only time we used a reflector was in a couple of truck interior shots near the end. Everything you see was shot under natural conditions, no bounce, just using natural shade. Also there are a couple of shots in there that were shot using the internal codec. See if you can spot them :)

One last thing, I wrote, dp'd and directed this and (as another poster mentioned recently) it's not recommended. It's extremely stressful, but sometimes you just gotta get it done.

Enjoy!

(video removed for now)

Gear used:

C100 w/Ninja2
Rokinon 16/35/85mm lenses + Canon 24-105 L lens.
A beat up crappy zaza slider.
Mathews car rig.
I did bribe my friend who owns a Steadicam rig for the "tree" shots.
Can't tell you much about sound :)

Not bad at all, mrl72! I rarely finish watching "weekend shorts", but this one was solid and kept my attention. Congrats for getting it done on limited time and budget!

Much appreciated! I also hate "weekend shorts" or rather making them lol.

Same here, but this held me to the end. Well done. What you've achieved with the C100 and in the constraints you have outlined is admirable.

Thanks man. There are certainly some things I don't like, and would do differently if I had the money and time but it is what it is. I had sold my Scarlet a few months ago and picked up a used C100 so just wanted to go shoot something with it. This camera is wonderful to shoot with. I remember my AC calling me the night before and asking if he should bring his Arri kit and generator for the non-moving car internals and I was like heck no I'm shooting it all with available lighting, and he's like well everything outside will be blown out if we don't have proper fill. But I knew this camera could hold its own. Wide DR is simply amazing. I was even more amazed when l looked at shots that I thought had some highlights blown out in the monitor only to see so much detail still in them on the computer.

Coming from a RED, the workflow is so much simpler, and faster. For my Scarlet I had built a much beefier PC to handle the 4K RAW files, and even then it was a pain to edit with. I edited this on my old 2009 iMac. My daughter's been using that PC just to play minecraft on lol.

I forgot to mention, the shots where the car runs over the camera were shot on a 5D2, and you can clearly tell. While ok for that sort of shot, I am not sure I would want to use by 5D as a b-cam alongside the C100 at all going forward. The image on the C100 is just in a different league entirely.

Cheers.

For sure! I tried to use my old 550d (t2i) as a b cam and there was a night and day difference. I'm using the GH4 now and the 2 cameras are very close.

If anyone is interested, my short film "Blood, Dust & Banjos" is back online and featured on filmshortage.com this week. Check it out. Shot on C100 w/Ninja2 for under $1K and in two days.

liked the look. (Not very fond of the actors though ) but nice job.
What lens did you use ? Any particular treatment in color correction ?

Rokinon 16/35/85 and Canon 24-105 for the car mount shots. Ended up doing a simple grade in FilmConvert.

For $1,000 total budget, I'd say the actors were good!!!

haha thanks. $1000 budget, no-one got paid, no rehearsals, every shot was one take, everyone faked the accents, plus shot in Florida (there are no good actors in Florida (running joke down here)).
